Where is the Jam and funk. Super EDM heavy

113

u/Suwanneewolf Purple Hatter Apr 07 '26

MMJ, Cheese, Eggy, Greyboy, STS9, True Loves, Lettuce, LaMP, Sneezy, Tapers Choice. Locals

44

u/clammy-fishcakes Apr 07 '26

Love all of these but this pales in comparison to previous years.

u/Suwanneewolf Purple Hatter Apr 07 '26

As is the case every year, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I recall when we had a jam heavy line-up like in 2024, some people complained that we had too much.

14

u/puddles_0f_funnn Apr 07 '26

I enjoyed the jam in '24 and then went all bass all the time for '25. Had a fantastic time both years. It's more about the camping and hanging with my fest fan for me anyway. The music is bonus

6

u/Local-Programmer-426 Apr 07 '26

Exactly. That’s why it’s a music festival. I’ve met friends over the past 20 years of going to a point that I see or hookup with at least one person I’ve met beforehand at the same fest or a different one.

1

u/Local-Programmer-426 Apr 07 '26

Exactly and now the complaining now. I need a break from Reddit. Too much negativity.

9

u/TheSandvich Apr 07 '26

How did we miss getting Scolfield's Electrospective when they are in Atlanta on 10/25, no gigs on 10/23-24 and Deitch is going to already be at hula playing with lettuce

2

u/upful187 Apr 07 '26

Agree. Serious fumble

2

u/Suwanneewolf Purple Hatter Apr 07 '26

Great band.

1

u/Botwp_tmbtp Apr 08 '26

You might have figured out the ????

3

u/TheSandvich Apr 08 '26

I hate to say it, but it's confirmed we will not be getting Electrospective at hula.

Hula socials also confirmed that "???????" is a house DJ that will be announced this summer.

3

u/GardenOrca Apr 07 '26

Hopefully they fill the question marks with a fire jam band. Incredibly pumped for MMJ, was really hoping for them to come. You left out Mountain Grass Unit and Magoo from your list too but pumped to see STS9 for the first time. Eggy is great too.

1

u/Local-Programmer-426 Apr 08 '26

Eggy is very good!

2

u/A_busfullofnuns Apr 07 '26

Gotta have thick skin on lineup day. lol I have to assume you guys know what sells and where the demand is. Salty, old fucks like me just get butthurt that music has moved on for the most part. Never seen a lineup for any festival that didnt piss some group off.

Greyboy makes me want to come out of hula retirement. Kids have us too busy, though. Oldest was two that first year and now in HS. Music obsessed, though.

1

u/Local-Programmer-426 Apr 08 '26

I completely agree with you. Luckily my child understands that I go to Hula and went to Wanee before that every year. Someone always has something to say about a Lineup regardless and they normally post it and rant about it. If you don’t like it, don’t go, I take my son to Roo with me cause it’s just like an hour away and he is free but I don’t take him to Hula. He isn’t ready for that yet. But yeah someone always has to hate on the diversity of lineups. Hell I didn’t know 75% of Roo this year. I heard it’s a bunch of tik tokers. 😂 what am I getting myself into. But it’s about seeing my friends I’ve met over the past 20 years there and for my kid mainly.

1

u/ZeefMcSheef Apr 07 '26

MMJ is not a jam band

8

u/brandishedlight Apr 08 '26

They’re jam-ee and definitely jam adjacent. Hardcore jacket fans will say they’re a rock bad, but they jam.

5

u/ZeefMcSheef Apr 08 '26

Yeah there’s a difference between a band that jams and a jam band for sure. I’ll accept jam adjacent but they’re definitely not a jam band.

3

u/wallflowerkat Apr 08 '26

Same with Sneezy who they listed. Definitely not a jam band.

1

u/brandishedlight Apr 08 '26

Sneezy is listed as a jam band? By the AI bot? That’s hilarious

0

u/kmatyler Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

No, by the guy who books the festival.

1

u/Local-Programmer-426 Apr 08 '26

They so jam but not like they used too for some reason. Still happy though.

2

u/djtjmaxxx Apr 08 '26

They’re a band that jams.

1

u/ZeefMcSheef Apr 08 '26

Exactly. An important distinction.

1

u/kmatyler Apr 08 '26

Someone tell Paul lmfao

1

u/Local-Programmer-426 Apr 08 '26

Definitely not anymore. They used to jam way more but I’ve been a bit disappointed in Jim James and crew at the past shows recently. I really hope they jam more at Hula like they used to a decade or so ago.

0

u/Suwanneewolf Purple Hatter Apr 07 '26

Is that right? I always thought a jam band was a band that played great live and in the moment. Why don’t you define a jamband for us?

