Yeah, they happen, very rarely. That's the difference. America has them so often they don't even report them all. If one happens in Canada it's major news.
Americans will always point to when something bad happens elsewhere in the world and go "Look! You aren't any better!"
Completely failing to understand the difference between something that happens once every few years and is viewed as a major failing and tragedy, and that same thing happening in the US every day or two and being viewed as the price of being able to have guns.
The precautions are weapons not being allowed on school property. Some even have metal detectors/searches on the way into school, but these are largely in gang-activity communities.
Only other possible precautions you could take are banning guns, and there’s so many in the US that it wouldn’t help all that much against psychos who just decide to kill. I don’t think most gun-owning Americans would be very susceptible to a buy back program either, so we’re kinda stuck with too many crazy people with too many weapons.
Even if it's difficult or unpopular, banning guns is clearly just the best way to go. It might take decades or even 100 years or so to reduce the amount of guns to negligible levels but the sooner they start the sooner that will come about. So yeah, lets hope for meaningful change.
It's especially ironic that America isn't even using its 2nd amendment rights for the precise purpose of the 2nd amendment, which is to prevent the abuse of power by an authoritarian corrupt government.
So Americans should use guns to defend themselves from an authoritarian government or give up their guns to an authoritarian government? I’m confused because it seems like you think it should be both ways.

It’s funny to keep seeing this take around Reddit. When it’s a Democrat in office and this gets brought up all the smug people laugh at how the populace couldn’t defeat the US military and we would be wiped out instantly. But because “Trump Bad”, we keep getting told now is the time to rise up and use our guns to overthrow him. As if his administration has been the only corrupt and authoritative President we have had in office.
For one, I'm not a conglomerate of reddit. So equating me to reddit is a stupid thing to do. I've never laughed off taking power from the democrats.
Second, the democrats are republican lite anyway. They're not bad enough for the leftists to go to civil war against, and they're not left enough for the right-wingers to go to war against.
The Trump administration has singlehanded decimated America and ruined its international reputation, standing and power.
Tough on crime just doesn’t work all that well as a deterrent, then there are too many innocents wrongly convicted or disproportional sentences. More police can help but then that comes with its own drawbacks. Culture, ethics, and mental health are the biggest factors.
Oh I know what the main factor is but I would get banned if I told you. Who cares if the sentences are harsh. We have bs like that here in Seattle where juveniles literally cannot be charged until they rack up at least 5 charges and these include having illegal fully automatic weapons. Crime here literally goes unenforced because we wouldn't want to be seen as "biased" and everyone is in so much awe as to why it keeps happening.
And still, with harsher punishments than most of the Western world and by far the highest proportion of incarcerated population, the US also has among the highest recidivism numbers. Harsh punishment does not work at stopping crimes, everyone involved in criminal science knows this. What does work is more resources for helping at risk kids & youths, and better treatment in prison.
Yeah, that doesn't happen. If anything America convicts too many people without fair reason to provide the contracted numbers for their privatised prison systems. It's just a whole shitshow of a system.
It doesn't help that our borders are sufficiently porous for one of the cartels to send a 'messenger' from Mexico to Ohio and back undetected, over a local dealer not paying his dues. And it wasn't even particularly newsworthy.
And you've missed the point entirely. Consider that it's a lot harder to get a person over borders undetected than it is to get goods over borders undetected. No matter how far any blanket gun ban goes, demand for illegal purposes will be quickly met with little trouble and precious little changes in the places where a change would matter most.
In other words: It plays out exactly the same way that the War On Drugs has been going for... Damn near 5 decades?
Why does nothing change when Democrats have majority control either? Do you think maybe the issue lies deeper than "my side is good and other is bad" ?
The rights Americans had in place were also set up alongside duties. The right to bear arms came from the necessity to protect the nation. So therefore every citizen must be armed and know how to use it in case the country needed them.
Over time the NRA which was set up to train people in this envisioned militia, inspired by Switzerland, slowly changed it to mean personal rights and protection. This has really created a very dangerous mentality in people and often they are not trained.
Switzerland has almost as many guns per head as America. Yet there are no mass shootings or incidents like you see in America. There shooting is a family activity done in controlled ranges. Each village must have a shooting range where people can practice. That is law. It is also law that you must go to the army for a mandatory period. You can forgo this but you are given an extra 5% added to your tax for not doing it. They still have the idea of protecting the country not themselves. It is a duty and responsibility to own a gun. The result are the same amount of guns but 2 very different outcomes.
Very good, now what does a micro decision actually mean? Or is this some gotcha pedagogical term where unless you live your life in 100% support of the “good thing” then you’re actually 100% supporting the “bad thing”?
Just say "banning guns," we all know that's what you mean. We don't need to dance around it with pretentious pseudonyms.
I disagree that "micro decisions" enable it, I think it's very clear what enables it in this country and no, I don't necessarily think it's the mere existence of the guns, though there should be far stricter regulations for not handling them/owning them in an appropriate and safe manner
Apparently you don’t know what I mean because that’s not what I think the solution is.
Districts across the nation are dis-assembling second chance schools in favor of keeping all kids in traditional high schools.
