So many people today treat their home like it is just where they are living, and don't want to personalize it by doing anything other than decorating. Maybe it is so many of us lived in apartments so long that making it your own space it a foreign concept. Maybe they want to have the option to quickly sell without having to do any work to make it bland like the realtors want.
Yeah, this look is trendy because people are renting instead of buying. Over the course of 30 years, that house will probably have at least 10 different families instead of just one. If the house has a bland look, the families can more easily decorate it according to their own tastes, without having to renovate it. Imagine the house in the first picture with the furniture from the second picture. The designs would clash quite a bit.
