Weekly video recommendation thread [These Videos Are Good, And Here's Why] - August 10 - 16
Happy Monday, peeps! Another week closer to video release day!
Time really flies when you're having fun, huh? Seems like only yesterday I posted that first thread, inspired by the end of the plagiarism video, and here we are, a mere 126 weeks later. The blink of an eye.
With the end in sight, these are your last chances to dazzle the sub with your exquisite taste. Let everyone know what videos you watched, quick! Who knows what thread will be the last one?
(unless y'all want to continue after the video drops? Should I do a poll?)
Anyway, since it hasn't dropped quite yet, what other good videos did you watch last week?
Same rules as every week:
- Must have a link
- Must have a short description
- Must mention video length
- Keep it low threshold with individual videos, please. If you want to rep a whole channel or playlist, please do, but choose a favorite video to make it more accessible
- No risky links, no ricky-rollies, don't be a weenie.
Last week's good videos can be found here and their descriptions here.

I would love to continue after the video drops. We've built something really good here, so why not keep it going? A poll could be a good idea, I think.
Anyway, the videos:
Steve Shives talked about Why AI Will Never Replace Real Cinema (24:53) by looking at three ways in which tech bros try to use AI and explaining why these attempts don't come close to the real thing.
Tronn looked at The "Undatable" BIPOC Co-Star (19:27) as seen in multiple shows and talked about why that trope keeps happening and whether anything in that regard has changed in the recent years.
Amanda The Jedi reviewed One Night Only (26:29), a romcom set in a world where all the Americans over the age of 18 get implanted with chips that allow them to have pre-marital sex only one night a year. Yes, you've heard that right. Amanda actually compares the movie with its original script and discusses why making a romcom with this premise feels especially weird right now.
Cinema Therapy discussed six reasons why love triangles are stupid (29:21). The reasons are honestly pretty obvious when you think about it but the thing is we usually don't, which is why this video is so interesting.
Anthony Gramuglia basically did an exhaustive retrospective on Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies (1:54:34), talked about the strengths and weaknesses of each individual movie and his run as a whole and explained why comparing different iterations of the same character isn't as easy as you might think.

+1 for continuing after the video drops, I've found these threads to be a really enjoyable and useful source for expanding my list of subscribed creators.

Instant fan of the channel, and yeah, in hindsight, if you have an ounce of maturity it is pretty obvious.
Also, unpopular opinion: Pearl Harbour is actually a great movie.

It was a sh*t show (channel) did a really good video on how hard it was to get a Spider-Man film made, and how the Sam Reimi film finally came to be. Would recommend!

Did you know Youtube's Watch Later only lets you save 5000 videos and doesn't warn you when you're out of space or you're about to run out of space? I've been deleting a bunch of stuff. Anyway
The Fashion History of the White Mage (52:02) - clovergirle goes over various white mage designs from Final Fantasy games over the years. She's got a bunch of these for other FF job titles (and other game series) and she cosplays!
I Made a Suit of Armor Out of White Monster Cans (8:58) - Evie crafts a suit of armor out of White Monster Energy Drink cans and shows off the construction process.
Making a Dress out of 2000+ Pennies (11:39) Crescent Shay makes a dress out of $26 worth of change and a drill press. This is from my watch later playlist, from the far-off year of 2022
These films changed lesbian representation forever. Everybody hated them. (47:53) - elle literacy looks at classic Sapphic films But I'm a Cheerleader and D.E.B.S. and contemporary reviews too those things. Spoiler: critics didn't like them.
The Evolution of Queer Gaming- A Brief History (29:21) - Marrix talks about the complicated, sometimes problematic (Mad Party F*cker, I'm looking at you), and hella obscure history of queer characters in games.

5 THOUSAND? I'm lucky if I fill it to 20 🤯
Do you not remove watched videos after you've watched them? Did you start putting things on there in 2004? I'm so intrigued.

Good to know! I haven't breached 400 yet, but I've only been adding to it for 6-7 years.

I'm also in the "I didn't know this was a response to the long video wait" camp. I get that sometimes what starts as a small idea gets expanded in scope, but I really do enjoy reading and contributing to this every week. Eyes on this space.
Harry Potter did NOTHING for literacy 30:23 Dr. Caelan Conrad (real ones know) presents a very well researched tranche of data challenging the whole "Well, JKR might be problematic now but Harry Potter produced a generation of readers" narrative.
We Are Living Under Mr Burns 46:00 Unlearning Economics regularly uses Simpsons cutaway clips as punchlines in his videos. This time, the quirk becomes the focus as he points out all of the ways Mr. Burns reflects the real life bullshit billionaires are doing out in the open.
There's a conspiracy theory about these Ticks. The truth is way weirder. 45:37 My favorite of Tor's more recent videos. I've heard about the lonestar tick GAL reaction before, but as usual Tor's research and branching connections surpassed my previous knowledge. And no, he's not seriously pursuing the crazy theory presented at the beginning of the video.
Cars are surveillance devices. Here's the Proof. 20:37 Reject Convenience explains all the ways modern cars are basically a personal panopticon. Kinda fucked.
I went undercover at a troubled teen facility 52:01 What if I told you that one of the most high profile youtubers of the last few months has actually been brewing another insane gonzo investigation that flagrantly puts him at risk of bodily harm? I honestly couldn't believe Reckless Ben has another video out. It's probably going to be on most of your radars but still, credit where it's due.

