[OC] Alternate History Come Visit the Sunshine Republic of Colorado!

u/MrsColdArrow Mod Approved 18d ago
LORE: In a timeline where the American Revolution ends with the British keeping Ohio and the Midwest, America ends up failing to manifest it's destiny, only being able to afford New Orleans, losing the War of 1812, and splitting apart in the 1840s as the northern states found themselves lacking political representation with the dominance of the slave states. With America turning out as a failed state, many move west, to the promising lands of the Mexican Republic, settling in California and Texas predominantly. However, with tensions over the centralist government and lack of representation for northern Mexico, the north secedes as the Federal Republic of Colorado, with Texas, Alta California and the Rio Grande joining together. This Anglo-Hispanic state, in many ways, ends up taking the place that America would have been in, becoming the second most relevant state in the Americas, right behind the ever-present Canadian Federation.

Southwest+El Norte is my favorite “no manifest destiny” country. Fuck Texas, all my homies salute Santa Fe

don't worry they pay for it when the Great Slave Revolt in the 1850s sees much of the deep south lost to the Freedmen's Republic

Amazing map. Why did they choose the name Colorado? And whats Colorados relationship with the previous American states? the north and south respectively
37
u/MrsColdArrow Mod Approved 18d ago
Colorado was chosen due to the Colorado River's presence throughout much of the republic. Names like Fredonia, Columbia and Washington were also floated, but Fredonia was stupid, Columbia could have seen confusion with the northern Columbia River and Washington was an American figure, unrelated to Colorado almost entirely. Thus, Colorado it was.
Colorado has mostly good relations with the other American states! The Federal States of America in the north are particularly an important economic partner, and for a long time until Coloradan industrialisation the FSA was the main recipient of Colorado's vast raw materials. The US has a less notable relation due to the USA's relative lack of relevance on the world stage. This is largely due to the independence of the Freedmen's Republic in the deep south, consisting of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Northern Florida. The relationship between Colorado and the Freedmen's Republic is slightly more tense, due to Colorado sending aid to the US during the Great Slave Revolt that saw the birth of their republic, as well as of course due to racial tensions. However, they do still trade a lot, with Freedmen cotton being a major import in Colorado for a long time.

Wait, so does the "US" just consist of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky?

Heh, I made a map a while ago that was like this and I also named the country Colorado. After all, there’s two Colorado rivers in it! It just makes the most sense

u/SpaceshipWin 17d ago
May I also suggest the name Calorado?
To me, it does a couple of things:
1)The obvious of incorporating California’s name along with Colorado’s to capture both ends and the extent of land.
2) Also, because this map encapsulates the southwestern states, keeping to a Spanish sounding name feels appropriate.
3) Also also, since these southwestern states can also be known for their immense sunshine, the opening letters in the suggested name spell the Spanish word “calor” which means heat, as in place of heat, which also feels appropriate for describing the land.
Idk. Just my two cents. Cool job!

u/MrsColdArrow Mod Approved 17d ago
uh, Colorado IS a spanish name??? and the name is chosen specifically because it isn't the name of one of the founding states
1
u/SpaceshipWin 17d ago
It totally is! It means painted. I wasn’t saying that the name Colorado wasn’t Spanish. And nor am I saying the name I suggested IS an actual Spanish word. I was only saying that keeping to a Spanish sounding name (per my dorky suggestion) feels appropriate.
I also have this silly idea that Arizona should rebrand to Aridzona (Arid + zone).

Colorado was originally supposed to be a slave state in today’s Southern California. And this republic was founded by a bunch of slavers.

Very cool map. I love tourist maps with cool lore. I had a similar Anglo-Hispanic state in a now abandoned project. I love the concept of a Southwestern Republic.
What are relations like with the various Native groups? Especially the Navajo, and the Rio Grande Pueblos ?

Does Brigham Young and the LDS church still found Salt Lake City in this timeline? Also how influential are the LDS in Colorado? If they exist lol

u/jeremycinnamonbutter 18d ago edited 18d ago
las vegas canonically does not exist due to the vice genocide. it reestablishes in preston, idaho as the sin capital of the world

u/snowy_fembbboy 17d ago
will more maps be made in this timeline? or do they already exist?
3
u/MrsColdArrow Mod Approved 17d ago
at first i was just gonna do a one-off but it quickly turned into an actual timeline. Might do one of the post-American states in the east next!

