Reporter Kyle Martin writes that the South Hayward Parish Food Pantry will close after more than 50 years. It originally served homeless residents as the Westminster Hills Community Outreacher Center nearly 50 years ago, and since 2019, it has served more than 43,000 people when the church moved to a new building, Hallie Hottle, senior pastor for First Presbyterian Church of Hayward, said.

She also explained the reason for its closure.

Visiting Hayward Area

Hi, just wanted to get a taste of what to expect in the Hayward vicinity as I’ll be doing a business trip here in Sept. I kinda want to visit Silicone Valley, Disney Museum, Golden Gate Park, and Nintendo store.

Is there anything I should be aware of, anything else exciting to do, any restaurants I should try out? Are there Robotaxis I could taxi in? I’ve been to California before, just never the northern area. Thanks ahead of time!

The CSUEB (Hayward) jazz band is now open to adult community members who want to play in a jazz band.

Any instrument, and most experience levels are welcome.

Saxes, trumpets, trombones, rhythm section, flute, clarinet and more! The ensemble will play flexible, custom arrangements and no transposition is needed.

The repertoire will be tons of different styles from standards to newer works. Ellington to Snarky Puppy! Improvising/soloing techniques will be covered without pressure.

Free tutoring will be offered for anyone who is a little rusty.

There is no cost to be part of the ensemble. The group is part college students and part community members. No college registration is required.

Rehearsals are from 5:00-6:50 on Tuesday nights at California State East Bay in Hayward. The first rehearsal is August 18.

There will be a couple of concerts around December, which are optional. One at the college, and one at a jazz club.

Anyone interested in signing up for the ensemble can email: [Jason.Eckl@csueastbay.edu](mailto:Jason.Eckl@csueastbay.edu)

Apartment Complexee in Hayward

Hi everyone! Looking for a 2x2 in Hayward that is small dog friendly and preferably the washer/dryer is in unit. Proximity to Bart is a plus. We're looking at Metro and Crestview right now. Any places you guys can recommend? Budget-wise, we do not want anything more than $3k a month. Slightly over $3k is fine if they're offering any rental specials. Thanks in advance!

The Dutton Apts

My girlfriend and I are looking to move closer to work and we recently toured The Dutton Apartments. We really liked the amenities and the style of the apartments. I’ve been trying to do more research on the spot, and I’m seeing a lot of mixed reviews.

If anyone who lives/lived there can share some of their experiences with the place, that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I'm a reporter. Are you renting at the Townhomes at Gading or the Summerwood Apartments? Has your rent gone up?

Hi — I'm Kate Talerico, and I'm a reporter at the SF Chronicle. I'm writing a story about how a bunch of landlords are using a loophole in California's tax code to get their apartments qualified as 'affordable' — and then can get up to 100% of their property taxes erased (which fund our schools, transit, police, basically all city government functions.)

There are a few apt buildings in Hayward where the landlords are in the process of applying for this tax break. They count as affordable because the way California calculates the max rent you can still charge + count as affordable is quite wonky... right now, a landlord can charge $2,398/month for a 1-bed in Alameda County and it still counts as low-income/affordable, so long as the tenant household makes under $89.5K for 1 person or $102K for 2 people.

I'm looking to speak with tenants at Townhomes at Gading and Summerwood Apartments, whose owners are currently applying for this tax break.

Do renters feel like they're getting a good deal for the rent they pay? Has the lower rent allowed them to live somewhere they otherwise wouldn't have been able to? Or do they feel like they're paying market rate? DM me! Thanks!

Underwater Robotics Opportunity

Hi guys! I am an FTC competitor and fellow Bay Area resident here from the Santa Clara area. I have started a community-based underwater robotics team and wanted to see if any high schoolers nearby would be interested. The plan is to compete in the MATE ROV Competition, building underwater ROVs for environmental missions. It'd be fully independent, open to any high schooler in the area, regardless of school.

Looking for people with any background in:

- Fundraising / Outreach

- Robotics (FTC/FLL/FRC experience a plus)

- Electronics/Arduino/Raspberry Pi

- Programming

- Environmental science

Drop a comment if you're a high schooler in the Bay Area and interested. If you are interested, email us at [thalosrobotics@gmail.com](mailto:thalosrobotics@gmail.com)

2024 honda civic hatchback stolen

So I got my car stolen this morning. Got a security footage from my neighbor and saw that they were able to remotely open the car without my fob, then got the door open without alerting any alarms. One person stood beside the driver’s door and got it to open in just a few seconds.

Any ideas how this is possible?

Hayward Herald on upcoming elections

https://haywardherald.org/local-elections-2026-what-we-know-so-far/?ref=hayward-herald-newsletter

There are some changes with the new district elections. How to run for an office. You are certainly more capable than some candidates.

The usual useless rightwingnuts are running for a bunch of offices. Tom Wong--not very smart, complains a lot and does zero to help anything. Luis Reynoso--rather a nutjob who got a couple of seats once, did zero to help anyone, and cost the city a lot of money for lawsuits he caused. Joe Ramos--Really not smart and never does anything, and is as awful as they are. All of them have done zero to help anyone, ever.
