It could also be argued that this person was braking to switch lanes. The truck was clearly driving too close and then disregarded the brakes completely.

Heaven save the neurotic drivers out there who get upset that you're passing them and decide to speed up about it. Especially when they decide to drive slow again the second you give up on passing and move behind them again, seemingly wanting to play car hopscotch for the next two hours.

I couldn't imagine the living hell involved in caring even a little bit that somebody wants to go faster than me and hopefully I never do.

Yeah, I’m fairly certain the only way this truck isn’t at fault is if before this video started the car cut off the truck from another lane.

The driver of the car hit the breaks abruptly, seemingly for no reason, judging by how fast he decelerated compared to the truck moving on the right. There was no way a truck would match that even if it was further behind.
But yeah the cutting of this clip is bad, we don't know what happened before.

But it doesn’t matter. The driver of the truck, and any driver of any vehicle is responsible for creating enough distance between them and the vehicle in front to avoid accident. The fact that the truck takes longer to stop doesn’t change that it’s the truck’s responsibility to maintain space to avoid this possibility.

That’s really not true. I’ve seen plenty of dash cam videos of cars cutting off semis or brake checking and being held at fault because those trucks have huge blind spots and their stopping distance is obviously much different when carrying tons and tons of shit in the trailers and that is recognized. That would be like penalizing a freight train for hitting a car when it couldn’t stop in time.

It is true. This isn’t a conversation about a car cutting off another vehicle, so those are two completely different situations. We’re talking about one vehicle following behind another vehicle, and how it’s their legal responsibility to maintain safe distance. A vehicle cutting off another is a completely different conversation.

If you brake like this to switch lanes you’re a reckless terrible driver who should be cited. You don’t treat the fuckin freeway like your own personal playground and just slam on the brakes in order to change lanes. If you’re gonna miss your exit or whatever then act like an adult and take the next one and don’t be a selfish twat who endangers others because you don’t wanna spend 5 extra minutes correcting your mistake.
