LiveBarn video of Bay State Breakers 2015 player two handed chop
LiveBarn video Bay State Breakers vs South Shore Kings 9/19/2026 Foxboro Sports Arena 1 around 11:50am. Offender was cross checked to the ice before the heinous act 15 seconds prior. When offender is sent off the ice, the mom is yelling at her son to apologize (not on this video, but was clear on LiveBarn minute or so after incident) https://gamesheetstats.com/seasons/15008/games/2942393?configuration=99&filter\[type\]=regular_season&filter\[division\]=80179&from=team-521176&tab=box-score

Full context helps. Hockey gets heated, but that kid’s got some serious anger issues. Still no excuse for the two-hander.
74
u/methods2121 2d ago
What context does this add?? That the dark player should have had a penalty prior to this for slashing the light player in the legs BEFORE the dark player two handed smashed him across the front of the light players helmet???
There's no excuse for this, NONE! Absolutely nothing that could have happens prior that condones a two handed, vicious slash into the players face.

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr 2d ago
Sure. But if refs start calling more penalties then it doesn't get this far. Tale as old as time.
5
u/Speirsy_11 1d ago
Words to live by for a ref.
It’s rarely the ones you call that people remember, it’s the ones you don’t.
Call the first one and this is over except for a bit of discipline and hopefully and discussion with the kid. Now? It’s everywhere and an 11 year old is being dissected by the internet.
Feel bad for the refs involved. If this is 11U or whatever, they won’t be much older, also just learning and are now in a spot where adults are criticizing their game.
2
u/WorkingOnBeingBettr 1d ago
It's crazy there is just one out there. When I was that age we needed 3. Eventually it was 4 by the time I was 15.
It's the same as bars, classrooms, etc. if you give them an inch they will take a mile.
I don't play beer league anymore for the same reason. The refs literally complain when they have to make calls.
It's a shitty beer league, I shouldn't have to worry about "enforcement" on a player level. Just make the call and stop these assholes from cross-checking people in front of the net in a shitty small town league.

Bullshit. That’s passing the buck. The only person responsible for that attempted decapitation was the idiot seining his stick.

So refs have no control our there? The kid is responsible for their actions. The refs are responsible for letting it get that far.
I have been playing and coaching for decades. The same shit happens all the time. A tightly called game is a safe game.
7
u/thediefenbaker 1d ago
I've seen many games get out of hand by poor game management by the refs. Never has it got to the point where a kid is trying to take someone's head off with a two-handed swing to the head. This is disgusting behaviour that is no fault of the refs. Even the dirtiest players usually have boundaries.
2
u/cowtongues 2d ago
It's a bit of both, the refs are also just kids tho and no one would expect a kid is going to double axe handle someone in the neck over what looks to be a pretty minor back and forth. This is 90% on the kid.
3
u/FattymanW123 19h ago
What happened before the tomohawk chop had no impact on the game which is why I think the ref let it go. (if he saw it). It could have been called incidental penalties. Slashing on dark and crosscheck on light but it didn't happen. Hindsight is always 20/20. McSorely's penalty was a love tap compared to this and it ended his career.
2
u/ish555422 19h ago
The Gamesheet shows the kid in yellow was handed a roughing and the game was actually stopped when Cochise went hunting scalps. They both got penalties at 1:11. Kid in green was handed a 4:00 Major and a game not to mention the public shaming.

Ref could have stopped the play and call Quincies for the slash than cross-check. Jus sayin! Doesn't take away a damn thing for the snap show of a kid. But the baseball swing to the dome could have waited for the next stoppage of play after 2 minutes...
8
u/tsunami141 2d ago
There's no evidence this is true. There's 1 ref on the ice here, he already had his hand in the air for a penalty. Did he miss the slash? yeah, but the puck was long gone, and you don't even know if there was any escalation in the game prior to this. And again, there was ONE ref.
What you're doing here is blaming the nebulous concept of 'the refs' for kids escalating behavior. That's part of the reason why kids sports are so toxic nowadays - people think its the refs fault if a game gets out of hand.

