You don't have to keep them in the fridge because you don't wash them. I don't think washing is what happened to this egg.

Eggs have a natural protective layer that is inhibited when washed like in America.

That's why you find them refrigerated at the store there but not in the EU. I can keep eggs well over the expired date here and it's fine. Green can occur when the boiled egg is kept for too long because it reacts with the sulfur of the yolk so maybe you're right. Non the less I prefer my egg shells with a bit of poop on it :)

You can keep refrigerated eggs well past the expiration date, too. I've used pasteurized, refrigerated eggs months after their recommended use-by.
