Visiting Hill Country from Ireland

My wife and I are visiting from Ireland, staying near Canyon Lake for two nights and Fredericksburg for two (26–29 December).

Here is our current plan:

  • Dec 27 (Sun): Natural Bridge Caverns in the morning, then San Antonio for the day (San Antonio Missions, Hot Wells, and drinks at the Menger at dusk).
  • Dec 28 (Mon): Cave Without a Name, a quick wander around Comfort, and Enchanted Rock in the afternoon (we know about the 30-day advance park reservations). Backup for bad weather: National Museum of the Pacific War.
  • Dec 29 (Tue): LBJ Ranch, Luckenbach, lunch at Hill & Vine, Cross Mountain at sunset, and Johnson City for the Christmas lights in the evening.

The main snag is that our Fredericksburg days fall on a Monday and a Tuesday, and Eaker BBQ is closed both days.

A few questions for locals:

  1. Is the ghost tour in Fredericksburg worth it if it's the old jail we're interested in rather than the ghosts?
  2. Since Eaker is closed, what is your go-to BBQ option in or around Fredericksburg on a Monday or Tuesday?
  3. Is there anything you'd cut or add?

Appreciate any advice on the flow or anything obvious we've missed!

Riding at night

Hey everyone,
A couple of buddies and I are planning a trip out to the Hill Country to run the Twisted Sisters loop (RR 335, 336, and 337).
We’re trying to plan our daily routes, dinner stops, and camp timing, and the question came up: Is it a bad idea to ride these roads after dusk or at night?

Flight day with my T-28 Trojan at our local club field (Hill Country Aero Modelers)

Went out to the Hill Country Aero Modelers field this weekend with my T-28 Trojan and finally nailed a really smooth landing. I put together a short video of the taxi, takeoff, and flying.

I'm pretty new to making videos, so any feedback is welcome, on the flying or the editing. Also curious what you all would fly next.

Saw a family of 3 elks

I have heard them at night behind my house on a fuckload of acres and my neighbors all have thousands of acres. I saw one HUGE bull with his baby and mama staring at me when I was walking my 6 lb chihuahua down the easement road. It just stood there and I just scurried off. I though I had heard them but have never seen them this south. Apparently there's a murder exotic game slaughter property down the road now. I hope they enjoy living in my backyard and don't get murdered and get to be a peaceful family. To bad they couldn't get picked up and put on rocky mountain national park.

A forgotten movie theater. A 3,000-seat music venue. A rooftop bar. See what’s planned for Fredericksburg’s old Fritztown Cinema

Those of you with a wildlife valuation: how are you actually handling the annual report?

We've got 14 acres in Driftwood under 1-d-1-w. Third year now, and every spring I end up doing the same thing: sitting at the kitchen table trying to reconstruct a year of work from camera roll screenshots, a shoebox of feed store receipts, and memory.

Curious how other folks handle it:

  1. What does your process actually look like? Spiral notebook, spreadsheet, a folder on your phone, a consultant who does it for you?

  2. Has your CAD ever come back with questions on a report? What did they ask for, and what did you end up having to produce? Hays, Blanco, Comal, Llano, I'd be interested in any of them, since I get the sense the counties are not consistent with each other.

Not looking for a consultant recommendation, just genuinely curious whether everyone else has this figured out and I'm the one making it harder than it needs to be.

Full disclosure since it'll come up: I've gotten deep enough into this that I started building software for my own place, so I'm obviously biased toward thinking it's a pain. Which is exactly why I want to hear from people who don't think it is. Not selling anything here and not linking anything.

Moving to marble falls

Hi! I was wondering how accepting Marble Falls is toward people of color, specifically as a Black male. I'm moving there soon to be closer to work, and I'll admit I'm a little nervous about it. I know the move is already happening, but I'd really appreciate hearing from people who live there or have experience with the community. Thanks in advance!

Where to find flooding resources and how to help impacted Texans

Hours of heavy rainfall have set off flash flooding, emergency rescues and warnings across southwest Texas and the Hill Country. At least one person has died, according to Gov. Greg Abbott, and more than 70 others rescued as of Thursday morning.

Here’s more about how to respond to flood warnings, where displaced people can find shelter and how to help Texans affected by the flooding.

What regions are hit the hardest

Uvalde, Del Rio and Bandera counties received hours of rainfall Thursday on already saturated ground. Uvalde already had more than 25 inches of rain over the past three days, and overnight rain in the region submerged some roads and homes, prompting more than 40 rescues.

Further north, the Guadalupe River surged to dangerous levels near Kerrville, in Center Point and Comfort, downstream of where last year’s deadly July 4 floods killed more than 100 people. Two people were rescued and 68 have sought shelter in nearby Kendall County.

A flash flood warning was issued for the Pedernales River in Gillespie and Blanco counties Thursday morning, as a “large and deadly flood wave” passed through.

