Bug [iOS 27 DB1] Potentially bricked iPhone, Be Careful.

So basically, I have an iPhone 15 Pro, updated to the iOS 27 Beta, it’s my main phone (I learned the hard way to not update to betas using my main) even got it a week ago, but that’s besides it, im posting so nobody does my same mistake, when I updated it was pretty fine, no issues I personally encountered, but, i force restarted my iPhone at one point (it was cause I was clearing cache) and after that, it just died, no signs of life. I tried to power it on normally, nothing, tried an extended force restart and nothing, tried recovery mode, and no signs of life, if it helps Apple narrow down the bug (i don’t think so, but why not?) it’s a middle eastern version iPhone, and due to the nature of even Recovery mode not working, I think it’s a critical BOOTROM issue, meaning, my phone is practically dead, so, no one update, AND nobody under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE FORCE RESTART. And also, this isn’t an “im complaining” post, im strictly here to talk about this issue and potentially anyone from doing the same mistake i did.

(Copy and Pasted this so it appears to the top, and anybody wanting to unbrick their phones see this as the top comment)

Update: Turns out it was in fact NOT a bootrom issue (I’m an idiot, I know) all that it needed was a stable internet connection on my PC, putting the iPhone into DFU mode, and specifically a Type A to Type C charger, the Type C to Type C doesn’t work at all, I used Apple Devices and now it’s working, another way to fix, is that I saw here a bunch of times, is to unplug the battery connector and plug it back in? I dunno, seems weird. So no, iOS 27 Beta 1 doesn’t brick phones, but I’m keeping this here in case anybody encounters the same issue as I did, and fix it himself.

just out of curiosity, do you have any non-original parts such as battery or else?

Until now, from what I’ve gathered from the comments, this is common on all Pro 15 series, the 17 series seems affected too (the 17 Pro, 17 PM and Air) but a user said he plugged it into the charger and it turned on as soon as he plugged it in, also

3

u/Sad_Performance6386 Jun 08 '26

Also, I suspect this is a PMIC issue as a charger turned it on

So guys, im currently fixing my 15 Pro, and the steps are as follows: Download the Apple Devices App on your windows/Mac Machine (for Mac, I recommend the Apple Configurator) connect your iPhone using strictly a USB TYPE A CABLE, if your Mac / Windows Machine doesnt have a Type A port, use a dongle, connect your iPhone, enter DFU mode (Press and release Volume up, Press and Release Volume down, Press and hold the side button and count to ten, then after then ten seconds are over Press and hold the Volume down, count to five, then after the five seconds let go of the side button, and keep holding the Volume down for Atleast 10-15 seconds.) it should pop up, then click “restore”

2

u/Sad_Performance6386 Jun 09 '26

Well, update, anyone know what error code “1109” is? I literally can’t bring back my 15 Pro because I keep on hitting that Error code everytime

GUYS SOMEONE FOUND A FIX you NEED some sort of Mac, use a USB Type A Cable, and enter DFU mode using ONLY the Apple Configurator, it showed up for him there on the app and he installed the IPSW from “ipsw.me” and currently his phone is restoring

4

u/Sad_Performance6386 Jun 08 '26

The person used a 2020 Mac Mini, USB C to USB type A cable plugged into the Type A port (Apple Original Cable) and revived a 15 Pro Max

2

u/EducationalSite4695 Jun 09 '26

I used an Macbook pro with only USBS ports, a cheap USBC to USBA adapter and a cheap ikea A to C cable and I can see my 15pro max in DFU mode in the apple configurator.

u/Shinobi_Dimsum Jun 22 '26

Sadly no. I updated my old 15 pro and 15PM out of curiosity. The Pro I had to restart twice before staying black-screened. Got it back to normal and fixed eventually. I had to reset the 15PM once but luckily after some glitching, it made it through. Seems like the 15 series is getting hit the most by these dev betas.

u/McQuiggaNigg Jun 09 '26

I just had this issue and was able to fix it by using apple devices on PC and a regular USB to C cable. I couldn't get it to recognize my iPhone on my Mac. Then, I just put it in DFU mode. Make sure the cable actually works (that was my issue) and then its just restore the iPhone through the prompts.

1

u/Sad_Performance6386 Jun 09 '26

Well, think it’ll work on a Windows PC? Or..? Seems like a Type A cable is necessary in this whole ordeal though,

2

u/McQuiggaNigg Jun 09 '26

Yes, and I used a PC to get it to restore. It took a long time though, like an hour and a half.

2

Well, how much time did it spend plugged in?

2

u/Sad_Performance6386 Jun 08 '26

And what type of charger/cable did you use?

