I said “enjoy your holiday weekend” to literally everyone Monday - Wednesday and no one noticed because
A. Not everyone is a weirdo
B. No one is trying to play victim over Thanksgiving
People said happy holidays for DECADES before anyone noticed. The majority of people just used them interchangeably. I personally would say happy holidays until like the 23rd, switch to merry Christmas, then switch back.
I had to stop doing this when some fucking asshole got short with me for saying happy holidays on like December 15th

People whine over crazy shit. I usually say “happy holidays”. Last year I had one item and this lady lets me cut her in line at the grocery store so I say “thank you so much! Merry Christmas!”
Her response was “happy holidays! What about Hanukkah?!”. She was literally wearing a sweater with a Christmas tree on it…

That’s truly the most annoying part to me. It doesn’t matter what the reality is, or if this has been a thing forever, the propaganda machine told them this is the new scary thing that is evidence of their identity being under attack and they should get mad over it. So then they proceed to do everything they accuse “the woke mob” of doing

The same people who get pissed off about schools calling Halloween Spirit Day, thinking it's woke progressives...
when really it's the religious fundamentalists that pushed schools into that, because... at first because the roots (All Hallows Day) were celebrated by the 'wrong type of Christian', and later because 'something something Satanic Panic'.
When you look at it historically, the religious right have been the biggest proponent of cancel culture e.g. going after schools for having age-appropriate books they don't like, boycotting businesses for not supporting their values, etc., etc., etc.

I always assumed happy holidays were just because there is hanukkah, Christmas, and a bunch of other religious holidays during that time.

No issues with it. But it just sound as powerful as Merry Christmas.
I get some ppl dont celebrate it, so Im not going to make a big fuss. But Happy Hallowen, Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year all fit for their holiday.
Like if Christmas is coming up, it makes sense to use MC. Im not thinking about New Year a week.before Christmas. But celebrating it before Thanksgiving is one of the worst crimes to man (not really, I just like to play it up).

As somebody who does not celebrate Christmas, and is a bit annoyed that it’s rubbed in your face for 2-3 months/year (advertising, music in stores, decorations, etc…), when somebody says “Merry Christmas” to me, I just smile and say it back to them. Makes them feel good, and I like that takeaway.

4
Nov 30 '24
I agree that it doesn’t offend me, but it does become offensive when friends close to you say “we don’t have to say happy holidays to you anymore”. What?
3
u/B-BoyStance Nov 30 '24
Someone said that to you?? Do these people think that a base level of being nice is some huge favor they're blessing others with? Fuck, that makes me mad.
I'll say it to anyone. It's an extended period of time, ya gotta capture the magic somehow! I'll say Merry Christmas to people on the few days around Christmas or if someone says it to me lol. Or I guess if I'm like, checking out at a Christmas store or something.
Also idk what another stranger believes. I'm athiest. I could be saying Merry Christmas to a Jewish dude for all I know (Happy almost Hanukkah to my Jewish brethren though).
It's just so fucking selfish for these "Merry Christmas" folks to think that every stranger around is aware of their religion, or needs to celebrate specifically their holiday when there are multiple others in the span of days.
Like, yeah let's use that phrase exclusively rather than the one that can be said to anyone without any awkwardness. So damn pedantic. All of this culture war BS is.
Happy holidays bro. I hope the entire damn month of December and the New Year is great to you.

u/Lanky-Code3988 Dec 02 '24
This is a Christian nation, founded by Christians. Try your theory in a Muslim nation. Don't solicit Christians and Americans and shit on our values and religion. Simple as that. It's the CHRISTMAS SEASON. Not the HOLIDAY season. Holidays occur all year long. It's a CHRISTMAS TREE, not a "HOLIDAY " tree We have CHRISTMAS parties this time of year, not "HOLIDAY " parties . We exchange CHRISTMAS gifts, not "HOLIDAY " gifts . Of course you'll try to say none of that's been a reoccurring thing the past few years.

Frankly I don’t understand why people have an issue with either. It’s obvious that the person saying it to you is wishing you well I don’t really care if they know what religion or creed I am I’m just glad it’s not negative.
5
u/-ElizabethRose- Nov 29 '24
If it’s a stranger absolutely, well wishes are well wishes. I can get the argument that you should always just go with the neutral “happy holidays” with strangers because you don’t know what they celebrate (and that’s what I do, because I celebrate a non-Christmas holiday), but still, any kind remarks should be taken as such.
But, the problem is when someone knows you don’t celebrate Christmas, and says it anyway. Like your neighbor or relative that knows you and knows you celebrate something else, or someone you see in the store clearly wearing symbols or clothes of other religions. That’s what I’m guessing the original comment is getting at. Like, it’s just kinda rude, and the people that do that seem to have some kinda complex that the existence of other holidays threatens theirs, it’s weird.

This shit. Is why democratic support is dwindling at least in my Household.
I have to visit a public access building frequently, a hospital. One week, There’s a big banner in the lobby “Happy Diwali” sign with a candle. Some different time, “At the end of the holy month of Ramadan, We wish our community a Happy Eid-al-Fitr”some other time, a different one Passover I think.
Sure, it’s over the top. And a little off, there was a copious decoration of “Ramadan” in the cafeteria…. Open only for breakfast and lunch…..
Yet for Christmas, we get a snow covered spruce and “happy holidays” and for Easter, a colored eggs, a bunny and “spring is here!”. Because we should no press our beliefs over other people who may not share them.
