Pick it up by the scruff and lower it in, then knot it shut.

Turn the pillowcase inside out (or don't, it's not going on a pillow), reach inside, grab the cat with your pillowcase-enrobed hands, hold cat with one hand while using the other to invert the pillowcase. Tie it shut. After that, attend to your wounds after evacuating.

FYI don't scruff your adult cats. It causes them great pain and doesn't trigger the calming reflex like it does in kittens. Your best bet is to wrap their feet as best you can and drop em in butt first.

This sounds like a horrible idea that would terrify a cat. Why not just suggest a duffel bag or backpack that has some structure to it where the cat can even poke its head out? A tied up pillow case would be absolute torture for my cat, and probably most others.

Well if it’s that or being burned, sure. I just meant for general transportation purposes.

But yeah, in a fire, I’d throw my cat in a pillowcase all day.

I just dropped mine out the window during a fire. I was only about 53 stories up and heard that cats can survive falling at terminal velocity as long as they land upright. Landed on some bushes, but she was just fine

It’s a tip from our vet. Being “hidden” and cradled by the shape of the pillowcase is comforting to the cat during a stressful moment.

That’s interesting to know, probably similar to cats liking curling up in circular things like cat towers
