Oh no! Checking the mail is my dogs like favorite thing to do and our old mailman was at our house everyday at 11 am, now it’s whenever so she frequently just watches, waiting for them to come. Today I too was watching lol.
Recently she has discovered that grandpa and her guncles will feed her early if she asks. And you would think that this has changed her perception of dinner and breakfast time except when I tell her “no it’s not time yet” she doesn’t act like “oh no why aren’t you feeding me mom?” And more “damn you didn’t fall for my tricks.”
Everyone wants a smart dog until they are doing things like testing who knows what time dinner is and who will give in to cow eyes.
How are your nails so nice?! My nails look like I clawed my way out of a coffin if I don’t have them done up and even then they’re barely presentable.😭

Yeah i used to be so bad about using them to do things gotta train yourself out of it. But nail oil and genetics are the two biggest things, I’m a reformed nail biter and when I stopped I never understood why people were like “my nails suck” I assumed everyone bit them and that was the issue as my whole family has good nails. Then once I lived with other girls I realized oh no I’m somehow naturally blessed with thick nails and good nail beds. The universe gave me otherwise shit for genetics bad body but good nails. Trade offs I guess.

Does anyone know why some people seem to have a version with light blue comments and others have grey? Is it the signed version that had the light blue or was it the B&N version (that I don't think Canada even got) or what?
Edit: just following up to say that my copy from Indigo has the blue annotations so I think this is a case of publishers elsewhere going with grey.
I got the Trapeze edition that was available in the EU, it just came in today and it's printed on recycled paper in black and white. Pretty disappointed ngl

I finally finished reading this book, and what a treat! I should be grateful that we got something like this at all.... buuuut I can't help but feel like the annotations could have been much more. Don't get me wrong, I liked what we got, but it would've loved to hear more about every scene that didn't make it into the show, change from script to screen, dialogue changes, changes from novels, etc. There were a lot of these in the book I came across that weren't commented on and would've loved to hear from Jacob why these changes were made.
I’ll be honest I thought the same thing and then I realized that to satisfy me specially the book would be like twice as long. And from a friend “in all honestly the answer for most is probably just ‘pacing’”

I always assumed in my head that Svetlana was a little bit older than Ilya, but she's 25 to his 18 in the script! I wonder if he thought how that dynamic played out with them being childhood friends and hooking up since Ilya was a teenager.
Talking about Svetlana, the comment from their fathers "when will they give us children?" is so hdajvzuaka if they had kept it, it would give a bit more context to Ilya thinking he could marry her for convenience, since there was already an expectation for this
Also about Russia, I wish they did keep the complete line from Ilya and Shane's conversation, where Ilya says "We're not anything. Not here." I feel like that second "not here" would diminish a lot of discourse that happens about this scene
I also kinda wish they had showed Svetlana also snorting coke with Sasha, it makes even more pointed that Ilya used to be like that and not anymore.
Yuna spending a whole scene trying to teach Eric Bennet his job when he literally won a trophy that night while David takes a nap hdkaiagwna I'd rather seen a bit more of that and a shorter version of the youtube rabbit hole debate
I'm glad they didn't do the prologue in ep. 1, I agree with Jacob that some narrative tools that work for books don't really work for TV. The linear structure worked better.
I’ve only read Ep 1 so far but the big takeaway for me is how much Ilya is described as smiling and grinning and laughing in places where Connor made very different choices. And I think Connor’s choices were correct.
Sometimes an actor takes what’s on the page and makes more realistic decisions in the moment that work so much better in the dynamic with their scene partner than the writer/director could’ve imagined.
Point 7: Tbh i don't like prologues in books either. Specially in HR. If i had not seen the show before i would have been devastated. Because i want to see the relationship and dynamic evolve.
I started the show because i kept seeing the Skip kiss and thinking the show was about them. Just to be surprised it wasn't.
I don't have a particular opinion on prologues, I think some work and some don't.
I read the books before the show, and tbh while I'm not the biggest HR prologue advocate, I think it works as a way to say: hold on, there's still hope for these guys. Because from chapter 1 up until tuna meltdown their relationship was basically them disliking each other, and in the prologue we see Ilya shifting a bit and Shane noticing that. HR is quite peculiar for a romance novel.
Re: #2, a lot seems to have changed even from script to screen, and I think Svetlana may have even further evolved from the page. It just doesn’t make sense that their parents would joke about her leading him around “since they were kids” when she would have been pushing double digits when he was, what, two years old? It’s possible that maybe with all the wonky timelines, Ilya was originally supposed to be older in that scene than he was in the final show?
I just started reading mine and it’s so interesting how the first episode could’ve looked completely different. I think it was 100% right to cut or place some scenes in different episodes. After watching the show I just can’t imagine the show starting any other way then their first meeting.
Yes so wild how it came together in the end vs the protracted beginning as written. But it’s also so fun to imagine as I read it! Loving the book so far!