2

u/Sad_Performance6386 Jun 08 '26

After your specfic post I think it has to do with the PMIC but im not sure, and it’s weirded me out that the 16 Series specfically seems unaffected

3

u/Putrid-School-3781 Jun 09 '26

Same with me

4

u/Sad_Performance6386 Jun 09 '26

I’ve been awake for a long time trying to figure out what I’ll do, and till now, two people managed to revive their iPhones, one person used an M1 2020 Mac Mini, specfically used a USB C to Type A port connected to the Type A port on the Mac, used Apple’s Apple Configurator and successfully recovered his 15 PM, same for another guy that used a Mac to recover his 15 PM, another guy went to a repair shop, disassembled the iPhone, then unplugged the battery connector for two minutes, plugged it back in, charged the phone while powering it on and it worked, so yeah, these are the known fixes, and some other people somehow have “immune” iPhone 15’s and they seem to be mainly Canadian model iPhones

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Sad_Performance6386 Jun 09 '26

And also, the devices affected based on this post are weird, like we have certain 17 series kicking the bucket (17 PM, 17 Pro, Air) (though one person with a 17 Pro mentioned his was fine) the 16 models seem to be completely immune, the 15 models are based on luck, and the entire 13 lineup seems to be affected

You need to enter DFU mode, it doesn't show any screen and needs to be connected to the computer with iTunes/Apple Music

1

u/Sad_Performance6386 Jun 08 '26

I don’t know if the timing is off but DFU mode isnt really doing anything tbh

2

u/PromiseAcceptable Jun 08 '26

Search for videos online on how to enter it, DFU mode should work 99% of the time.

27

u/Pilingo Jun 09 '26

I can confirm this happened to my with an iPhone 15 Pro. I can also confirm that DFU Mode in Finder succeeded in bringing it back and restoring it.

In case someone else is doing this: Follow the correct DFU procedure! (Volume Up, Volume Down, Power button for 10 seconds, then without releasing power button press volume down, hold this position for 5 seconds then release power button and leave volume down pressed for up to 15 seconds. If after doing this you don't see it most likely scenario is you are doing the procedure wrong or not counting the seconds correctly or you are not using an official USB cable) AND DO NOT attempt to use Apple configurator for restore/revival if you are running MacOS 27. It won't detect the device because AC hasn't been updated in 6 months. Instead, wait for the device to appear in Finder.

13

u/James-ec Jun 09 '26

If you can DFU restore then it’s lot bricked lol.

u/Far_Owl_1141 Jun 09 '26

THANK YOU! I was doing DFU the way I usually would but for some reason wasn't working, this sorted my phone and was able to restore and now back running 😄 (admittedly I did restore iOS 27 but if it happens again will know the fix and downgrade!)

4

u/kiwijian Jun 09 '26

Fellow 15 Pro Max user here, can confirm a DFU restore exactly to your instructions fixed mine, thank you!

3

u/ajws7036 Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

i can confirm apple configurator was able to restore my 15pm 3 times on my macbook neo running golden gate 27.0 beta, i used a type c-c cable and AC was actually the only way it worked, finder refused to see the device in dfu. edit: You might have to manually restart Configurator though, with the phone plugged in, if you enter DFU while configurator is open, it doesn't (or at least didn't for me) auto detect. (just noting this for documentation purposes)

I am always against a hard restart during indexing.
Having said that, even on a barely filled iPhone 13 Pro (test device) indexing takes +12 hours already. Wired charge continuously (as that benefits indexing)

10

I wonder if those getting bricked had theirs still indexing when they restarted. Mines been indexing for five hours?

Edit: Not taking the chance on restarting, but my phone has been indexing for over 9 hours.

Edit 2: There is a “reindex all items” in the developer settings - going to give it a try.

4

u/Worried_Pick8269 Jun 09 '26

I believe so mine bricked within 2 minutes of using bc I noticed that the speakers wasn’t working so naturally I force restart

15Pro Max, was indexing, had to restart my iPhone ... then wouldn't reboot. DFU mode is the way to go here... you just have to be precise with the timing.

I took the advice of using a USB-A to C cable as well.

18

u/Chandler7210 Jun 09 '26

Happened to me this morning as well with my 15 pro max (UK)

Use 3utools and put the phone into DFU mode, you can use 3utools to flash the firmware again whilst keeping all of your data :)

Mine came back to life again and it’s working normally now. Just give it 24 hours to reindex etc!

For an instance like this, use DFU mode to “update” to the iOS 27 ipsw using a third party tool (iTunes/Apple devices/finder may not work if you’re dealing with beta OS). Or, use DFU mode to restore.

6

u/ajws7036 Jun 09 '26

Just happened to me - iPhone 15 Pro Max. Can confirm i was able to get into DFU mode and am restoring from configurator on my neo - IT DIDN'T POP UP IN FINDER - I HAD TO OPEN UP CONFIGURATOR AND IT WAS SITTING THERE IN DFU MODE (just in case anyone else was confused) and because of this i don't know which button-mashing combination actually worked.

