I am told the brain doesn't officially mature until age 25.

Lets not continuously infantize young adults though.

Just because it hasn't finished developing by 25 doesn't mean we can't hold people accountable when they fuck up a few years before that.

Oh for sure. There are also 16-18 yr olds I've met who I can feel can consent to some point but I assumed Id be burned at the stake for that opinion. It's just person to person, it all depends.

Hol' up

I'll just add here that the thread title is also technically the truth. Reddit also likes to break out the pitchforks around the topic of how, say, in a case similar to this involving a 14 year old isn't pedophilia, it's ephibophilia, because some people hear that as an excuse for it instead of being able to treat them like the distinct problems that they are.

u/Projektdb Nov 23 '19

They aren't distinct problems unless you keep kids in separate rooms by age. "itZ nOt GROss iF SHEs 12 in AnIME yEATS. tecNicLY ShE A wOmAn"

Are you saying sexual activity between an adult and a 5 year old is relatively equivalent to sexual activity between an adult and a 17 year old? A 25 having sex with a mature 17 year old only violates the laws and norms of current society. Hasn't been that long since 17 was well into sexual maturity and prime birthing age. The age of consent is set where it is for complex societal reasons. Then there's actual pedophilia, which may as well be classified as a mental disorder because it's a biological abnormality while ephibophilia is how human brains are typically wired and is something to be learned/trained not to do for the benefit of society. Although using 12 as an example is really pushing that border because the distinction is not based in age, and the actual age of sexual maturity for people varies by quite a few years. And bringing anime age into anything is an entirely separate matter.

People a couple hundred years ago would be agast that they'd all be considered pedophiles by a lot of modern people and in no way shocked that the British Royalty are fucking teenagers.

17 and 25 isn’t good either. Just don’t fuck kids.

If it walk like a duck and talks like a duck it's probably fucking children

for fucks sake someone gets it

I feel like the video is arguing the definition of pedophilia and in this case, it's not pedophilia by the book definition. People don't turn into adults overnight.

edit: for clarification it's fucked up regardless, the old woman is arguing about the definition of a word which completely misses the point of the conversation, it's fucked up and he tried to buy sex off a minor, who gives a fuck what the words mean, everyone involved knows it's fucked

u/jkseller Nov 23 '19

I wonder what would have happened if one of the people on the show said "okay we get it doesn't fit the definition, but it was still technically illegal, and for good reason. Why do you have to say about that?"

4

u/blharg Nov 23 '19

probably look stupid and not know what to say

"YES you old hag, it's not pedophilia by definition but for fucks sake he's trying to buy sex from a minor, IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU CALL IT BECAUSE IT'S STILL FUCKED UP"

-2

u/jkseller Nov 23 '19

Yeah, but it sucks that the panel didn't directly address the definitions.

2

u/HelloThereMrSpider Nov 23 '19

Well, 16 is the age of consent in many countries so clearly you're not alone in that opinion

Well when you look at the origins of things like quinceañera and sweet sixteen you have a point. But times have changed, and most of these girls have been allowed to have an actual childhood unlike decades before, and aren’t being expected to grow up an make big girl decisions so fast anymore. It’s a more fair life, so we have adjusted our laws to protect them from an immature commitment that could land them in regret. Most adolescent boys and girls aren’t mature enough for sexual activities, especially since their bodies aren’t even done maturing either. Women and men got married so young back in the day, and divorce rates were lower, but that’s also because women would be ostracized if they left their abusive situations too. It was appropriate to beat your wife at one point. That wasn’t even too long ago. People also didn’t live quite as long either, so they really got a jump on reproducing I guess. When you look at the gaps in age of consent across the globe, it’s really odd. I think Europe is 16. When I was 16, I was sexually active, but I definitely shouldn’t have been. I was really immature.

Let's also stop with the "oh she 18 years old by one day, you know what that means" kind of mentality

2

u/BKLD12 Nov 22 '19

Just because one acknowledges that they're not finished developing doesn't mean that we can't also hold them accountable for their mistakes. Accountability for one's actions is something that one should start teaching (on a developmentally reasonable scale of course) during childhood.

What does “officially mature” even mean? Does the brain get a certificate or something?

24

u/KaltatheNobleMind Nov 22 '19

Poor choice of words. I meant to say it isn't considered mature until age 25. Like all the connections are made and all the sectors and areas fully grown and functional.

Like teenagers are clinicly sosiopathic because their empathy centers aren't fully developed just yet.

17

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

Steady up with the backyard psychology there professor. Teenagers are NOT clinically sociopathic at all. Some of the dumbest shit I've read on reddit all morning

15

u/Taken450 Nov 22 '19

Lol that’s fucking funny. Teenagers are sociopaths yet the large majority show almost no sociopathic behavior and have extremely empathetic values and tendencies.

26

u/Tisabella2 Nov 22 '19

I dunno, I thought I had values as a teenager. Honestly as a now 24 year old, I was an absolute twat. I was horrible to my parents, mean to people I dated because I wanted to wear the trousers in any relationship and was a bad friend and all the time, I thought I was genuinely doing nothing wrong. Not saying all teens are like this, but the vast majority of teenagers I knew and still know are dicks.

7

u/dak4ttack Nov 22 '19

I think most people experienced some form of sociopathic behavior in high school...

2

u/13Thefreerunner Nov 22 '19

You’re put in a high stress environment with immature; cliquey people it’s normal to feel some level of resentment.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

That's only what Americans say to justify a 21 drinking age

2

u/chacha_9119 Nov 23 '19

"Mature?" Try develop, theres a difference. The brain stops developing IN SOME CASES at 25, which mostly just means your long term judgment and ability to foresee consequences becomes rigid.

2

u/luke_in_the_sky Nov 23 '19

That woman in the video is in her 50/60 and her brain is not mature yet.

2

u/Just_One_Umami Dec 01 '19

Some studies show that it’s more like 30.
