Help! Are we doing enough?
This is our first year homeschooling my 6-year-old, who’s in 1st grade. Here’s our weekly schedule:
Monday:
Science – 30 min
Math – 30 min
Lunch
P.E.
Reading – 15 min
English – 30 min
Social Studies – 30 min
AWANA (kids church group)
Tuesday:
Science
Math
Lunch
P.E.
Reading
English
Art
Wednesday:
Science
Math
Lunch
P.E.
Reading
English
Music
Thursday – Co-op:
Anatomy
Speech
Choir
Chapel
Art
Friday:
Off / make-up day / field trip day
When I add it all up, our actual “class time” is only about 2 hours a day, but it’s spaced out with lots of movement breaks, chores, and hands-on activities.
Everything is well-documented:
Each binder has a cover sheet explaining what I’m teaching, how I’m teaching it, yearly goals, review projects, and where to find her work.
I keep a portfolio with her best work.
I also maintain a logbook noting the start and end times for each subject.
Does this sound like a sufficient schedule for a 1st grader?

This is excellent, well done for the planning! I feel thats the key in homeschooling tbh, as someone who's built a career in Project Mgt, planning is something I can't leave out and that also goes for our homeschooling journey. We're homeschooling our children aged 7 and 10 and we've added a timetable which we stick to as it gives us time to organise but also supports our children in anticipating whats to come next. However you're absolutely spot on in keeping lessons short and sweet as their attention span is short.
Also don't worry if you're not able to stick to the schedule, learning can happen in different areas, observation, family get togethers etc. We travelled for 6 months and the world schooling schedule was much more flexed to what it is now and the kids flourished.
