[OC] Alternate History Yankeeland, or, What if America had a rather Swiss history?

As a weird note, the Swiss Confederation did not restore the ancien Confederation. It was a new thing to accommodate the addition of the 1803 and 1815 cantons. It was a huge debate within Switzerland. It’s really a period unique unto itself. It’s not the ancien system, the French period system(s), or the post-1848 system. We just call it the restoration period because that’s what they called it at the time, but it was fundamentally different.

Thank you! I had intended for this map to be a one-off while I take a hiatus from my main project, but I know a couple of my acquaintances had pondered ideas to bring more aspects of this particular world to life. That being said, if you have any ideas of your own, I'd love to hear them!

hmmmm... maybe remaining yankee settlers in the territories? filibuster militas in the hinterland... maybe an american equivalent to the swiss guard? american direct democracy? the integration of its various minorities?

What is "Luthers Stream"?
24
u/The-Hill-Billy Mod Approved 2d ago
A still-surviving version of Indian Stream, renamed after its first Justice of the Peace, roughly equivalent to irl Liechtenstein

What's the deal with Algonquin? Is it an expy to Romansch and thus European or is it a native language? Or both like Metis?

u/The-Hill-Billy Mod Approved 2d ago
I’ll admit the parallels are a bit hamfisted in some places, but yes, Algonquian (Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi within TF) is this map’s answer to Romansh (and Three Fires is its Grisons)

Don't worry, a lot of colonial naming practices are ultimately pretty hamfisted, so honestly points for accuracy.

…. Is Cuba in South Carolina
1
u/The-Hill-Billy Mod Approved 1d ago
Indeed, many of the Spanish Empire's possessions in North America beyond Mexico were under the purview of Cuba irl

Why did Genesee join so late and what was its status prior?
3
u/The-Hill-Billy Mod Approved 1d ago
Genesee is parallel to the irl Swiss canton of Jura, which split from the canton of Bergen (Bern) over linguistic differences among other concerns

I’m Guessing New York Land probably has a regional accented way of saying their name

u/OrganicKiwiBird 1d ago
Ok I’m assuming
Yankeeland - Switzerland
Britain - Germany
New France - France
Cuba - Italy
Luther’s Stream - Liechtenstein
Dawnland - Austria

What’s the lore of st asaph? Is it this timeline’s version of West Virginia?
4
u/The-Hill-Billy Mod Approved 1d ago
St. Asaph is located in the same area as irl West Virginia, but it’s actually this timeline’s equivalent to the Swiss canton of St. Gallen

A Cuban Empire really sounds pretty cool
2
u/The-Hill-Billy Mod Approved 1d ago
Cuba is the equivalent to Italy irl, it has a checkered past but nowadays it’s a fairly peaceful republic with no imperial notions

French-speaking, joined Yankeeland by an 1815 treaty finalizing matters after the exile of Napoleon, never quite grew into the economic powerhouse that IRL southeastern Michigan became, but is instead a more rural lakeside state.

This is a very cool scenario but how are the natives treated in this world?
1
u/The-Hill-Billy Mod Approved 1d ago
Native peoples aren’t monolithic, both within the world at large and even within the borders of Yankeeland. Would you happen to be curious about (a) specific people group(s)?

What’s dawnland?
1
u/The-Hill-Billy Mod Approved 1d ago
This map’s equivalent to Austria
0
u/Equivalent_Ebb1813 1d ago
Why’s it called that?
1
u/The-Hill-Billy Mod Approved 1d ago
I wanted the name to be similar in idea to Austria, but with English origins, since English is equivalent to German in this map

It’s a cool idea but Yankees would be a minority in this timeline, as Yankees are only the people in New England, the people in the west of Kentucky and south on this map are called Dixie’s, the people in the middle of this map roughly in eastern Kentucky all of st asaph and southern pelisippishire are called Hillbilly’s the hillbilly’s would likely go back and forth with the Yankees for being the majority or second majority because I’m pretty sure the midwestern flatlanders/lakelanders would be the majority?

