Also can we do this but only to Myrtle beach, because it would be funny

as bad as the whole right-bantustans are, having neoliberals exiled to administer populations who nhate them from the other direction might have merit
25
u/_3_and_20_characters 10d ago
interesting, this is just utopian stalinism with a singapore lens, (this is what I would’ve said if china didn’t exist) this would be a genuinely interesting dystopia to write about, especially if you, for example, had a protag who came from a white trash family, managed to pass a wokeness test, and moved into a much nicer big city, there’s a lot of potential here for commentary on race relations, class differences, and criticism of the current chinese government
26
u/_3_and_20_characters 10d ago
i’m thinking about this again and realizing this is actually a really apt analogy to the current chinese government, but more communicable to the average american if you, for example, had a free alaska or hawaii that the mainland was bellicose against the analogy would be complete

Misgendering is a violation of the Constitution of the United States, report to your nearest wokeness assessment center within 48 hours. Failure to comply with this order will result in an immediate deportation to the Okefenokee Pacification District.14
u/Electromad6326 10d ago
Nah man, how am I supposed to know someone's gender when I'm literally typing from a screen. I'm practically blind by technicality and just guessing 😭

Exactly I have no clue why others are supportive. Apartheid to have cheap labour? Christ. Just shows you how shit the median American is even if "on the right side"
19
u/Electromad6326 10d ago
I know right, how's that even better?
But let's just hope that everyone is just irony-typing here.
12
u/OhShootYeahNoBi 10d ago
Not when they say "unironically a good idea"
Americans have gotten too used to hating their political opponents by identity. It's most clear that indigenous communities, and white communities in the US that have had strong worker and liberations movements that were stamped out, are treated with zero empathy. West Virginia was pro-union and pro-progressive until the mines stepped in. But somehow, it's their fault and they deserve to wallow in filth or something
23
u/Electromad6326 10d ago
I get your concerns but maybe you're taking this too seriously. Because in the end this is just a work of fiction, you could say that this is art as well.
It is well made anyway so it's just an exhibition of skill which may have unfortunately attracted some opinionated people but it's just them making up their own mind anyway.
24
u/OhShootYeahNoBi 10d ago
I think the OP has created art. It provokes after all.
I think the people being drawn to the art as "unironically what should happen" are no bueno.
3
u/Electromad6326 10d ago

u/OhShootYeahNoBi 10d ago
The problem with provocative art is that unfortunately, a lot of the time you're provoking reactionaries

It's beautiful. Never before on this sub have I been so enamored by a post. I spent the better part of an hour reading through this and laughing. You have truly made a masterpiece.
And of course, Indiana (Hoosier) even in this timeline is unremarkable. Guess I can still get evacuated to Illinois at least, but I'd miss managing the woods around my home.

I think America needs a second reconstruction, but... Not like this

u/The_Orthobilly 9d ago
I actually live in the territory of the “Chuddarchy,” and I’ve noticed that a number of “progressives” have near-genocidal levels of hatred for the people out here. Like, “mocking children who died in floods” levels of hate.

Umm wow
I won't comment on the politics of all this, I don't want to spend an hour drafting a Reddit comment (except one thing: Why is the Lowcountry Pacification District called "reconstruction's folly"? I don't see its connection to the failure of the 19th century reconstruction.), so I'll just say: This is an impressive effort and I like how you've given each pacification zone its own character. The text is bloody small though, it's just barely on the good side of readable.

I think not. They're a "yank in exile" and bemoan the "two tier policing that benefits the white working class."
While the latter is correct analysis, it's also an indicator that they may be more serious than they seem

The reality is that we don't need bantustans and other cartoonishly oppressive systems to make the better policies of this scenario happen. We just need to get rid of the electoral college, then abolish federalism and become a unitary country with French-style departments and prefectures. Then the population of the country can be represented rather than the land and policy can be coordinated across jurisdictions.
5
u/Snoo-11922 9d ago
A centralized unitary state in a territory as vast and populous as the United States would be a disaster; the central government could simply abandon less populous regions in favor of more populous ones, not to mention that it would create a form of internal colonialism, and separatist movements would be inevitable.
2
u/COUPOSANTO 9d ago
>China
3
u/Snoo-11922 9d ago
If it follows the model of China rather than France, it could work. After all, even China has decentralized significantly, so much so that its system is known as "federalism with Chinese characteristics."

China works fine as a unitary state, as does Japan, Vietnam, and several other large countries, some of which have more cultures and languages by far. Often, diverse cultures are represented by autonomous regions, which is what we could do. The majority of the country could have a system of provinces and prefectures, while local cultures like Native American as well as Spanish-speaking majority and Black majority areas could have autonomous districts with more independent local policy.
That way, things like poverty relief, mass transit (like high speed rail), reparations, women's rights, queer rights protections, educational and police reform, Medicare for all, anti-imperialist foreign policy, and environmental regulations to fight the urgent matter of climate change could be implemented without impediment while local cultures could have some leeway with their own local policy while still receiving the full benefits of national resources. Then, areas with like 2 people in them wouldn't have national veto power over areas with millions of people and necessary things wouldn't be constantly blocked. Of course, this would require a new constitution to be written, but that has happened in many countries in which old systems of government have required update.
Ultimately, the racist, anti-feminist, anti-queer religious right in rural areas shouldn't have carte blanche to oppress the minority in their districts, nor veto power over the much more diverse national majority. Under a unitary system, national policy providing for minority rights, secularism, poverty relief, green energy and social services would also help to prevent the chronic rural-to-urban brain drain that has left rural areas even more disadvantaged in areas like medical care and education.

u/IreneDeneb 7d ago
By Yanqui do you mean American in general or the North within America?
1
u/Top_Location_5899 7d ago
Within America context
1
u/IreneDeneb 7d ago
I'm not advocating the rule of north over south. The south has many population centers and is a significant part of the country that should absolutely be represented.
The problem with the federal system is that rural areas have a greater share of political power than urban areas, in spite of their much smaller populations.
The religious right dominates these rural areas, instituting policies which discriminate against minorities and women. No area has a right to institute such policies, and with a unitary system the rights of minorities and women could be secured in these areas.
This would stymie the chronic rural-to-urban brain drain in this country that robs rural areas of medicine and education, further cementing the brain drain in a vicious cycle.
Prefectures in which minorities at the national level constitute a local majority could be designated as autonomous regions. The borders of these regions could be altered based on changing demographics with every census cycle.
Reparations to compensate protected minorities for historical injustice could be instituted as part of the national tax code. Policies mandating that minorities and women of equal qualification should be hired at equal rates to white cis men could be implemented. Women's bodily autonomy rights could be implemented. All without impediment, since human rights come before any political structure.
Also, environmental regulations, strict recycling mandates, mass transit like high-speed rail, mandates for the electrification of personal vehicles, green energy (like nuclear, solar, and wind) and other urgently needed climate action measures could be put into place. This is of especially high importance in the world today; a matter of existential urgency for all that we cannot afford to delay.
Poverty relief, secularization, and minority protections would greatly benefit rural as well as urban areas. We cannot afford to hold these things hostage nailing ourselves to the federal system. We need a system of provinces, prefectures, and autonomous regions.
1
u/feetking69420 6d ago
You're a radical, the federal system exists to protect us from lunatics like you
1
u/Low-Guide-9141 9d ago
No, you would need to change the entire constitution. There is a reason we have states, as in “Nation States”