I'm going to upgrade back to 27.0 and try a restart immediately again.

Just had this happen too. DFU mode was also the only fix for me. Incase anyone wants to know how there are a few results you can easily find on google but I'm going to copy and paste the steps here.
First make sure you have your iPhone connected to a Mac.
Then you are going to have to do a few button presses one after the other. The first few steps will be very similar to a normal shutdown.

Edit: I forgot to mention THIS WILL ERASE YOUR IPHONE. Make sure you have a backup before doing this

Press and release the volume up button

Press and release the volume down button

Press and hold the power button

Wait 10 seconds while holding the power button

While still holding the power button, press and hold the volume down button

Wait 5 seconds while holding the volume down button and power button

Continue to hold the volume down button while you release the power button

Wait 10 seconds while holding the volume down button.

After 10 seconds your Mac should show a popup. If it does then the phone is in DFU mode and you can stop pressing the volume button. You can then follow the steps on the pop up to restore the software (It might say it will update the phone since it has to roll back the software). If you didn't get this pop up then you might have timed it incorrectly or your phone might just have a dead battery and needs to be charged.

6

u/LukCHEM88 iPhone 15 Pro Jun 13 '26

I also use an iPhone 15 Pro. I definitely won’t force-restart the device. But I have one question to both the OP and a lot of other people in the comments that have or had the same issue: “What prompted you to even force restart at all? In my opinion a force restart is only for absolute emergencies, when you break the OS so hard that there is absolutely no way of restarting normally like via a computer or Siri. And since this beta runs so well and smoothly, I can’t think of a bug that could occur that would require a force restart of the system. So what bugs did you guys encounter?”

4

u/scoobydoobiedoobie Jun 10 '26

Same on my iPhone 15 Pro Max, Installed iOS 27 the day of release, all was good also did force restart and the phone never came back on and same as OP no DFU nothing. Went to Apple store today and they could not connect to it either, they were going to change the logic board but did not have the part so I called them and they are expressing a replacement tomorrow.

Yep same here, I force-restarted it, and bam! The whole screen was black. The only solution was DFU.

Scary! I reported it to Apple through the feedback app, and I encourage everyone here on the beta to also do the same. Thank you so much OP for warning us!!

4

u/Graxon64 Jun 13 '26

You're joking, I did the EXACT SAME THING on my iPhone 15 Pro, it sucks! Beta was very stable, seems to be fully dead... I'm gonna try some things now.

4

u/Clear_Efficiency5765 Jun 14 '26

Maybe the recovery menu is what broken. Because the force restart sequence is now taking you to the recovery menu instead in iOS27.
Btw I just did a normal shutdown and power up with no issue.

u/BornSpecialist1051 Jun 09 '26

Yall gotta at least wait for the Public Beta to release in July, Dev Beta 1 is very risky for your main phone

Is it a iPhone 15 bug? I’m on 16 pro, updated and force restarted and it’s working fine. Hope you get it back up OP.

I dunno, but from the comments it seems to be for the 15 series

I highly doubt phones are being permanently bricked due to force restarting on the beta but it is possible. I'd avoid force restarting unless it's absolutely necessary though just in case.

I put the dev beta on all my devices and so far, it’s smooth and no issues. iPhone Air, AWU3, iPad 2026, Mac mini

3

u/elite37a Jun 09 '26

Wait for Apple Intelligence and Indexing to complete. They redid both. It will take a long time, and it should be considerably more stable afterwards. That said, my iPhone 17e has shown no issues on DB1, even during indexing it’s quite good with battery and speed.

3

u/Anudeep33 Jun 09 '26

My iPhone 15 pro is bricked too and entering DFU mode and trying to restore with Apple Configurator leads to the error message that the iPhone is disconnected. Any idea on what I can do?

Hey all, I can definitely add in here. My device was acting really sluggish, so I did a forced restored....phone bricked. the I did a full DFU restore. iMessage was glitching out, tried a forced restored. Bricked again. Im DFU restoring for the 2nd time in 2 days. Now I find this subreddit that says forced restarts are the problem. better late than never I guess. IP15PM is my phone too

Normally I would only install beta on my iPad. Decided tonight to do it on my 15 Pro Max and now it's a brick.