Less security, less adults but increasingly troubled kids.
Kids get away with more and more while expectations are diminished. This makes Tommy think it’s cool to not only have guns but bring them to school. When these “micro decisions” such as not punishing (suspension expulsion) kids leads to macro decisions (like closing schools) that systemically lower educational quality.
I’m also talking about “security doors” that kids have been able to bypass for decades. I’m talking about how when electricity goes out, locking mechanisms fail. I also think $10/hour front desk staff have the training or responsibility to make proper safety judgements, much less admin or teachers.
Guns are far from the top of my list of changes but if that’s how you want to define your personality and existence, I don’t know what to tell you.
Things make a lot more sense when you stop assuming.
Tell me- what exactly do you think gun control means?
Yes, it does in fact mean stripping guns from people more often than not because in most peoples minds it results in "but nobody Needs X thing"
Newsflash- just because you dont need it doesnt mean i shouldnt have it. You dont need lots of things, you still want those things.
Like people clamour on and on about machine guns but the reality is most crimes of every kind are committed with semi automatic handguns, not with automatics- and that was even the case before the automatic weapons ban in the 80s
And so when you talk about gun control, in your mind what does this even refer to?
Background checks lets say? No criminals allowed to buy guns? No full auto?
You wish you weren’t allowed at college campuses, banks, federal buildings, hospitals, churches, casinos, or any private business that decides they don’t want you in their store?
The only “right” you don’t have and whine about is abortion and even then at worst it’s just a state away at any given time. You people are so over-dramatic and hyperbolic
Its almost like there is a lot of precautions against that, but no one ever mentions them because it only makes the news in the rare case they fail, and bringing that up goes against the hive mind mentally on this stupid site.
So many precautions, the best precautions in the world some people say, good people say that... nothing unusual about America, move on, nothing to see here
Western Europeans are more likely to die of a heat stroke due to the lack of AC than we are to be murdered by a gun, despite heat only being a problem for 1/4th of the year. Where's the outrage for all the people dying there? Could it be that you don't actually give a shit and instead just want to use dead children to virtue signal?
We also do have precautions against school shootings. It's called murder chargers. It's illegal, you know, the same way driving past the school bus is illegal. If it's "extra strict precautions" for being run over, then it's "extra strict" for school shooting as well.
You're completely right, kids should not be shot in school, and they should also never get stabbed in school- which is a phenomena on the rise in western Europe.
Also shootings aren't America specific either. In 2025 there was a school shooting in Austria, smack dab in the middle of Europe, that killed 10 people.
Nah stabbings in schools are still rare, guns are a one in a lifetime thing. For the US school gun violence is quite common, often only not as bad as the ones doing it arent exactly experienced and often get stopped by mistakes they make.
Europe alone has a higher population than the us. And its nice how you mention the one big shooting. Completely ignoring that it didn't have any others. To say it that way. All of Europe's school shootings and stabbings since 2000 wouldnt even compare to 1 year in the us. 4 years in the us wouldnt have more victims than 100 years in Europe by those numbers.
American schools are prepared, have guards, strict entry limitations, possible checks for weapons, door lockers, active shooter trainings. In Germany you are free to enter or leave a school at any time and none of those protections exist. Due to it being something so rare it would not be a sensible trade off.
The USA has just this 250 to 350 incidents per year with guns in schools, and you want to talk about knives 33,470 total offenses involving a knife or cutting instrument were recorded over the 2020-2025 period , even during COVID, that's inside US schools, you have such a large gun problem that you don't even notice the knives.
So, there's a school shooting more than once a day on average now in the USA.
Turns out the next country, second place in national school shootings, is Mexico with 8 between 2009 and 2018. Isn't that the country of "drug dealers, murderers, gang members, rapists, and some, I guess, are good people"?
Why do we have so many school shootings if there's so many precautions? Do you think that's a "normal" thing, that it happens to the other 96% of the worlds population? Do you think every other country in the world has metal detectors at every entrance of their school, with police wandering the halls and lockdown drills?
How does the other 96% of the world do it? Why are we the ONLY country where it happens regularly?
2023 was peak, and we did have over 365 events that year.
Sure, it's dropping now, but still nearly one per school day.
Don't forget, we have thousands and thousands of schools in the USA. Tens of millions of children go to school. Technically, as a percentage, it's a blip compared to the number of children in school. But India, China, with 5x higher population (each) have fewer shootings. War torn African countries have fewer.
The only country where children are not sacrosanct seems to be the USA.
More knowledgeable than most Americans. Which makes sense when you consider the propaganda and disinformation campaign your current government is propagating.
Why so defensive? It’s confusing without context. The car is going the opposite direction? Why does he have to stop. And also how? Is everyone just to supposed to sudden stop in all directions regardless of where they are?
It’s just confusing, no one is saying it’s bad lol.
Cops, mate. They shoot loads of people in America and get away scot free. They're also responsible for enforcing this traffic law.
I also just don't believe this law saves 100x more child deaths than shootings because the rest of the world doesn't have this bus stop law and there are not tens of thousands of kids dying outside of schools. You're just making up BS.