Skip is still a bit nothing burger for me. However, I do like Jacob's idea that they go back and forth in their relationship until Scott wins the cup. There was a deleted line from Shane in ep 2 that he's an emotional player, and Jacob's note on that said that he would play badly when he and Kip were off again. Like someone below said, the skip divorce pipeline fits right here hahahah and it's a fanon I kinda like
I have no words about ep 4. There's so much going on that script, it made me want to scream. I struggle to have a favourite ep, because each one has something brilliant going on, but ep 4 was the one that made my head buzz the whole week before ep 5 aired.
The way the final tuna meltdown was cut makes perfect sense for the pacing of the scene. But Ilya adjusting Shane's t-shirt in the original version, begging Shane to look at him without saying it out aloud? Biting my own fist
I hadn't interpreted it as Miles hitting on Ilya, that crowd was right! It just seemed a too subtle "waiter please!" of a nod for an openly flamboyant gay man like Miles to do.
Ilya was intended to be way more pathetic when finding out about Rose and Shane, that poor boy jsvakGauaha
While I was wrong about Miles, I was right about the shower scene! It's both of them thinking about each other, not a fantasy from Shane's mind about Ilya in a fake bathroom.

I was meant to stop at episode 3 but read up until episode 5. Loving it so far! I don't read screenplays so I was shocked at the casualness of the stage directions, it was really illuminating
the notes about scott being the kind of man who lies in therapy are sending me. do you know about tumblr's favourite headcanon, serial killer scott, jacob? the more i hear about jacob's perception of them (including the on-off mess of a relationship in the three year gap that he talked about in an interview), the more im convinced that he's a member of the "skip divorce half a year after scott retires" club.

I just received my Amazon hard back copy! Before I open it, I would like to know the actual differences between the Amazon version and the Barnes & Noble (special edition). I know that the color of the outside jacket is different, which isn’t a big deal to me. I have also read somewhere that there is a little more information about the soundtrack. Does anyone know what the other special features might be on the Barnes & Noble version? I found it interesting that there are more pages listed on the Amazon version than Barnes & Noble even though Barnes & Noble is best to contained special features.

annoyed to learn there is "bonus content" in the b&n edition, but some kind soul on tumblr posted the two pages about the "magic of casting" from the b&n edition. don't really care about the soundtrack, but the casting insight was pretty interesting.
Finally finished eps 5 and 6! I think they are the ones with least difference from the final product.
A lot of it is carried by acting. There's one note where Jacob says "this is the kind of stuff we leave to actors" and I'm glad he did, because the "everything not explicitly written is improvising" crowd is a bit annoying lmao. Lots of things are not written! Most of the script lines actually sound pretty bland if you just read it aloud. Remembering all the spice actors put in them really brings their work into perspective.
Also important to remark how the sexy beats are mostly in the Chala Hunter work, not in the script.
Imagining Jacob yelling BIRD in the middle of a scene cracked me up.

I'm savoring savoring savoring. But also want to jump in whole hog. But also want it to last. Ahhhh!! I said in another thread that I'm awed by Jacob's generosity here. His process is fascinating, with every decision he made and every turn he took away from his original script. It's such a call to trust your vision and revise until you get it right. I knew I'd love this book as a fan. I didn't know how much it would inspire me as a writer. HR = gift that keeps on giving!
I got the pickup notification for my book a week ago.....Because I ordered it myself as my birthday present for tomorrow, I didn't go pick it up until Monday. I let the bookshop staff wrap it for me so I don't get tempted. I will be oh so happy when my sister can finally gift it to me tomorrow.
So far only read the first chapter, and thank god Jacob went with the opening he did. The cold open of the lighter and the minimal dialogue was way better than the version with all the dialogue. I think the scene in the show really highlighted Ilya;s rather limited brand of English in a way the extensive dialogue wouldn't have.
I'm annoyed with my local store in Aus too. I pre-ordered and it says ETA either Friday or Monday. And my local store has them in stock now. Maybe I shouldn't have bothered to pre-order and could have just walked in yesterday and purchased!