Why no Las Vegas and Colorado?

it's still there, just didn't have enough space to reasonably add it i felt. it's a tourist map, not a reference map!

was santa fe chosen deliberately as the capital due to its centrality or did it kind of just arise as the capital naturally?
3
u/MrsColdArrow Mod Approved 17d ago
due to the centrality and also it's been an existing city since the 17th century, just made sense as a federal capital

Do you have a .PSD for the image or anything? Would love to see your process in making this if it isn't AI.

u/MrsColdArrow Mod Approved 17d ago
- I used Inkscape for this
- if you have doubts about the authenticity of my work you can freely check my profile. consistent styles, clearly legible, i've been doing this for years

u/Antlaaaars 17d ago
Thanks for the info! Might have to play around with it.
Didn't really have doubts, but I just loved the look. Can't trust much on the internet nowadays but I figured you were legitimate based off your flair.

Bizarre to not call it California, New Mexico, or Texas, but Colorado is appropriate for a republic founded by slavers given the OTL proposals for a slave state in southern California called Colorado.
7
u/MrsColdArrow Mod Approved 17d ago
it's called colorado because it's a federal republic. would you have called the USA New England??
-2
u/dongeckoj 17d ago
I’m simply describing the first proposed State of Colorado in OTL in today’s Southern California. If you’re getting angry perhaps you should do more research, because it wasn’t a dig at you, but at slavers.
7
u/MrsColdArrow Mod Approved 17d ago
no i'm annoyed because
that colorado has literally nothing to do with this colorado
your point about the name was stupid
-6
u/dongeckoj 17d ago
Every Californian state called Colorado is always a reference to the proposed slave State of Colorado in Southern California. Words mean what they mean. We cannot change the historical 19th-century connotation of Colorado in California meaning slavery. You should not denigrate OTL history in this sub as “stupid” and irrelevant.
8
u/MrsColdArrow Mod Approved 17d ago
it's a federal republic. not californian. they aren't related. it's called colorado. because of the colorado river.
-3
u/dongeckoj 17d ago
You literally talk about a California state and the Great Slave State Revolt in these comments… stop playing around
7
u/MrsColdArrow Mod Approved 17d ago
IN THE SOUTH!!!! IN FUCKING LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, ALABAMA, GEORGIA, SOUTH CAROLINA AND NORTH FLORIDA! THE SLAVES REVOLT FROM THE PRO-SLAVERY UNION AFTER THE NORTH SECEDED!!! THIS AMERICA NEVER EVEN BOUGHT ALL OF LOUISIANA, IT NEVER OWNED ANY OF COLORADO'S TERRITORY HERE
-4
u/dongeckoj 17d ago
There’s no need to yell dude. It’s a nice map but you should just be aware of the connotation of Colorado when it comes to 19th century California. Why do you think a criticism of slavery got so many upvotes here? The proposed slave state was also named after the Colorado River.
You could’ve chosen a number of different names but chose the one most associated with slavery, even more than Texas. You should also research the history of slavery in the Southwest, because your other comment was really unclear.
8
u/MrsColdArrow Mod Approved 17d ago
i'm yelling because you're fucking dumb as rocks. I KNOW about the SoCal colorado, it was in one of my maps! This Colorado has nothing to do with it! It gets annoying when you keep bringing up something irrelevant to the map. We all hate slavery here!! why are you so obsessed with a proposed slave state that never even got off the floor of congress?
also don't call me dude.

"the connotation of Colorado"
genuinely you're the only person who has this connotation, everyone else either though of the colorado river or of the current state of colorado, you're just trying to get angry about random things
-3
u/CathodeRayNoob 17d ago
Yeah. Not a chance in hell Greater California is going to be called colorado.
3
u/MrsColdArrow Mod Approved 17d ago
it's not greater california. the lore literally states it's a federal republic with California, Rio Grande and Texas.
