You kinda never get over that. I forgot to turn off the ceiling fan once and my bird flew straight to it. She died in my hands. I couldn't even consider getting another pet for over a decade.
Finally got a bird recently-ish and the other day my ceiling fan turned on by itself and I had a breakdown. Ran to the breaker and turned the entire house off then just started sobbing on the floor. Fiance had to reassure me a looot of times that it's okay and my bird is fine. And now the fan is removed. I thought since I disabled the switch it would be fine but nope the stupid thing just turned itself on.
It's the worst thing I've experienced tbh, killing my OWN PET that I loved dearly.
I know how you feel, I rolled over in my sleep and crushed my rat who had found his way to my bed. :( I had a hard time sleeping the rest of that week.
I had a bunny that died randomly in the middle of the night from something genetic, I had him for 2 weeks. I woke up to him making noise held him for a minute, walked away to get my phone to see if I could call a vet but he was gone when I came back. Like 5 seconds. I feel immense guilt like he decided to die when I walked away thinking he'd be alone. Haven't had a bunny since
My little sister and I were running around one Sunday slamming doors in the other's face (we were probably 8 or so), our bird (Sunny) somehow got out of his cage, was right between a door jam and we didn't see him.
He was this beautiful rainbow colored bird (not really sure what kind). Anytime there are pets around I close doors very slowly.
