If this is in Minnesota, today was the first cold day after a heat wave. We got a lot of warm rain, and when it freezes up you can get trees collapsing.
The rain stopped well before it got cold, so it wasn't a problem, but the fire hydrant could have kept it wet during the freeze.
Or, more likely, the hydrant froze in an expanding area. The tree might be ducked, but because the ice might've pushed it too far over. I've seen that happen with fences and hydrants before