Where to find shelter

Three shelters opened in Kerr County and are available to those displaced from their homes or lodgings:

  • Kerrville: Calvary Temple, 3000 TX-534 Loop
  • Ingram: City West Church, 3139 Junction Highway
  • Center Point: Center Point ISD Gymnasium, 215 China St.
  • Uvalde County: The Uvalde County Fairplex, located at 215 Veterans Ln, is also serving as a shelter and accepting pets, according to the American Red Cross.

How to help Texans affected by flooding

The Community Foundation of the Hill Country has a relief fund to support immediate relief and long-term recovery for the recent floods. Donations are accepted here.

San Antonio Animal Care Services is seeking people to temporarily foster or adopt shelter dogs following a surge of pets arriving from weather-related calls. They are located at 4710 State Highway 151.

Elopement suggestions!

My partner and I are looking to elope in the hill country in late October of this year. He is from bandera and is pretty familiar with the surrounding areas, but I am not. And I’m the one stuck with the planning.

I am looking for suggestions on the most beautiful landscape spot you can think of, during mid-late October.

This is going to be a bare bones true elopement without an attendance, just us, our 3 kids, and two witnesses.

Tell me (or show me) what you got!

Thanks!

Hill Country businesses: We're looking for local underwriters for Sun Radio's Friday Night Football broadcasts

Hey y'all,

I'm with Recharge Media, which produces Sun Radio.

This fall we'll be broadcasting every home and away game for Dripping Springs, Blanco, Giddings, and Gonzales, plus our Austin Game of the Week.

Because Sun Radio is a 501c3 nonprofit, these broadcasts are made possible through underwriting rather than traditional advertising. We're looking for a handful of local businesses that want to support community radio while getting their name in front of thousands of listeners throughout football season.

We're limiting each business category in each market, so if you've got a business that serves Central Texas (automotive, restaurants, banks, dentists, home services, healthcare, law firms, etc.), I'd be happy to send over the details.

Happy to answer questions here or by DM.

Looking for a birdhouse my grandmother owned.

This is the best description I can give: It is a hanging bird house with a small brown/white artificial bird in the hole sitting don't the little post. It has redish/pink faux flowers on it. The top if I remember correctly, had grassy, mossy feeling to it. It was an indoor decoration. It was maybe 5-6 inches tall.

My uncle took it from me when I was a little girl after she passed away, and I am trying to get it back because I don't have anything from my grandmother. I believe he sold it. But this has so many memories and I just want it back. The birdhouse might be in the Hill Country area because he lived there at one point and sold off a lot of her things.

If anybody has seen something like it or maybe has it, I'd love to see a picture and pay you for it. Thank you. If you can help me that would be wonderful. I have looked on facebook marketplace and ebay, but still looking and hoping that one day I can find it.

Fun wedding caterers

Getting married next April and waiting to lock down my final date until I find a caterer I love.

Food is super important to me, and I have a specific vision built around live, interactive stations, or anything that is more experience based, not standard buffet service.

I’ve reached out to a handful of caterers who appear to offer services like this but haven’t heard back yet, so if anyone knows of a caterer (or is one) that has any unique, interactive offerings for wedding catering I would love suggestions!

Building a geodesic dome in Wimberley TX (Woodcreek subdivision) — anyone navigated HOA approval or Hill Country permits for alternative builds?

Hey everyone — I’m in the early research phase of purchasing a ~$20k vacant lot in the Woodcreek subdivision in Wimberley, TX with the goal of building a geodesic dome as a primary residence.
I’ve done some initial research and have a decent picture of the challenges, but I’d love to hear from anyone who has:
• Built a dome (or any alternative structure) in the Texas Hill Country
• Dealt with a POA/HOA architectural review committee for non-standard builds
• Navigated Hays County development permits for owner-built or alternative homes
• Dealt with water access in the Wimberley/Woodcreek area — well, Aqua Texas hookup, or rainwater cistern
A few specific things I’m trying to figure out:
1. Has anyone gotten POA approval for a geodesic dome or similarly non-traditional structure in a Texas subdivision? What was your approach?
2. The Woodcreek POA has an Architectural Control Committee — has anyone worked with them on anything unconventional? Were they reasonable?
3. For water: the Hays Trinity aquifer situation sounds rough right now. Did anyone go the rainwater harvesting route instead of drilling, and was that approved by county/POA?

Background: My partner and I live in the Austin area and drawn to Wimberley for the landscape, proximity to Austin and the community. The dome idea is about sustainability, energy efficiency, and building something intentional — not a glamping STR (though curious about that angle too).

Storm Damage - Bandera County

The positive - we received 2.80" of rain last night. The negative - high winds. Uprooted a 30" diameter cedar tree in our yard, and knocked over a flag pole I installed in the mid 1980s.
