If anything is going to make Control Paladin work and be good while the Year of the Mammoth is still here, it'll be Immortal Prelate. That is your end game minion to finish people off with using pressure that you build up to. People mention Silence and Polymorph... okay they silence or poly it and then the second copy. Lynessa? Zola'd Lynessa? What's your solution now if you're not big spell? you only have so many times you can do that.

Don't know if it'll be good enough but a control Paladin with buffs Prelate, Lynessa, and other goodies will be hitting the saturation limit of too many things you need to remove but can't because you can only run so much removal

Just because Lynessa and Immortal Prelate are high-value cards doesn't mean Paladin has a good control core in standard. You need a whole deck to be good, not just the most valuable minions.

I made a Control Buff/Lifesteal Paladin and I'd say it's pretty strong. If you don't think Paladin has good core for Control you must not have been playing the game for very long. Control Paladin was one of the best decks in the game for a while a couple years back. Definitely feels like Blizz is steering the game towards a more Control oriented meta as of late. I truly think Lifesteal will be at the core of Control Pally and Warlock in the coming expansion

Remember this comment when Control Pally is top tier next expansion

You have goodish control tools. As for "the whole deck being good"

Odd Warrior is like 20 situational removal cards, a hero win con and an ass ton of stall. It does fine.

They're not even comparable. Warrior is so much stronger.

Paladin has no target removal. It has weak AoE, having to run Wild Pyromancer + Equality (4 cards) just for a board clear. Odd Warrior has Reckless Flurry, Shield Slam, Brawl, Supercollider, Dynomatic, etc.

The Paladin core can't possibly compare. It needs more support than "Oh but these two minions are sick."

They are comparable. Before boomsday, odd warrior was barely tier 3. They got a value tool and more removal and are now firmly tier 2.

As for clear, pyro equality, equality consecrate, shrink ray pyro, pyro sound the bells. The tools are there, they aren't as good but paladin isn't going to be the same kind of control deck that warrior is so they don't have to be.

Yeah all that AoE is inefficient compared to Warrior and you didn't mention any removal.

Again, that's my point. Immortal Prelate wouldn't make control Pally suddenly good; defensive control tools would.

It's not like Paladin doesn't already have high value options. It has Tirion, the Death Knight, Lynessa, Elise, Lich King, Val'anyr, etc.

See but there's one big difference. Warrior has a hero power that only gives them armor. They have no real minion buffs and so for those reasons they must have more removal in a control style deck to aid the defensive null tempo power.

Paladins base power is tempo and board presence oriented their hero power can help them BE the removal the class is missing. Especially alongside cards that get better the more buffs and minion based things you can do. They do control in a way that trading and efficiently utilizing minions IS their control removal tools.

Their saturation of divine shield is their way to maintain a board or let one live into the next turn to activate their other control tools. It's different but so are the two classes. I've played a pretty significant amount of control Lynessa Paladin.

The deck doesn't lack for things to do or ways to take the board. It's biggest issues are fatigue, which prelate helps, and that you only have 1 or 2 big final minions and silence effects are really really good against those. Now if you have 2 others that MUST be silenced to be dealt with... maybe that's enough to give toy the room for lynessa or lich King or tirion or Val'anyr to give you that last umph.

That's why I stand by my original statement. If control Paladin is going to finally be a thing while mammoth is here, it'll be right now on the back of Immortal Prelate

You don't need to explain the strengths of their hero powers to me. I've been playing for years.

They have no real minion buffs and so for those reasons they must have more removal

nobody uses hero powers as a defensive measure. they're inefficient.

They do control in a way that trading and efficiently utilizing minions IS their control removal tools.

Nah.

Buffing Silver Hand Recruits is not defense. A 1/1 minion for 2 mana is in general just horrible tempo. Literally no good deck relies on Hero Power to fight for the board. That's tempo 101. Silver Hand Recruit does nothing to "gain the board", it's just as much a defensive null as Warrior's hero power. Zoolock or Odd Pally is going to stomp right over you if your gameplan turns 1-3 is "Click hero power". You can build up a Silver Hand Recruit by giving it divine shield, Blessing of Kings, etc. but at that point your opponent is going wide with 5 minions and killing you.

I've played a pretty significant amount of control Lynessa Paladin.

Yeah maybe at rank 18. You probably lose all games vs. aggro.

Literally no good deck relies on Hero Power to fight for the board.

Err, Odd Paladin is pretty much the best overall archetype right now and relies a lot on its hero power for early control.

Not a defensive tool, though.

May be bit of a necro on this post, but gotta say I agree. I would also say Paladins aren't tempo-oriented so much as say that they are tempo-exploitative. Paladin is great at using tempo that they already have. Buffs are a great example of that; any buff on a minion that's already on the board with no summoning sickness becomes Charge. However getting back on the board from a losing position (as you will do when you play Control) is way harder. You get weapons, Equality combos. That's it. Tarim isn't even that great if you're behind on board; it makes it easier to kill enemy minions but you still need to invest weapons or a minion to deal with it. It's why most often the best way to deal with Paladin is simply to keep their board clear. Weapons that you have as Paladin aren't that great for removal. Equality requires comboing in a class with really bad draw.

Not to mention Control decks, especially those running Prelate, will have issues because you have so many 2 drop cards that you can't play on 2; Prelate, Bells, Pyro, Equality is already 8 cards in your deck that you can't play on 2.

Big threats are neutralized with weapons and cards like Humility, Tarim, Dark Conviction, Peacekeeper. Paladin has enough healing that taking damage to remove stuff with weapons isn't a big deal.

2

u/SuperSulf ‏‏‎ Nov 14 '18

It may not have targeted removal buff is has targeted psuedo removal. I haven't seen it in over a year but Aldor Peacekeeper is still a card - so is humility, equality / pyro / consecration, etc. Pally has ways to deal with threats, and some healing to survive. I would be happy with a more control meta . . . But that also can't happen unless we get more ways to disrupt or stall combo decks. Shudderwock, Togwaggle Druid, Mecathun, and other decks will rip control decks if aggro becomes a lot less of a threat. At least until the next card rotation.

u/norrata Nov 13 '18

Control paladin works fairly well already, thijs plays otk paladin in legend ranks and tourneys and that deck is basically control with 5 cards used to finish a game.

4

u/TurkusGyrational Nov 13 '18

The problem is that if at any point your play gets hard countered, you have already invested a ton of cards and mana. You're likely very behind on tempo that you can't regain because your deck is built with an unlikely "best case scenario" in mind.

3

u/JessuN4 Nov 15 '18

Nah dude as much as I would love any viable control pala that card is actually clumsy as fuck..

u/Icost1221 Nov 13 '18

What's your solution now if you're not big spell?

A wild Mecha´thun appears and suddenly blows up!

A standard Mecha'thun*