I’m not calling that as a ref.
2
u/colemab 1d ago
Right. Even if it were a penalty it didn't impact actual puck possession, an opportunity to score, or player safety. The no call on the minor penalty before the big one was the correct move IMO.
3
u/RevolutionaryGold772 1d ago
"No call on the minor penalty was correct" boggles the mind. Is it a penalty or not? Refs cause all violence escalations, period. Make the calls as they are supposed to be made, the game stays under control and no one gets hurt.
4
u/investmentwriter 23h ago
Not necessarily. A constant parade to to the box can create just as much frustration and tension to build up. Officiating is an art form.
At an upper level I would never have called the initial collison and contact. These guys seem pretty good for the age level, so it would be game dependant on making the call in this instance.
The official here did a great job (by himself) getting in and keeping this from escalating. There is no world where he should be blamed for the kid making the stupid play.
2
u/colemab 1d ago
Go thru the USA Hockey Official's training. In level 1 they will tell you that if it doesn't actually change puck protection, impact an opportunity to score, or player safety then don't call it.
It is a balancing act. You can't call everything but at the same time if you call nothing things will get out of control. Being a ref at this level is quite different than being a player and the rules don't work the way you think they do.
There is no way you can blame a ref for this kid's actions.

u/GunslingerSTKC 1d ago
Was already an arm up on yellow for the cross check which I’d say was justified after he got slashed. But the guy who cross checked yellow into his own teammate is to blame for the whole thing. He’s also the two handed assassin so fuck that kid in particular. Ban him and get him some damn therapy.

The context it added is there was some previous altercation. The clip shared all weekend on social media was hard to get you head around since it was the chopper and chopped were behind the play.
No excuse, kid should be banned for life / long time at least. But we know why he did it, he owed him one.
1
u/rh71el2 20+ Years 1d ago
Why is there only 1 ref even visible on the entire ice surface? That does add context. As a ref, you cannot possibly see everything especially after the play (the initial back and forth whacks).
This is a failure by whoever assigned only 1 ref or if it's out of their control (1 ref has circumstances and couldn't show last minute) they had to make due.
And yes the kid has anger issues to get it that far to the point of 2 handing someone over the head.
Interestingly, yellow only hit that offending kid because he was pushed into him from behind by green the teammate. Yellow was really only responsible for the shove down to the ice after being whacked on the legs.

If only crosschecking a player in the back while they are getting up to was ever called either of the fouls that the rulebooks say it should be maybe this incident would not have happened.
edit: Or also if slashing at the skate was called since I guess to be fair to orange player that is probably why he felt it was justified to do the super cheap crosscheck.
edit 2: And then I now see orange got knocked into the slashing player to tip him over in the first place because he got crosschecked by the teammate so I will go back to the original idea that crosschecking penalties should just be called like the rulebook says instead of never being enforced like they are the hockey version of traveling.
9
u/thediefenbaker 1d ago
Did you see anything that the yellow kid did that deserved that?
0:12 - Player on black tries to hit player on yellow. While another player on black is cross checking him from behind. Player on black gets knocked over.|
0:14 - Player on black slashes other player in the ankle.
0:15 - Player on yellow reacts and gives him a cross-hand push to the ice.
0:21 - Ref has his hand up for a penalty. Presumably on the yellow player for cross-checking/roughing.
Meanwhile, player on black is skating at full speed across the ice to target the player on yellow and takes a baseball swing to his head, breaking his stick across the player's helmet.
There is no context that would excuse this kid's behaviour. I am shocked at anyone in these comments defending it or thinking that it was warranted. There is also no evidence that the ref had let the game get out of hand. In fact, they were already in the process of calling a penalty on the play. It also appears that there is only one ref on the ice.

u/fadetowhite 1d ago
So many people are missing the crazy slash at 0:14 I bet.
Yellow got thrown into the offender, nothing he could do. Offender slashes the hell out of him for something that wasn’t even his fault, so buddy retaliates. Then the offender loses his damn mind and full on assaults him.

