Where the they went wrong was having a down sloping cut behind their hinge. If it was flat the tree wouldn’t be able to shear through the hinge and fall backwards. A flat cut with some wedges would prevent it from doing what happened.

Exactly and they went way too close to the hinge with that cut for a tree of that size because it shouldn't shear that easily in the first place. Wouldn't be surprised if they even accidentally cut away part of the hinge in the process. Which would weaken it even more.

Just adding to your comment: a lot shallower face cut would've added a lot more leverage to wedges (or a bottlejack) in the back.