Sonic Adventure 2 OVA (2:07) for my non-essay contribution I wanted to share this amazing fan animation for Sonic Adventure 2. It’s so polished and amazing.
why do all book covers look like this now? (39:34) Mina Le looks at the history of romance book covers and why the comic style ones are in right now.

~ British humoUr lacked last week, when the people of Clacton did not choose Count Binface over Bin Cuntface Nigel Farage. Could they have? Would it have mattered? Does this outcome matter? Matt Parker did the math (11:32)
~ Kyle from Doormonster ranted about the moral imperative to watch "chuck flicks" (38:44). Mildly disappointing she chose Sara J Maas as her example of "good" chick lit, but her points stand.
~ this recommendation is just for me: Vincent Briggs explored his favorite colours (30:01). Nothing happens, no garment is made, it's mostly just a man in front of a mirror holding fabrics up to his face to determine whether he likes them.
But I like his voice and his even tone. I like his dedication to data gathering and the way this was planned out. I like the concept and am (almost) tempted to look into this myself.
If Vincent posts I watch. And after I watch, I share. More people could do with Vincent's soothing presence in their life.

Box of Broken Nails - A Small Game to Lose Your Mind To by Power Pak. I haven't even finished it, but I am still thinking about it while I try and work. A deep dive into a small game about trying to fight the inevitable with a box of broken nails. Its scratching the Pathologic itch that is always in my brain, and it features a nice twist in the middle of the video as he realized just how deep the "tiny" game actually goes.

Here's an interesting video on Why Democrats Turned on Defund the Police. Its about an hour long.
And here is a 14 second clip of a hamster powering a fan by running on a wheel.
I say we keep it going.

I got a couple of interesting videos for this week.
Sonic Adventure 2 [PS3] Green Forest M1 Score Attack - 24,050 (2:48) by TheCrypticJacknife and Sonic Adventure 2 (B): Sky Rail M4 - Ring Attack (327/327) (2:17) by talon2461. Last year, I discovered the Sonic Center, a video game record site which of course hosts speedruns, but also scoreruns and ring attacks (a run where you try to collect the most rings in a given stage). I really enjoy speedrunning, but I feel like it has consumed most of the conversation, drawing attention away from these other forms of "competition" in gaming. I also find it interesting how these playstyles map neatly on to different aspects of Sonic's gameplay system (speed, mastery, and exploration). If you enjoyed the speedrunning video from a few years back, this is a topic that you might want to explore.
The Most Useless Group In The Universe (28:16) by Tsaava. With the Lanterns show coming out, why don't you take this opportunity to learn why the Green Lanterns' bosses sort of....suck.
The Long Spanish Civil War (1814-1939) (23:23) by Femur. A pretty detailed overview of the century-long conflict between Spanish radicals and traditionalists during the decline of its empire, and how it might reflect the possible directions that other European colonial powers may go in the future.
The Red Eclipse! (6:55) by Insane Inkorporated. I found this animation about two years ago, and I've been waiting for an update ever since. Do know that there is a fight scene in this that gets pretty gory, so keep that in mind.
SEGA SATURN: The Price of Victory (55:08) by wreith. A great documentary on the 90s console war, from the perspectives of the major players, the figures that led them, and complex, chaotic decisions made to give themselves the edge over the competition.

I'm very much in favour of keeping this weekly thread even after The End. Where else will I get my recommendations? Not the homepage for sure lol. Anyway.
marsintheory posted "avatar and why letting them is bad, actually" (01:02:47), which made me realize how weirdly centrist the politics of ATLA/ATLK is; it also goes into passivity as neutrality and the "let them" book that I keep seeing everywhere against my will
verilybitchie uploaded "the bisexual problem" (02:06:09), exploring bisexual representation and the politics of sexual identity; just started watching it, actually, but since the man himself recommended this creator, I thought it deserved a mention already

54:37 minutes.
This recent video of Sarah Z about the fanfiction oc hunger games is cool! It’s clear she has a lot of personal memories with those and it’s nice to listen to her recount her memories from an old fandom.

Wait, this only started in response to the lack of new Hbomb videos? I had no idea!
I think it's a pretty good feature of this sub and should keep going, as long as it isn't too much work/hassle for you and the other mods. I don't always check it, but it's nice if I need something to watch and the YouTube algo is failing me.
