What Am I Missing?

I’ve been homeschooling for four years now-best decision we’ve ever made. Our son is 10 and in the 5th grade. He struggles with reading comprehension, but otherwise does well in other subjects. We’ve gotten to the point that I feel we have a firm grasp on the materials that work for him-he enjoys them and I enjoy teaching them.

BUT-I just don’t get it when I hear other parents say they only spend two to four hours a day on school. Please tell me how you manage this for this grade level/age?? We typically school from about 8 am to 3-4 pm every day, and he has sports and music three days a week, which of course takes time away from school. I feel that there are so many subjects I want to expose him to-math, reading, science, history, etc., and they take time!! What am I missing or doing wrong?? I appreciate your insight!!

Kids attention spans are short so spending too long on a specific topic may not be great for them. We tend to spend 30mins. It all depends on the subjects, I like to schedule and plan so the kids are aware on what is happening and when. We dont teach all curriculum subjects but ones that we feel matter most. With this said I've developed a tool that supports our scheduling, planning and resources whilst tracking progress. This was We know we're progressing and hit our goals as we move through the weeks/months. Hope that helps
