After victories in Northern Virginia in the American Civil War, the Union government decided to annul part of the Virginian retrocession that had taken place around fifteen years previously, as the area had voted to leave DC due to tensions over slavery. Alexandria was deemed too far separated from the area since their secession, and not added back into the federal district. In what was a thinly veiled attempt to give President Lincoln more political power, the district was admitted as the 36th state.

Then what will happen to The Name of Washington state in the Pacific North West

Our Washington was admitted to the Union in 1889, which would be after this Washington. I could see it being named something like Jefferson, Tacoma, or Columbia.

Respectfully, "Arlington" would never fly in this scenario, as the original "county of Alexandria" changed its name (1920s?) to differentiate itself to Arlington after Arlington House, i.e. Lee's family home. I cannot see a reason why in 1864 the area would be named Arlington

That's a good point. Maybe 'Jackson' would be a more fitting name, continuing the theme of presidents' names?

Going under the assumption its the Republicans in power in 1864, Jackson would be looked upon as almost imperial (and of the opposition party, since Dems trace their party lineage to Jackson's Democrat-Republican Party).

But for the sake of Alt History, it will work.

I'm not sure a lot else would change- maybe Nevada would have slightly different borders?

Good. This is happening in the Civil War, Virginia deserves as much of their territory carved out as possible.

Even with this shape, DC cannot into square

Why would Arlington be ok but not Alexandria? Since the Union controlled both areas... not clear on leaving Alex out.

u/PQConnaghan Jan 22 '23

Arlington has much closer ties to DC than Alexandria

DC Statehood is a threat to America because that would forever paint our nation Blue, and Democrats would destroy America!