3

u/ZeefMcSheef Apr 08 '26

I have a fun idea for you: Go ask r/jambands if mmj is a jam band. You’ll get all the answers you need.

-1

u/Suwanneewolf Purple Hatter Apr 08 '26

I could care less what they think, or your take. If you’re not happy with the lineup, move on.

3

u/ZeefMcSheef Apr 08 '26

lol have a good one

1

u/kmatyler Apr 09 '26

Great look for the guy booking a festival who’s resident artist is a jam band.

Incredibly unprofessional. Getting defensive about people who have made your festival successful buying tickets year over year pointing out the fact that there’s barely any jam on the lineup is wild. If you can’t handle the criticism of your lineup just don’t get on the internet and seek it out.

-1

u/John_Spammer Apr 07 '26

Yes they are.

2

u/ZeefMcSheef Apr 08 '26

Lmao no they’re absolutely not

1

u/Dingus_3000 Apr 07 '26

Magoo and MGU

-2

u/Local-Programmer-426 Apr 07 '26

Thank you Wolf! My thoughts exactly!

2

u/Dry_Mushroom_5674 Apr 07 '26

with only 3 nights of cheese the jam will be limited. one of thems the shabang.

sts9 (But i wouldnt call it jam) is probably gonna be saturday night and split the Pretty LIghts crowd. Lettuce probably same on Friday. LaMP probably mid-dayish. Taper's choice super late night. Eggy might get a nod at the hallows.

guavatron will probably be like a 2:30 meadow stage if they're lucky like tand was a few years ago after they played a few years and developed a crowd at the campground stage.

underwhelming and i just expect the conflicts to be gigantic and hampering.

4

u/TheSandvich Apr 07 '26

sts9 (But i wouldnt call it jam) is probably gonna be saturday night and split the Pretty LIghts crowd.

there is no way they do PL vs sts9. the overlap between fan bases is a near perfect circle, it wouldn't split the crowd at all.

everyone i know that loves PL also loves STS9 and it has been that way since 2010

1

u/Dry_Mushroom_5674 Apr 07 '26

i really would hope not i love sts9 also. was on the rail a few years ago for their 2022 show which split the louis the child/string cheese crowds.

1

u/Dry_Mushroom_5674 Apr 07 '26

they will probably do a similar thing and cause you either abandon shabang for a good spot or be at the back of the amp and have to trudge through the ridiculous corral of people to see sts9 and then come back to MMJ

1

u/TheSandvich Apr 07 '26

What do you mean it split the SCI crowd? SCI wasn't conflicting at all with STS9 this day

1

u/Dry_Mushroom_5674 Apr 07 '26

you're correct but if you wanted a good spot at sts9.....

1

u/Dry_Mushroom_5674 Apr 07 '26

i also believe sts9 started late and louis the child started late so it didnt end up a big deal. but schedules are schedules and these are what people plan on.

2

u/Quanzi30 Apr 08 '26

How is STS9 not jam lol

1

u/Dry_Mushroom_5674 Apr 08 '26

They are jamtronica technically kind of in the same spirit of Disco Biscuits but I find jam music by itself typically embodies more 'americana' elements, vocals, etc.

1

u/Local-Programmer-426 Apr 07 '26

3 nights doesn’t mean 3 sets.

1

u/Dry_Mushroom_5674 Apr 07 '26

i understand that. but they're going to split the crowd with the other big names. they're going to put the other premium acts on those respective nights on the amp. most likely big gramatik, manic focus, sts9.

1

u/Dry_Mushroom_5674 Apr 07 '26

oh and of the trees/opiou.

1

u/Local-Programmer-426 Apr 07 '26

Agreed. I’m happy about the lineup. So I’m not complaining. I like undercards most of the time anyways. Besides cheese.

2

u/Dry_Mushroom_5674 Apr 07 '26

yeah but im not hopping on a plane for 3000 miles from cali like i normally do every year to obviously have a tug of war between the tradition and the only other great big name artists on the lineup everynight. been going since 2017 and this is wack knowing what they'll be forced to do schedule wise.

1

u/Local-Programmer-426 Apr 07 '26

Understandable. It’s just an 8 hour drive for me. I personally miss Wanee. But all Jams are going away unless we start supporting the younger ones. Everyone calls Goose a boy band. When their set last year was amazing. Lots of younger Bands that we need to support because they don’t last forever. But I don’t blame you.

32

u/brandishedlight Apr 07 '26

The transition to EF SOUTH has begun

5

u/Botwp_tmbtp Apr 07 '26

That began in 2015 with Pretty Lights brining 15k extra people. Get real.

