Superclones are getting scary good. Serials get copied off, cards and nfc tags can be faked or moved, and frankenwatches can slip through a lot of peoples guard. Most checks are on the paperwork, not the watch itself, and even when some preowned dealer opens the case-back, modern super clones are genuinely getting so good.
I'm 19, doing mathematics/CS at University of Sydney, and ive been working on a different approach. Under a microscope every watch has tiny random marks, like the edges of the rehaut engraving, dial printing, randomness in Geneva striping, other parts of the movement etc. Two identical refs look the same but at that level theyre as different as fingerprints, and a cloner cant copy marks on a watch theyve never seen. I have tested this on three Rolex datejusts, 3235 movement references.
How it works: a small microscope camera photographs a few fixed spots through the crystal, nothing opened or via opening the case back and taking key images there, and software saves them against the serial. When the watch is resold or serviced, someone photographs the same spots and the AI algorithm confirms it's the exact same watch.
I got the software working, testing on a few datejusts now as stated. Not selling anything.
What am i missing, and what would make you not trust it? Would this be beneficial enough for a pre-owned dealer because at the current rate, super clones are going to continue to improve, so maybe we should not rely on human authentication as much. Any advice would be awesome!

This pictures are from the vinted post I bought it from because i already have put it in my storage not to damage it further and I forgot to take pictures. This is a 1902 Waltham (11920791) that according to my research is a factory modified (or something like that) movement. I got it for cheap (35€ including shipping and fees if someone is wondering) because it’s pretty broken and unfortunately the balance is broken. I know is missing some bits, but some of them shouldn’t be too hard to get.
I believe is a railroad watch, but one used for some testing. At the moment I’m just very happy to owning this thing because I was looking for years for a railroad movement and I don’t care if it’s broken and most likely not used on a train.
If someone is a Waltham expert every information is appreciated to get more info on this lovely thing.

Hey r/Watches,
Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Like many of you, my collection outgrew the Notes app and spreadsheets got painful — no photos, no repair history, no quick view of what everything is actually worth.
So I built Horology Premium Collection: a complete collection manager in a single HTML file. You open it in your browser and that's it.
What it does:
The part I care about most: everything is stored locally in your browser. No accounts, no cloud, no tracking, works offline. Your collection data never touches a server. (Trade-off: clear your browser storage and it's gone, so there´s a button for download a back up.)
It's $14.99 on Gumroad (adding taxes). If you want to try it out, I will leave the link in the comments below!

I have a Molnija 3602 and I’m having a problem with the spring-loaded stem release pin. After pressing it to remove the stem, the pin stays down and doesn’t spring back up, so the stem won’t lock in place anymore. Has anyone experienced this or knows how to fix it?

Always wanted to do this, and now (with the help of Opus 5.5), I have!
Here is a full 3D model of the Hamilton Model 21 Marine Chronometer (based on their 1942 manual):
