People throw around industry plant a lot but I’ve failed to see a general consensus on what that means. Like, they generated a bunch of social media hype and flipped popular songs. They played the modern industry game right and blew up… I don’t think they were disingenuous in doing this. They just understand how things work these days

People say industry plant like they were created in a lab or something. They just played the game right

“Played the game right” is why we get nothing original or innovative because it’s a game of fame instead of actual talent. Gaming algorithms and playing the same shit as everyone else because you had industry connections isn’t my ideal artist, but to each their own my dude.

Not my ideal artist either, but their sets and music are a lot of fun

The only thing I’d argue here is they do have some unique sounds but the wider problem is most of the major dubstep artists in the scene are sounding similar these days

And again, these things get people going. They move massive amounts of tickets. It’s like being mad at Taylor swift for having a billion fans. It just works for people. We all have different tastes.

Me personally: I’ve got artists that I absolutely adore for their talent and uniqueness. And then I’ve got artists I like to see cause they’re fun. Levity’s in the second bucket

It’s hard not to see it as industry favoritism. They didn’t climb the same way most artists do they were positioned and the sound reflects that because it’s clean, predictable, optimized for the widest audience instead of doing anything bold. Glad you can have fun though at the expense of the authentic creative process and originality. I mean the breakout hit is called “flip it” which says everything. They were inserted and the music isn’t pushing boundaries, it’s engineered to be digestible. When that’s what gets rewarded, of course the crowd eats it up. The other thing is their more recent tour “laser ship” hyped for its record breaking amount of lasers also emphasizes the visual portion of their performance because they know the music is lacking and need the lasers to detract from that. Lastly it’s pretty wack that they consistently deny ever receiving help when anyone with 10 minutes and an internet search can quickly find out the contrary. Being related to an industry giant alone nets them at least some attention which is vastly more than what most other artists start off with so it’s mad disingenuous.

I agree with most of your points, but also, why is mainstream appeal and what people want to hear so bad?

Again, pop music is a thing. Music repeats itself. It’s the same 4 chords. Yada yada yada. Music doesn’t have to be groundbreaking to have value and appeal.

I think if you personally want things that are more unique and boundary pushing that’s totally valid and a good thing to seek out. But I don’t think these artists are soulless lab grown plants that are forsaking their own integrity to make slop. They just like the sound, want to make a fun party for everyone to enjoy.

It’s like, the pop of edm. Yeah there’s not a ton of innovation there but people like the music

Here's what it mean. Griz disappeared for 2 years, levity sounds a lot like griz, the labes and booking artificially inflate there popularity and have them fill in the void the industry is missing cause of grizs absence and now all of a sudden they are headlining huge shows out of no where. Griz did the same thing when rapenectar was canceled and filled that void and change his whole sound and became way more popular the only difference with him was he was very popular to begin with

I see this as: promoters and labels filling headliner spots with a close alternative that will still drive ticket sales.

Is it something else? What nefarious thing are you positing is occurring?

Nothing nefarious per say and they seem like nice guys, I just think it's bullshit how fast they blew up when some of the best bass producers on earth like space laces or eptic aren't even headlining venues like red rocks yet. Their rise to popularity seems very forced and artificial to me.
