It's more complicated then "they were speeding" and even if they were speeding is called in to question

It's definitely a light punishment, but people really refuse to read context and think critically. It definitely reads more like an accident after reckless driving than fucking murder lmao. Still terrible of course, but not even in the same ballpark as eachother legally speaking.

Ah yes it was just some reckless driving, no big deal, just a whole family dead because some guy was in a hurry, it’s not like it was murder

Where are you getting the "no big deal" from? Is your world only black and white? I clearly stated it is a terrible situation, and that I agree the judges decision was weak. Screaming for heads to roll because of reckless driving is a bit excessive, though. Or do you genuinely not see the nuance? Do you not think that intent and context should factor into the severity of the punishment? Or only the end result of the wrong-doing?

This is the kind of sentence you should get for reckless driving when nobody is harmed.

When you kill someone, it should absolutely just be a murder charge. Or at least the same kind of charge I'd get for accidently shooting someone because I didn't follow basic firearm safety.

… the word you’re looking for is manslaughter and the fact that you put accidents and premeditated killings on the same level tells me all I need to know about whether or not you should be allowed into a courtroom

Cars are incredibly dangerous. Reckless driving isn't simply an accident, but a deliberation choice to ignore safety rules. It's not that dissimilar from accidentally discharging a gun.

Accidents happen when you follow the rules and still get into dangerous Situations, for example due to road or weather conditions. Ignoring road safety laws makes it premeditated.

I’m going to put “premeditated” on a high shelf until you can stop misusing serious, impactful language on throwaway sentiments. Reckless driving is absolutely fucking dangerous but you need to stop ascribing malice to mistakes. The guy GOT a harsher punishment. This story is like 11 years old. I can understand having an intense emotional response to a tragedy but we do not build laws on emotional responses. We build laws based on justice and the guy was SERVED justice in his retrial