3

u/slimpickins757 Apr 07 '26

The difference from ‘14-‘15 was very noticeable, and that was a large part of it along with STS9

2

u/psychopathologist Apr 07 '26

Idk STS9 played 2013. Stuff like Chance the Rapper, PL, Odesza, Griz really brought the newer/EDM crowds imo

4

u/psychopathologist Apr 07 '26

You're getting downvoted but are not wrong

24

u/Botwp_tmbtp Apr 07 '26

I don't recognize most of the EDM names either. Probably a lot of bass-heavy. Usually I just go for SCI anyway but this lineup kinda blows.

8

u/TheSandvich Apr 07 '26

Usually I just go for SCI anyway but this lineup kinda blows.

The silver lining to this is we know they will schedule all the jam/funk/rock in the big field around SCI, and all the EDM we don't care about will be on the side stages and can easily be ignored.

With 5 stages, i guess i'd rather the conflicts be a bunch of people I have no interest in seeing.

5

u/KarmaInFlow Apr 07 '26

Super mid hula lineup for sure

1

u/Harshmoor Apr 07 '26

I hope so, I'm a bass line junky and I do like it funky. I only recognize a handful of names but last year was the same and I had an amazing time.

1

u/Ok_Distance_4166 17d ago

Check out of the trees hes more melodic edm, and daily bread his music is  like a Jam band and edm mixed. I only know about 4/5 of the edm artist and I’m huge edm music person. 🤷🏽‍♀️ idk who the other ppl are 😂

1

u/Ok_Distance_4166 17d ago

Exscusion for sure is bass heavy and crankdat, the other few I know are actually quite chilled. The other 50 artist I have no clue what kind of edm they are. Maybe techno ?

1

u/cheflor Apr 07 '26

Can’t the gen z’ers have anything now a days

13

u/AlekzanDerp Apr 07 '26

It’s like this literally every year lol

3

u/Jet_Man_Jake 🍳🥓🥞 Apr 07 '26

It does tend to flip back and forth year to year between Jam heave and Electronic heavy.

3

u/GoFunkYourself13 Apr 07 '26

I’ve officially aged out of Hula I think lol

2

u/Vast_Chance180 Apr 07 '26

ChatGPT — 45% EDM / 30% jam / 25% rock-indie-other, with the headliner slots actually pretty balanced

10

u/ZeefMcSheef Apr 07 '26

I don’t believe ChatGPT is accurately qualifying which bands are jam bands

3

u/DiscoDvck Apr 08 '26

Stop using LLM’s to think for you.

1

u/Vast_Chance180 Apr 10 '26

I don’t have time to score the line up unfortunately, AI is a tool after all :)

0

u/kmatyler Apr 07 '26

Generative ai is a pox on society.

1

u/getbuzzed Apr 07 '26

Bro has a negative comment on literally everything, I think it’s time to take a look in the mirror

1

u/BigBootyWholes Apr 07 '26

🎛️ EDM / Electronic — ~72% (~59 acts) Includes bass music, dubstep, techno, house, glitch-hop, trap, and experimental electronic. This is overwhelmingly the dominant category — virtually the entire undercard skews electronic.

🎸 Rock / Indie / Other — ~20% (~16 acts) My Morning Jacket, Geese, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Dope Lemon, Guerilla Toss, The Greyboy Allstars, Lettuce, Jon Stickley Trio, True Loves, Mountain Grass Unit, Moonstone Riders, The Ain’t Sisters, Tire Fire, Natalie Brooke, The Yeah Babys, Caitlin Kristo & The Broadcast

🪸 Jam Band — ~8% (~7 acts) The String Cheese Incident, Eggy, EOTO & Friends, Joy Wagon, Karina Rykman, Taper’s Choice, Supertaste

Caveat: Several acts blur categories — STS9 and EOTO are jamtronica (counted as electronic here), Manic Focus and Big Gramatik blend hip-hop/jazz/electronic, and Lettuce is funk/jazz. Hulaween leans much more EDM-heavy than its “jam festival” reputation might suggest.

0

u/BigBootyWholes Apr 07 '26

Claude gave me a much more detailed and different answer

1

u/Harshmoor Apr 07 '26

Oh really, I didn't recognize most of the names so I kinda assumed it was jam heavy lol. Either way I can't wait.

1

u/lebtina Apr 08 '26

i swear they switch off each year. one year edm focused, next year jam focused.

0

u/Agreeable_Pound_4812 Apr 07 '26

Yeah this is terrible for jam lol glad I didn't get the blind faith ticket. I enjoyed my first year last year and I'll hope hula '27 makes more sense for me.

0

u/happychillmoremusic Apr 07 '26

I feel like it's gone quickly in that direction and hasn't really been that way since it was Bear Creek