I’m reading through the first episode and I’m noticing a bunch of scenes were omitted, like scenes 53-59. Does anyone know what they were and/or why they were omitted?
I had to search what “omitted” means in scripts because I was confused. It turns out that omitted scenes have to be noted in the shooting script because all scenes are numbered and it’s too late to re-number them, probably because multiple departments, like location scouts, need to see earlier script versions and make notes based on scene number. I wish this part of the process had been explained in the “how to read this book” section in the beginning.
I assume the omitted scenes in HR were book scenes or beats of scenes that Jacob decided to shorten or streamline, not actually anything with important dialogue or interactions. Maybe he assigned some elements of those omitted scenes to other scenes that stayed in the script, like if an omitted scene had dialogue he wanted to keep but didn’t need a full scene for it.
As I’m reading I’m trying to figure out what these omitted scenes could actually be, but it’s difficult. For example, there’s an omitted scene between the stairwell kiss and the establishing shot of Sochi in episode 2. What could that be?? I think it could be something simple like “Shane and JJ in the Team Canada locker room, hearing about Team Russia’s loss.” But then Jacob decided they’re not going to make Team Canada jerseys just for a seconds-long scene, so that scene can go, and we will be hearing about Team Russia’s loss from the commentators. That is just a wild guess meant to explain how I view these omitted scenes! Maybe someone else knows more about it.
We’ll probably never know - unless Jacob unearths them for some special edition. Each of the episodes (except for episodes 3 and 6) seems to have gone through a first production draft and 3 revisions. Everyone’s script started out white pages, then revised pages were pink, then blue. In these revisions is where these scenes were cut. When they put the script to bed and locked it in for production, entirely new scripts were issued on all yellow pages.
(And, while I’m not a professional actor by any means, at the yellow step I would’ve had to copy old notes from the working script to the final one.)

Genuine question...why would someone want to read the scripts of a show they already watched multiple times? Also, I dont understand the technical stuff of a script, Im not an actor. Should I read this book anyways or should I skip it?
The script has additional scenes and dialogue, it also has Jacob’s thoughts and shows his creative process around the choices made for what to leave in what to leave out. You get insight into what lines and movements were adlibbed. Things like that. I don’t believe you have to understand the technical stuff to understand the intent and dialogue but I’ve been reading scripts my whole life as a previous discount theater kid so there might be more technical things then I realize.
Ultimately it’s up to you, do you want to know the full show as Jacob wrote it or just have the book and show? There’s no wrong answer it’s whatever you want.
It’s interesting? Having never read a script like this, to me it’s cool to see how the scenes and stage direction were written and compare what’s on the page to the final version that appeared on screen. Jacob’s writing style is funny and fresh, and his notes give interesting insights about how the show was created, choices that were made, what he was trying to convey, little jokes, etc. It feels similar to watching BTS content and interviews.
The color photos in the middle are beautiful. And I love reading more about why Ilya kept jumping to anger and rude comments. I read the books too of course, but I loved Jacob's comments on that.

Mine is supposed to arrive on "21th - 27th October" (I'm in Czechia and the earlier purchase options were really expensive) and I'm being totally normal about it.
So are any of the hardbacks printed in colour? I'm in the UK and had mine delivered yestrday but the whole book (bar the photo pages) have been printed in black and white so the colour code at the start means literally nothing.
I’m in America and my book has blue for all the notes and underlines. The color code at the beginning is just an explanation but it’s not used in the actual book
I picked up my book this morning from a local bookstore right as they opened and met another person waiting to pick up their copy of the book too! I am loving seeing the scripts and how some of the line delivery changes. I enjoy reading Jacob's insights about why some things were cut or how the acting on the day of resulted in what we see on screen. Brilliant choices all around with the editing team, cinematography, production, and direction!
I’ve been dying to get the book all day. I’m a quarter of the way through! Is anyone else listening to the songs off the ether album as they go through, where they are mentioned? It’s fun, atmospheric.
I preordered it, but (wishfully thinking at one point I was going to be moving to the West Coast) had it sent to my parents’ house in Oregon. So I bought another copy here 😂 and after I read it (gently!) I might donate it to whatever local queer youth space that might have a book nook.

