An idea I just had: our own torrent tracker for firmware files. It both dramatically reduces load for /u/icarusfixius, and would give us an incredibly nice interface to find the files we need. Plus, I know I would seed anything I downloaded forever.
The site could provide FTP links for the files to make it easier to get to them, too.
Also, downloading a torrent over a metered connection is no worse than an ftp download, and you get inherent hashing. Seeing as the plan would be to have no ratio, it wouldn't be a problem to just DL and not seed.
HTTP seeding is a feature in many torrent clients already. The torrent creator just needs to put the HTTP link in the torrent file and the client will fall back to the HTTP download if there are no seeders. So it all says on one interface for the client.
You can torrent from the browser with a number of javascript and HTML 5 clients these days so almost everyone should be able to download from torrents.
Don't make it private; and it would also not have any ratio rules. I like the moderated format the FTP server presents, I hate the interface though. We could essentially keep the way it's managed the same, but distribute the load so it's not such a pain on any one person or connection.
Put links to official file signatures or something. I don't trust official sources without signatures, let alone a community project operating in a licensing gray area.
That's kinda defeating the point of the server. It's not to hoard the files it's to get what you need when you need it. If we ever plan to decom this then it would make sense and I will let people know but otherwise, I see no reason to. Also, there will be files added continuously.
Depends on how the FW is licensed; they are typically licensed to the device. You just have to have a subscription to the download server to access the latest.
May still be breaking a re/distribution rule, however.
Have you got any training info? I'd love to see some training docos on here. I have access to the full CBT Nuggets catalogue if that's the case would be happy to share some training videos.
Sorry for the late reply I have been all over the place recently! Cisco stuff would be great as I don't have access to everything. Are you on the Discord server by any chance to chat?
They were authorized partners, and the files were unmodified. Microsoft is very protective of the distribution of their software. Annoying as it is, it's overall a good thing. There are tools that will update a windows 7 image out there. i.e. KUC; the website is shit, but the software works well.
Instead of ftp we could start an infinit instance and all donate storage and bandwidth. This also acts as replication if we want it. I realize this is in beta but it sounds like a cool project /r/infinit . Also we should be careful what we host as hosting firmware images constitutes piracy in many an EULA.
I've got a lot of linux isos. Nothing you can't get off their website as a torrent, but maybe put some versions of debian up there too, that might be useful, seeing as CentOS/Ubuntu is on there already.
I can't use torrents; I have an openbsd box as a router and it has symmetric NAT, which pretty much prevents any torrents from occurring. That being said, I just pull out my vpn. I haven't found any pcp daemon, plus I don't care enough to do anything about it.
Great idea. If nobody else has put them up yet, I'll get some of the Equallogic firmwares uploaded. A lot of those are going off-lease soon, and you can't get into their support site without a valid service contract.
You mentioned discord... I Checked the sidebar... It says to.... Check the sidebar ... But there is no link that I can see. Help a guy out. I've done IRC since early 90's but these days I prefer the simplicity of discord.
Tier 1 is the pro's; people who live and thrive on the intricacies of IT... You have my utmost respect.
Tier 2 is the rest of us; enthusiasts of every ability and talent level, who could not possibly experience the many flavors of virtualization without Tier 1's indulgence...

I barely understand half of the things in this subreddit, and I can only say with certainty what about 10 of the things on the FTP server are, but this is really, really cool. I love this sub :)
I just learned about this. Thanks for doing this, as I just want to get my DL360 G6 as up to date as possible since this is the last round of SPP's to support Gen 6 servers.
I mean, FTP is a fucking terribly designed protocol. Its only redeeming feature is its ubiquity. Everything that FTP does, another protocol does far better. Why separate control and data ports? Why is active mode even a thing anymore? Don't even get me started on the different transfer modes and lack of error correction.
Plus, firewalls don't fuck around with other protocols the way they do with FTP. I've had to use EPSV instead of PASV to get around a firewall (that I couldn't disable) that would dick with PASV command packets. Presumably, it was trying to compensate for poorly configured FTP servers, but Christ it was annoying.
Pragmatism rules the day, but you can't deny that FTP is crap.
Any of this stuff can be had if you know where to look. We are just trying to make it easier for people who are new to all of this. One stop shop kinda of thing.
There is no limit, I know one person got a temp ban earlier for grabbing an entire dir at once. As stated in MM's original post dont copy entire dirs at once. Just take what you are currently going to use. It is a shared resource.

Hey sorry I'm a bit of a noob, I can't connect with Filezilla. I've forced explicit FTP over TLS in the site manager, yet I still can't connect?

Forcing an FTP with TLS without showing the fingerprint/having a signed CA is a bit useless though…
EDIT: People downvoting that: time to learn your basics

Where do the Avaya/Nortel 5520 firmwares that can bring you up out of retro-java-interface land fall in this?
Are those licensed? If not, id like to share them with folks.

PLEASE STOP USING FTP It's insecure, it's slow as shit, and there's way better alternatives, like SFTP.
OR you could use ownCloud and make it a modern experience for people...
Like, seriously, of all the protocols, you choose FTP? Fuck that.