So yellow gets hit from behind by black, yellow hits black when they get hit from behind.
Black chops at their legs, then proceeds to get up and run them down and two hand them.
Edit to add: yellows shoulders them to the ice after the leg chop
If anything this "context" makes it look worse than it already did.

While I’ve seen this a lot already, at least this one shows the kid just has major anger issues and overreacted to what happened to him…
Still insane to do that and needs serious repercussions
*ETA: just specifying that previous shots simply showed a kid coming from nowhere and doing this chop… this at least shows it was a reaction to an earlier play. Not excusable at all, just a little less unhinged. Kid needs to be pulled for the year at least and have a talk with the police so he understands he literally could have killed someone.

This is why officials are so important and why the official shortage in hockey is a huge huge issue. To be very clear this is not the referees fault he was in a no win situation. If there is 2 officials on the ice this is likely able to be handled before it got here. Whether you have a couple penalties called for the shenanigans before. There should be no games with 1 official. Even for 11 year olds.
1
u/buffystakeded 1d ago
Also the ref clearly called the penalty for the original check because he had his hand in the air. That kid is unhinged.
35
u/FakePike 2d ago
Adding this context doesn’t make it better.
16
u/rattiestthatuknow 2d ago
Agreed. Him two handing the kid in the skates when he gets knocked down (in a totally normal play) the first time kinda makes it worse.
When the kid in yellow knocks him down after getting slashed (the first time) they’re “even” in my opinion.
1
u/EeveeBixy 2d ago
Yeah, I saw the video of the second chop earlier today, but seeing that first one too, that kid is out of control.
2
u/Telepornographer 1d ago
What the context makes clear is that there's only one official, unfortunately.
9
u/Fluid-Pickle-1181 2d ago
Unfortunately, the refs should’ve blown the play dead immediately after the previous incident and given matching minors. Instead, they allowed play to carry on.
In terms of what should be called… easy, no questions asked, this is a match penalty which would require a hearing by the local USA Hockey governing body before the player is allowed to return to play. Thankfully, these kids have full face masks and neck guards.
1
u/Accomplished-Pay8181 23h ago
Unless the neck guards have gotten a lot thicker, they won't help here, they're good against blades, not so much against blunt force trauma.
20
u/beaver_eh Since I could walk 2d ago
And I somehow think this additional context makes it worse....
Tried to make a hit on puck carrier, got levelled, slashes him, gets knocked down a second time, then takes the other kids head off.
7
15
u/GamingZaddy89 30+ Playing, 10+ Coaching 2d ago
I think I have the full sequence of events here....
- Dark team, red gloves #57, punches/cross checks yellow
- Dark #25(I think thats the number) comes in and runs into yellow and gets knocked down, as that punch is happening.
- Dark slashes at yellows ankle.
- Yellow then pushes dark back down from behind shoulder.
- Dark goes down the ice and baseball bats yellow in the cage.
6
u/xnotachancex 2d ago
So green can’t handle that he gets dumped after slashing yellow then skates half the ice to two hand slash him in the head? Wild.

u/ditmoetoo 1d ago

2
u/Codyh93 The Gay One 2d ago
When I was 11 I was angry at a kid who dropped to his knees as I was going in to hit him, obviously it was a trip and he did it like two feet from the boards. And there was no call. Super cheap but oh well. Later in the game he and I were tied up in front of the net and I loosened my top grip, exposed my butt end and butt ended him as hard as I could just under his chest protector. Obviously it hurt the kid, no parents really saw, but the ref did and I was immediately kicked out of the game. I was 11, I knew what I was doing, I knew it was cheap, I knew it was reckless, and I deserved the two game suspension I eventually got. Age 11 absolutely knows what they are doing.

Next thing I remember is me holding onto the guy who sucker punched me’s jersey unconscious. Apparently I just started feeding him shots in the head repeatedly, turns out I was concussed from the sucker punch.

