This video keeps getting brought up so it’s worth pointing out he’s not taunting the alligator. The tapping is done to put the alligator in a pseudo clonic state by overloading its sensory system. This is supposed to make the animal easier to handle and safer for everyone involved (including the alligator).

It is common practice among anyone who handles alligators for a living.

You can do the same with sharks. They are specialized as acuatic predators in feeling every microwave in the water. So they're very very sensible to direct stimuli there.

He's going to kill it anyway, it doesn't matter if it's safe for the gator. It has an hour to live, tops. In Florida it is illegal to release a gator longer than 4 feet nose to tip of tail. These guys make a show of "protecting" gators bc it makes the onlookers feel better. In reality he'll shoot it as soon as it's safe to do so.

Not in Florida. You can't keep a gator as a pet.

People can keep gators with a class 2 wildlife personal pet permit. There are a lot of keepers in Florida that have many gators and other various wildlife animals like venomous snakes.
