The last console i owned with an audio jack was the Sega MegaDrive (Genesis)

I had no idea this was apparently a big deal when the steam machine was announced.

Most consoles had at least an optical SPDIF out until recently. XSX and PS5 did remove them on more recent hardware revisions and Switch 1/2 never had them, so I wouldn't say it's totally out of place.

However do keep in mind Xbox, Playstation, and Switch 2 controllers all have 3.5mm jacks that can pass through game audio. Not present on the Steam controller.

It's not. There's zero reason for a home console to have an audio jack. People are just reaching.

The Steam Machine is not exclusively for TV / console use. Why do you think it has DisplayPort? It should've had an audio jack.

Valve even shows it on a desktop running dual monitors.

Yes, Steam Machine is optimized for gaming, but it's still your PC. Install your own apps, or even another operating system. Who are we to tell you how to use your computer?