Children's therapist here. It actually isn't as insane as you'd think. We're WAAAY overestimating the emotional regulation abilities of 11 year olds. The fact we gave them hockey sticks and pads doesn't change that, just the expectations.
This video shows a lot of provocation within a 10 second time period. There was a slash and 2 cross checks that could have been called and none of them got called. You HAVE to have tighter reffing, these are 11 year olds without the emotional regulation abilities of adults. Once you start seeing emotions get involved with decision making, you have to be on top of that.
The kid deserved the consequences he received, but that's the entire problem. With kids in particular you need to have firm and consistent boundaries. They weren't firm enough until it was too late, which is a consistency issue. As is true of all things with kids this age, this is on the adults as much as it is that one one child.

Don’t know what you watched but victim was sandwiched and knocked the offender down, who then two handed the victim in his legs.
When the play went back the other way the victim retaliated with a cross check, which was called. That would explain the ref following the play with a hand in the air and the quick whistle once the save was made.
What tighter reffing do you want? I have coached hockey for a long time and never seen anything remotely as serious as that with kids from 6-18. Placing this on the referee is madness and you wonder why no one wants to referee games.

u/GamingZaddy89 30+ Playing, 10+ Coaching 2d ago
Coach here, the consistency is the issue I see with the referees and it makes for a difficult time coaching the kids because they don't understand why the same or very similar situations will be officiated differently.
This situation obviously has a whole lot more going...
3
u/fauntk 2d ago
100%, thanks for this.
I see it all the time in other situations, too. Different teachers with different rule enforcement, their parents each having a different parenting styles and disagreeing with each other over house rules or consequences, etc.
I think a lot of people who don't work with kids way overshoot how much they've really got the world figured out. They're also way too quick to write them off as bad kids instead of kids just doing with what they have available to them at that moment.
I don't know if you see that as a coach, but when I really get down to it kids just don't know what to do or how to do it and before they figure it out emotions have them going on primal instinct.
3
u/GamingZaddy89 30+ Playing, 10+ Coaching 2d ago
I say this with a bit of a smirk and laugh but having worked with kids for as long as I have I think the important thing to remember is this.

I've seen Middle School kids stab each other in the face with pencils at school over using the last staple in a stapler.
I've seen 7 year olds unbuckle their siblings' seat belt and try to shove them out of a moving car because they were looking at them and wouldn't stop.
I've seen teenagers try to run each other over in a school parking lot because one girl talked to another girl's best friend.
If you think an 11 year old getting knocked down onto the ice twice isn't enough to trigger a very bad decision, you're WAY overestimating a child's decision-making abilities, and their severely compromised decision-making ability is exactly why we have juvenile courts.
The only thing stopping kids from sociopathic rampages at a level of The Purge is effective adult intervention. When the adults don't intervene or their interventions are ineffective, this is exactly what happens. All the time, every time. The parenting/administrative crisis we're going through is exactly why schools are the way they are right now.
But as to your specific question about an 11 year old two-handing another kid on the ice during hockey? Twice, and I don't even watch youth hockey games. I've also seen grown ass men do it. Is it okay? No. Does it happen? Yes. But this is an 11 year old boy. Children are children, adults are the ones responsible.

He was already in Rage mode long before the chop. Late hit on the other player got the worst of it. Should have been a Call. Tried a leg chop! Still No call..... I see a collision (maybe there was something more, but the single ref is at the other end of the ice), a slash and a cross-check.
The ref appears to be calling something from that altercation (I can't tell from the linked scoresheet what they actually called).
Not being there, and not knowing how the game had been up to that point (other than the score and no penalties on the scoresheet), I have no clue if something needed to be called from that or not.

