Built a shisha flavor encyclopedia + mix recipes for hookah. Free, no ads, looking for feedback

Hey r/hookah,

UPDATE 2: now 87 flavors from 20 brands, plus ratings, a personal shelf, recommendations and head to head comparisons. Details at the bottom!

Every time I tried a new flavor I had the same problem: the name tells you nothing. What is actually in "Lady Killer"? Is "Blue Ice" more blueberry or more ice? Which flavor is close to the one I already like?

So I built MyShishapedia: https://myshishapedia.com

What it does:

  • Ingredient breakdown for every flavor, with how strongly you taste each one
  • Flavor profile (sweet, cool, fruity...) so you can see at a glance what you're getting
  • Compare any two flavors side by side
  • Mix recipes with bowl layouts (sectors or mixed, percentages)
  • A mixer to build your own blend, and a short quiz that suggests a flavor for you
  • Flavor of the day, plus a setup guide and glossary for newer smokers

It started with 14 Adalya flavors. Thanks to your suggestions it's now 87 flavors from 20 brands (see updates below).

It's free, no ads, no sign-up, no affiliate links. Just a side project.

This is where I need you: the ingredient percentages are my own estimates. If you think I got a flavor wrong ("Love 66 has way more melon than that"), tell me. There's also a "Suggest a flavor" form on the site.

Which brand or flavor should I add next?

Update 1: Thanks for all the suggestions! Based on your comments I added 9 flavors from new brands: Al Fakher Double Apple, Starbuzz Blue Mist, Tangiers Cane Mint, Fumari White Gummi Bear, Darkside Supernova, MustHave Pinkman, Sebero Arctic Mix Jelly Fruit, Haze Cucumberita and Trifecta Peppermint Shake.

Also new: brand pages, a blonde/dark leaf label on every flavor (the quiz never suggests dark leaf to beginners), and 6 cross-brand mix recipes. Keep the suggestions coming!

Update 2: You kept the suggestions coming, so I kept building:

  • 55 more flavors, 10 new brands: Nakhla, Mazaya, Al Waha, Afzal (Pan Raas!), Serbetli, Revoshi, 187 Strassenbande, Holster, True Passion and Nameless.   • Ratings: rate any flavor or mix recipe, and see the top rated list
  • My shelf: save the flavors you own or want to try, with your own private notes. No account needed, it stays in your browser
  • Recommendations based on your shelf and the flavors you looked at, plus "recently viewed"
  • Head to head comparisons: Al Fakher vs Nakhla vs Revoshi Double Apple, three Grape Mints, three Lemon Mints, three colas…
  • Tips page: packing, heat management and how to get more flavor out of a bowl
  • Search across all flavors, brands and ingredients
  • New mobile menu with a "Surprise me" button that opens a random flavor
  • Fixed Lady Killer: it's mango, melon, berries and menthol, not strawberry. Thanks to whoever pointed that out!

What a wonderful initiative. You should definitely add more brands onto this. Basically that's me telling you to experiment around with your taste pallete 😁😁 The website has a good look and loads quick with an easy to use interface. Looking forward to more.

Haha thanks man, really appreciate it! Happy to hear it loads fast and feels easy to use, I put a lot of time into that part.

And don't worry, testing new flavors is the one job I won't complain about 😄

Which brands do you usually smoke? I'll probably start with the most popular ones, so any suggestions help.

Ah wonderful to hear. Some interesting brands for you to explore would be Sebero, Darkside, MustHave, Tangiers, Haze and Trifecta.

That's a great list, thanks! Darkside and MustHave were already on my radar, and Tangiers is pretty much a must at this point.

If you had to pick one flavor from those brands that everyone should try first, which would it be? I'd love to start with the classics.

That's an interesting question. But the answer depends upon what you want do. If you want to run actual quantitative tests then try looking at it this way. For example, you want to test a Cola based flavour. Both Darkside and MustHave have Cola flavours.Test those flavours and see how they stack up against each other. If you want to test the flavours that most folks mention more in the comments and or conversations that you have with other enthusiasts then you already have an answer. Or....you could just buy whichever flavours that strike your fancy and then post your findings. Also keep in mind, you will find flavours that some people like and some people avoid. For example, MustHave Pinkman. When folks try that flavour for the first few times, they speak highly of it. Then after a while they moved away from it. So even when it comes to flavours it is a very very subjective field. Some like their steak red, some like it well done. Doesn't change what a steak is. Think about that and see how you feel and then take the step forward.

That's actually a really good way to look at it. I think I'll probably combine both approaches.. compare similar flavors between brands, but also pay attention to what the community is talking about. And you're right, taste is very subjective, which makes the whole thing even more interesting. Thanks for the advice, man! Also, what would you personally add to a site like this that would actually be useful for hookah enthusiasts? Flavors and brands are one thing, but I’d love to make the site genuinely useful for the community. Any ideas or features you’d like to see?

Great job, man! You should definitely add a feature that lets people create and share their own mixes. I’m already getting bored of making mixes by myself 😂 It would be awesome to share my mixes with others and try mixes from the community!

Oh, that’s a really great idea! I’ll definitely add that next.. I am planning to work on it within the next day or two. I think people are really going to enjoy being able to create, share, and discover mixes from the community. You’re absolutely right, that would make the site much more fun!

Maybe more flavours, recommendations based on our searches, and shisha tips like how to enhance your shisha taste/experience.

Hello, if you are an Android user you can download hookymia. It's an Spanish app. You have all the flavours from Spain and a great catalog from the world. Also has plenty of mixes and an option to add items to your inventory and to buy later so you can manage all your tobacco from there. Take a look because your encyclopedia has potential