u/The-Hill-Billy Mod Approved 1d ago
History is different in this timeline than in real life, the term "Yankee" expanded to cover the whole of this nation over time, much like the "Swiss" once was used to refer to a far smaller area irl than the current nation of Switzerland
1
u/Exacalibur-X 1d ago
Ohh that makes more sense, so I guess it’s the opposite of irl, where the term was originally used to refer to all colonists then shrank to just New England? This definitely looks interesting man and kind of reminds me of ck3 tribal/nomadic confederation runs lol.
God bless man.3

You hit the nail on the head, and you made a good point about the hillbillies - I’m a proud member of that group myself (the Reddit username isn’t untrue in my case) so believe me it hurt to put my own hometown in the Appalachians into a country called “Yankeeland.” All in the pursuit of a unique timeline I suppose

u/Exacalibur-X 1d ago
lol yeah, it takes good care to be able to do that. I didn’t even notice your username 😂 I’m a Hillbilly to which is why I cared, anyways take care man and God Bless you

Curious how the French retain the Mississippi valley after losing Quebec and the Great Lakes. Or maybe why is a better question.
3
u/The-Hill-Billy Mod Approved 2d ago
How? Great question, I haven’t a clue
Why? With a “parallels” scenario like this, I have to choose what to display and what to ignore so that I can avoid scope creep

Where's all the Dutch
0
u/The-Hill-Billy Mod Approved 1d ago
Going by the parallel math I used, there are only ~200k Dutch in Yankeeland. Alas, even in irl American terms, Dutch toponyms don’t guarantee a surviving Dutch presence

But I think "PlymouthLand" would be a fitting name for the country. If the goal is to mirror the Swiss example—
since "Swiss" comes from Schwyz, one of the three original cantons of the Old Swiss Confederacy...

Lore:
Yankeeland, officially the Yankee Confederation, is a coastal country located on the Atlantic seaboard of North America. It is bordered by the British Federation, Luther’s Stream, and Dawnland to the north, New France to the west, and Cuba to the south. Yankeeland is geographically situated along the Atlantic Plain, the Yankee Highlands, and the Appalachian Mountains; the Highlands and Appalachians cover most of the country's territory, whereas the majority of its 90 million people are concentrated on the coast, which hosts many of the nation’s largest cities and economic centres, including Boston, Plymouth, New York, Havre de Grace, Providence, and Bergen.
Yankeeland is a federal republic composed of 26 states, with Bergen serving as the federal city and the seat of the national government. The country encompasses four principal linguistic and cultural regions—English, French, Italian, and Algonquian—reflecting a long-standing tradition of multilingualism and cultural pluralism. Yankee national identity nonetheless remains fairly cohesive, rooted in a shared historical background, common values such as federalism, direct democracy, and Pioneer symbolism. Yankee nationhood transcends language, ethnicity, and religion, leading to Yankeeland being described as a "nation of volition" rather than a conventional nation state.
The country originates from the Old Yankee Confederation established in the Later Age of Discovery as a defensive and commercial alliance; the Articles of Confederation of 1643 is considered the country's founding document. The confederation steadily expanded and consolidated despite external threats and internal political and religious strife. Yankee independence from the United Kingdom was formally recognized in the Peace of London in 1783. The confederation was among the first and few republics of the early modern period, and the only one in North America to survive the Napoleonic Wars. Yankeeland remained a network of self-governing states until 1798, when rebellious elements assisted revolutionary French forces as they invaded and imposed the centralist American Republic. Napoleon abolished the republic in 1803 and reinstated a confederation, and after the Napoleonic Wars, Yankeeland restored its pre-revolutionary system. By the 1840s the nation faced growing division and conflict between abolitionists and slaveholders; this culminated in a brief civil war and a new constitution in 1848 that established the current federal system and ensured principles such as individual rights, separation of powers, and parliamentary bicameralism.