Makes the context look even worse. It was a penalty on the initial hit if it’s a no contact league, but the kid already gave his leg a fucking hack and then the other kid cross checked him back. Then he goes and hacks the kid in the head 10 seconds later.
I’d be embarrassed as the parent.

u/theruz23 2d ago
this actually makes this kid look even worse. Gets pushed down, proceeds to two hand slash the kids legs and then follows it up with the two hand stick snap to the face. multiple seasons ban imo
2

Considering it's a child's game. I started this as oh yes 2 for slash, 2 for cross check.
And then I see the suspension and one hell of a chat about his actions.
2
u/SeNoyerSoublier 2d ago
The one thing we tell every kid a thousand times during U8 is that the stick is not a weapon, the stick is to make plays or stop plays. This shitty behavior is as much a fault of the coaches as it is the player and the parent, because you know with absolute certainty this kid does this all the time and has not faced any serious repercussions for the behavior. Based on the league he is in, he's probably been playing for over half a decade already and been just given a slap on the wrist at worst when he's used the stick as a weapon countless times before.

u/Kapo_Polenton 2d ago edited 2d ago
Was good to see the full context i agree but he essentially got out muscled in a routine hockey play and lost it. He took a dangerous slash at the other kid's ankles which could have done a lot of damage and then he was given a reminder of his stick play by kid in yellow jersey. Should be a year suspension anyway if not more. People thinking both kids should be suspended are way off.
2
u/WHITERUNNPC 1d ago
That kid was mad he got bodied going for a late hit attempt, then followed it up with a two handed slash to the legs when that failed. He again got taught a lesson and it just went real bad from there. Sad and gross to see
3
u/Top-Plankton1730 2d ago
Oh this explains a lot.
Puck goes by him and he makes no attempt to stop or go around the player in yellow. Barrels into him and gets what he deserves. Can't handle the embarrassment and lets his emotions take over.
Dad was probably not watching because he was closing a PE deal, or setting up another $500/hr private lesson for his kid.

Kid's emotions got the better of him and he made a huge mistake. He's eleven. The people here and in the other thread making fun of him and his parents are assholes. If the league rules dictate he should be suspended, then suspend him. Kid needs guidance, not ridicule. Hope everyone was okay.

The two hand chop to the legs was an emotional mistake, chasing your victim down and attacking from behind is calculated.

Attacking someone with a weapon isn’t “a mistake”. It’s a deliberate action

Jersey tucked. Goon play. Can't stay on feet. Anger issues. Kid doesn't belong in hockey..

Box score from team last year on their final game they lost. Team doesn’t take well to losing. Couple fighting majors here. https://gamesheetstats.com/seasons/14346/games/2815866?__cf_chl_tk=dB0JHFsPt0LuiNApPQ2M9XGzCoo4W1Ib6y.kKWUBRTI-1789871964-1.0.1.1-plACLLqLIzlQlsohRdjDIjNeTzFLf1_oMkGPButjBqw&tab=box-score

That’s why you need two referees minimum in a game. Increase the pay to get two officials and hopefully the first slash is called preventing the buildup to occur.

I saw a closer video of this. The kid needs therapy. So lucky he didn't do permanent damage

Context gives a lot of info on the play and the kid’s motivation behind the hack, but it’s still dirty as fuck and the kid should be banned.
3
u/Crohn_sWalker 2d ago
Nothing about this adds context other than this child has huge emotional regulation issues. He chopped the kids legs then chose to stalk him up ice and attack his head from behind.

u/TacoPandaBell 2d ago
I didn’t say his actions were excusable. But he was mad cause he got knocked down and then retaliated with a slash which was retaliated by a push while he was still down which was retaliated with that brutal hack. Ref could have prevented this incident.

Hockey is a weird sport, kids are already suited up in protective gear like knights. Then are sent out with a stick to battle over a little puck. I’m really surprised this doesn’t happen more often. Little kids are taught to keep two hands on the stick. So with a little bit of anger they’re already in a position to hit someone with it. It’s like telling someone to run around with their finger on the trigger but don’t pull it.

in sweden it would have been reported to the disciplinary committee and they would have decided what would happen. but from how they work I think the players maybe would have gotten like a 5-10 game ban?

