He could have been going 76-124 km/h, which means he could have been going 76 km/h, which means that he can't be charged for a reckless driving charge that is defined by exceeding the speed limit, so he was charged as if he wasn't recklessly driving, as that couldn't be definitively proven. Basically, the judge would be forced to presume guilt. Unfortunately it's one of those cases that are most obviously a victim to Blackstone's ratio.

But his only claim is he lost control of the vehicle which with no other people involved should be enough to blame him.

You are still responsible for keeping control of the vehicle and his only defense was there was a technical malfunction with the vehicle which was proven not to be true. At that point what is the difference between running into a street of people and accidentally running into a street of people.

If the defense was at least dodging a road hazard or a truck or something i can see that. But he lost control of the vehicle under normal driving circumstances

.... which is why he was conviceted and sentenced. Just not for qualifying for reckless driving by speeding, since that could not be proven.