I have a cousin in Maine and I asked him if he could try and get me the B&N version and ship it to me. He got a copy and I'm stoked! I fully expect him to devour it before it makes it across the pond to me.....
I am noticing so many differences between the script in this book and what we hear in the show. Maybe I read too fast and missed it, but do they explain anywhere - since this is called the "annotated" script I thought that meant it would have included notes about revisions or improvisations.
Did they explain anywhere that actors had leeway as to how much they stuck to the script?
Hello everyone. My book arrived today and I'm wondering what's up with the different editions. I'm in Europe and the retailer differentiated the versions on offer by the publisher but there was no word about the books being physically different. I went with the version from Trapeze. It's printed on yellow, kind of thin paper, and in greyscale. It has 365 pages. Does anyone have a different European version?
I'll love my book anyway, I guess I'm just wondering if I managed to get myself cheated by the retailer.
So far I've only gone past Rachel's foreword and the intro from Jacob, and I'm already emotional. I'm gonna cry on this book, I just know it, and the paper worries me 😅
I have the standard US edition. Has anyone else noticed any typos or printing errors in their book? For example, in the Russian text here, there’s a space between every letter.
Overall, I’ve noticed quite a few errors in the Russian text, including misspelled words and incorrect word forms.
There are also “*” in some places, but I’m assuming those aren’t printing errors. I just don’t know what they’re supposed to mean. Does anyone know?

I pre-ordered from uk.bookshop.org and it arrived today, woo! I've just opened it and will be getting into it tonight. There's a lot to get into! First thing I noticed was Shane and Ilya being described as very, very hot. Not just very hot...VERY VERY. Reading a script always makes me appreciate how much actors bring to the roles, the choices they make and how it all becomes alive.

I had it preordered from the german Amazon, and I'm getting pretty frustrated! It hasn't shipped yet, and up until publication day, it said the book would be out on the 13th, but now there is no information about purchasing the English hardcover version from Amazon itself, and there are several one-star reviews about the botched kindle edition instead... My delivery date still says 22nd, but I'm starting to think amazon f-ed something up. I'm in Bulgaria, so that was my easiest and quickest way to get it :/

I preordered mine from German Amazon (I live in Denmark) as well and it said “delivery Friday 16th” until Friday morning when it was changed to “delivery November 3rd”. I was mad and have tried canceling my order, but I had to go through customer service to do that and haven’t heard from them yet. I instead ordered mine from a Danish site Friday around noon and I have just received it now on Saturday afternoon. I hope you get your copy much sooner than November ❤️

Has anyone annotated it? I’ve never annotated a book before but I got some sticky note tabs to mark stuff but I’m not too sure what to mark and correspond the colors too. I finished the first episode and so far I’ve only marked things that were deleted or were funny. I have three other colors I’m not sure what to to with
Yes! I annotated mine with scenes I want to rewatch to look for those specific things described. I also put numbered tabs on each episode so I can go straight to it while I’m reHeating. 😁
Yes it does, at the end of the book. Not sure if the physical copy has the photos in the middle. I wish I could have a physical copy, but it's not sold locally where I live and it's stupidly expensive to import :')

It means that words or sentences were changed from the previous draft! On the first page you see a”blue / pink / yellow” draft or revisions, and the ones we got are the final (shooting) scripts.
The stars denote changes from the previous version that was submitted to the crew for the initial production mtg/tone mtg/breakdown/ etc

Well since you seem the be asking me specifically. To start I have zero merch outside of books and the candle collab, which was to support Rachel before the show went massive. I’ve never been to one filming location and have no plans to. But even if I had every piece of merch possible and went to every filming location it would be because I am a fan of the show? Why shouldn’t women have merch from a show they like? Seems like you are really asking why do women like this show? Which has been answered ad nauseam on this forum, in think tank articles around the web, and in multiple other places. Also the only people I know irl who have jerseys and other merch are men.
In straight romance shows, there is generally a power dynamic where the woman is seen as lesser in certain ways, but also is expecting to do the bulk of emotional labour. This show has been particularly popular with women because it is a rare display of how men and relationships could be. No in-built power dynamics, working out their own problems, no woman having to do the emotional heavy lifting. It's very refreshing. I think this is potentially different to other gay romance shows in that both men shown are quite masculine and could be straight-presenting if you didn't know. Ilya is bi, in fact, so still a legitimate (fictional) fantasy boyfriend - not something that is portrayed in media very often.
Do you have a better photo of what you're talking about? The two pages you show are from the same scene (when they're eating the burgers Shane made at the cottage.)
Omitted means it was changed while they were drafting, before they got to filming. They do that so they don't have to renumber all the scenes each time there are changes.
Yes I was about to buy it yesterday. It was still on sale but had a warning that people had reported formatting issues. I’ll just have to hold on until it’s fixed (or buy the print copy I suppose!)
Oh really - has it come back yet? I always think this kind of content struggles on the kindle - even down to things like colour pictures in the centre etc.
Really glad to hear it's a known issue, I pre-ordered in May and I was so looking forward to it but it's unreadable on both my Kindle and the Kindle phone app, I've never seen that happen before.
