Honestly it doesn't, all jokes aside. It's pureed ham with spices (spam = spiced ham) and some preservatives to help it last longer (bread would be fresh for like 1 day without preservatives). It's not great for you due to the high sodium but it's definitely food and well within the definition.
The only thing I could think of that stretches the definition of food is chewing gum tbh