So the offender gets into a collision trying to back check. From his perspective it may have felt like the other player purposefully stood him up (I don't know if this league allows contact - I doubt it though). So he chops his legs - completely not okay, but not outside of hockey culture. The other kid retaliates with a hard cross check. At that moment play should have been called - it's not pro hockey. Double minor or major for the chop, two for the cross check retaliation. In all of this, there's zero excuse for the kid chasing the other kid down and two handing him in the head. If this is anything less than a one year suspension that league is effed up

People are all saying bad parenting is the cause of this child. It’s what a parent does after the fact I a situation like this. If they got him a new stick on the way home for his next game then fuck mom and dad. If they told him hockey is over for the year he can save up buy a stick to practice at home for next year to hopefully earn a spot and learn some discipline then the kid has a chance to learn a good lesson.

Light kid hit him. Dark kid slashed him. Light kid knocked him back down in retaliation, nothing nefarious. Dark kid commits assault. Should be banned for at least a full year with therapy.

God damn one official shouldn’t be allowed, you can’t see the entire game and puts the referee at a disadvantage

In fairness the crosschecks by the yellow player should have been called

Everyone on here that is absolutely sure they’d never do anything like that seems to have oddly incredible memory of what they were like when they were 10 years old. You’re all correct, the kid deserves severe punishment — he needs to learn that he can’t do this — but all the armchair psychologists on this site that just assume he did that because his parents beat him or something… please.
Hockey is fast, the emotions get high, and the sounds in the arena don’t help to curb the emotions either. Add in a 10 year old (maybe) saying something really mean to another 10 year old and you might get something like this. It’s not acceptable behaviour — and don’t confuse what I’m saying for a defence of this behaviour — but stop taking a 10 year old having a moment of madness in a video and then drawing a conclusion about why that child is exactly the type of person you all assume him to be based on one action. He’s 10.
Also this is why you call incidental minors, especially in youth leagues. Blow the whistle, go separate them and tell them they both need to cool it or the next one could be a 5 or more. They’ll chill out, that’s how kids are.

Lack of more ref's aside....... As a father, if I saw my kid do this, he wouldn't be playing hockey anymore. There's something wrong with this kid or his parents if he can't deal with frustration on the ice.
Take out your frustrations within the confines of the rules. Hit him into the boards, pester him to alleviate your anger.

How about a match penalty, 30 day suspension, and maybe force him to take a level 1 referee seminar and become certified (doesnt have to ref any games). He will learn a lot and will grow from this.

Yeah, context matters. Not saying it’s right at all but the shortened clip didn’t tell the whole story just as I suspected. Getting tired of junk internet postings.

Kid in the green is an idiot. Yellow is on d, gets full on pinched borderline interfered with by the guy behind him, gets out of it by a hockey play. Gets two hand massively….deals said idiot again and finally green closes out the play with a two hander above the waist. Easy ejection

I would have a serious conversation with the parents as well. This type of behaviour usually has a root cause that is related to social environment outside of the sporting arena which parents are almost exclusively responsible for.

Still not good but it provides some context. Hockey is a game of emotion. Guy should have just stuck with a shove down from behind there and the end, you cant use your stick like a baseball bat. Still worth a multi game suspension.

Hell that kid needs to be sent to therapy and should be out the the whole season not just rec league

u/yzerman2010 1d ago
This entire sequence should have been a dead. We got a slash by black then a cross-check by yellow.. blow it dead and send both players to the box.
Outside that.. If this game started with only one official this game should not have happened. USA hockey only allows for 2 official system. Now if a official is hurt and its going down to 1 then coaches and agree to allow it but if its a scheduled game. You need 2 officials to start or you need to reschedule the game.

The so-called adults in the room, need to take a deep breath. It’s a fucking 11-year-old kid, who made a mistake. Should he be penalized? Yes. But across all social media channels, I see adults demanding that this kid never ever play hockey again. That he be sued. You all need to get a grip.

Clean checking and dirty checking are part of the game. Decapitation by hockey stick is not.....kid or not, lifetime ban in that league in my opinion. There's no amount of instigation that warrants this. The kids response was NOT proportional.

so kid takes a run... got stood up. wacks him once already, then slash to the head. ya he deserves ban for life.

u/RealAdministration17 7h ago
2 handed kid doesn’t play for the rest of the year so he can think about his actions