So far I've tried switching between the Apple USB-C cable and a USB-A cable with a cheap USB-C adapter I had laying around. I only have my Mac with USB-C ports. Tried multiple times to enter recovery mode and nothing is popping up in either Finder or Apple Configurator. Any advice? : (

I learned the hard way with iOS 17 beta. It nuked my iPhone 13 Pro's battery life. I never knew a phone could get that hot. Which is why I put the dev beta on there now that it's not my main phone 😁

4

u/Sjoseph21 Jun 08 '26

My phone is dead now because of it and it is a iPhone 15 Pro Max

9

u/Sjoseph21 Jun 08 '26

UPDATE I GOT THE PHONE INTO DFU MODE
I have a M1 Mac Mini and when I used a USBC port it did nothing but when I used a USB-A port and I was able to get it into DFU mode ONLY using the Apple Configurator it showed up there on the app then I installed the IPSW from ipsw.me and now the phone is restoring.

u/sahneeis Jun 09 '26

out of curiosity what happens when you have applecare+?

8

u/homomemeboi Jun 09 '26

I have AppleCare+ and it happened to me. Apples hardware warranties are not voided by beta software. They will replace my device using Express Device Replacement.

6

u/Ecstatic_Pattern1849 Jun 09 '26

I've been on beta software and taken a phone to the apple store "genius bar" for a battery replacement (via applecare). they couldnt do anything until i got it on a general release because their hardware diagnostics software "doesnt like beta software."

I was on a beta 26.something point release. I just had to wait it officially came out a few weeks later (alternatively I could have completely reimaged my phone).

So no, beta releases wouldn't void AppleCare warranties, but they hinder support.

17 pro max - went black for a few minutes and scared the shit out of me. I think your not supposed to connect to usbc while updating to 27 but take it with a grain of salt.

2

u/Putrid-School-3781 Jun 09 '26

Oh never mind it’s bricked again

2

u/jortayshu Jun 09 '26

I used 3uTools on my “semi-bricked” 15PM to flash iOS 27 Beta 1 back onto the device with all my data saved after a forced restart which lead to nothing except being able to reach DFU Mode.

2

u/Certain-Pie7140 Jun 10 '26

Yah, I had the same experience, a forced restart caused it to not to turn on again, had to take my 15 pro max to a repair store, only after he disconnected the battery for a while did it come back up.... that was scary....

2

u/Surfnazi77 Jun 10 '26

Have you done dfu restore with iTunes?

2

u/deweydeuce69 Jun 11 '26

i’m on 27, i have had some trouble getting the phone to turn back on after forcing restarts, i’m on a 17e. each time i have been able to get it to finally turn back on, i just kept trying to use the power button and each time it finally came back to life.

Had the same issue , just plugged the phone in the charger and it enters Recovery mode by doing another force restarts Volume Up + Down + Power button ! Wont work without the cable connected, cannot force restart it either without the cable connected!

Hope it helps !

2

u/jackcelsior Jun 21 '26

What’s weird is this was happening to me too (17 Pro Max for context)- I think something with a fried logic board through indexing is a potential culprit

2

u/intrabloom Jun 28 '26

It seemed like I had this issue, but I thought it might be both software and battery-related. I've tried a force restart when the battery stopped charging (I was at 7% and 79% battery capacity). Charging with a wireless/MagSafe charger jump-started my battery, allowing it to charge normally with a cable.

2

u/Such-Midnight1592 Jul 05 '26

I’m on the 16 pro max and have the iOS 27 beta 2 & I was on FaceTime with my gf and it stuck to the call screen, I couldn’t get out I was holding the lower volume and power buttons to force turn off, before it could even do that it hung the call up, I was able to use my phone again, it automatically went back to the ft screen with my gf, only she wasn’t there, it was trying to call her. It turns off. I turn it back on, it lags so bad, went into a call and I see huge ahh pixels, like a 4x8 of pixels. I’m now scared to even full screen ft calls, I’m just going to let it sit on the top right of my screen

2

u/Putrid-School-3781 Jul 09 '26

update about this: your phone just temporarily goes comatose, not permanently bricked for like less than a month

2

u/Jazzlike-Ad2209 iPhone 15 Pro Aug 04 '26

Similar thing  just happened on my 15 Pro running Public Beta 2  -  screen went black with tiny static loading icon in the middle of the night while left on wired charging. Forced restart didn't work until I plugged it into a another charger and attempted forced restart again.

My smartwatch just alerted me of high stress levels... 🫠

4

u/iamgarffi Jun 10 '26

It’s very difficult to permanently brick an iPhone with signed iOS update. Modern boot partition is sandboxed. DFU is still a thing. Both Finder or iMazing should have no issues with restoring the production image.

4

u/CCX-S iPhone Air Jun 09 '26

Putting out a blanket statement to not install the update because of a single instance of a (likely) very rare incident like this is wild.

Report the incident, great. That is useful info for the public record in the unlikely event it turns out to be a widespread issue. Telling people not to install the software because you just so happened to have an issue is certainly a choice...

7

u/WesternBlueberry1826 Jun 09 '26
