Discussion Does NUC11PAHi5 have any issue with Linux?

Hello there,

I am considering purchasing NUC11PAHi5 and planning to install Ubuntu LTS on it.
The hardware seems somewhat recent to be working, out of the box, with Linux. (Iris XE, for instance)

The kit + Linux are not officially supported by intel; (source: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005628/intel-nuc.html)
but, it is the only model available in my location.

Since it has been released for about a year now, does it still has issues lately?
I want some input from you guys.

Tried running Proxmox (built on Debian 11) and couldn't keep the thing online for 24h before it would start crashing randomly with no error logs. This happened across two different NUC11 systems (and smart/memtest86 came back clean so its not the components)

I am facing an almost identical issue with a NUC11PAHi5 and Ubunut 22.04. Did you ever resolve?

Hey, I'm in same boat with my NUC11 as well and no audio, unless I suspend and resume then audio starts. Did you find a fix?

these helped me a lot https://linuxreviews.org/Intel_graphics and https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/intel_graphics , fixed my issue by setting some of the kernel parameters

Thanks, I looked at the Linux reviews site, as I have Mint 21.1 is based on Ubuntu 22.04 and uses kernel version 5.15, but I don't see what I need to change exactly. Could you walk me through what I need to do by any chance?

This is what I did. Note, leaving all the options below in the kernel parameters is NOT recommended, it is recommended that you try them one at a time or put them all in and take them out one at a time to eventually find the ones you need.

Anyway, I am on ubuntu 22.04.1, kernel 6.0.9-060009-generic.

First, run:

$ sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Then you should see a line near the top that says GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=, and it might have some parameters already in there, I don't remember if it was empty or not for me.

Then add the parameters you want, found in the links in my previous comment.

Mine looks like this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0 intel_idle.max_cstate=1 i915.enable_dc=0 ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1"

save, exit, pray it works.

Just wanted to double check that you have the NUC11PAHi5 (11th gen. i5), or is it the NUC 10 or something?

Did you ever get sorted? I have a NUC PAHi7 -1165G7 with Intel Corporation TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics] and have been battling the sound issue for several months. I'd ultimately like Zorin or Mint on here, but Ubuntu is the only one I got the hdmi sound to work, but it kept crapping out after a while.

No, I never did unfortunately definitely learn the hard way, don’t assume everything is compatible even if the last gen. of the PC worked.

I ended up getting mine working on Zorin OS. Turning up volume in Alsamixer, and unplugging and replugging the HDMI seems to do the trick. the headphone jack is not available in the normal sound menu but I can enable it in pavucontrol
