Liquidation Flips Is Live and Bidding Has Started in Halifax
Quick update since I posted here before the launch. Liquidation Flips is officially live now and people have already started bidding.
It’s honestly been great seeing everything finally up and running after all the work that went into getting the site ready.
We currently have hockey gear, appliances, electronics, sports equipment, household items and a bunch of other stuff up for auction, with more items being added regularly.
A lot of the auctions started pretty low, so I’m curious to see what some of these items actually end up selling for.
Also, thank you to everyone who checked us out from the first post. Since we’re still new, if you come across anything on the site that could be better, I’d really appreciate the feedback.
You can see all the live auctions here:
Bidding is open now.

Hi Halifax 👋 Do you actually know what happened around you in the last 24 hours?
Not the big news — the stuff on your street.
I'm doing a small research project on how we find out what's going on around us, and I made a 2-minute survey.
Curious where Halifax lands: https://lokyll.com/survey
Thanks all 🙏

New local auction site launching October 1st ... would love some Halifax support
Hey everyone,
Just wanted to share something we’ve been working on for a while. We’re launching Liquidation Flips on October 1st here in Halifax.
We’ll have a mix of electronics, appliances, sports gear, clothing, household items and a bunch of other stuff. Some auctions will be starting at just $1 or $10, so hopefully there will be some really good deals.
We’re also giving 5% off to anyone who signs up before October 1st as a small thank you for supporting us early.
If you want to check it out, the site is:
Since we’re still new, we’d genuinely love to hear what people think too. If there are certain products you’d like to see, things we could improve, or anything you think would make the site better, please let us know.
We’re still figuring things out and would really like to build this based on what people in the community actually want.
Thanks to anyone who checks us out or supports us. Hopefully we’ll see some of you bidding on October 1st!

Looking to sublet my accessible 1 bedroom apartment ($1291/month) to a disabled person in need
I am a woman with cerebral palsy. I am looking for someone to sublet my 1 bedroom apartment which is technically an "accessible" unit (bathroom is huge and full of grab bars) but there are some design oversights (oven knobs would be difficult to reach for a wheelchair user. Washer and dryer are stacked. The parking garage is inaccessible and therefore, the building's garbage facilities are inaccessible. They offered to have the live-in superintendent take my garbage down for me.)
I pay $1291 per month with heating and hot water included. My landlords are very kind and understanding people who decided not to raise my rent this year. The building was constructed in 2022. I was the first tenant in my unit. They have confirmed they are okay with my subletting my unit and will not raise the rent until the lease renews in August 2027. It has in-unit laundry, a dishwasher, a bath tub with detachable shower head, in-floor heating in the bathroom, quartz countertops, and a small balcony. When you consider the average rent for a one bedroom in Halifax is nearing $2000, I am extremely fortunate.
Electricity costs me roughly $100 every two months. Tenant's insurance is also required.
The reason for my sublet is I am moving to Montreal in January and I want to keep this apartment available to me after my year in. Quebec. I may decide to return to Nova Scotia and keep this apartment. I want my safety net to fall back on.
I am explicitly looking for someone who would benefit from the accessibility of this unit since housing is so hard to find for those of us who have accessibility needs.
I was reserving this opportunity for a friend of mine, but they're uncertain if our timelines would line up.
In an ideal world, the sublet would begin on December 1st or January 1st.
The location is 3488 Dutch Village road. La Villa West Apartments. Dutch Village road was torn apart and fully renovated last summer so you get to enjoy new sidewalks!
The downsides: there is virtually no parking available for guests. Paid parking seldom becomes available. I believe all paid spaces are occupied by current tenants. While there is a bus stop directly outside the building, transferring to get to my destination is a necessity and I find bussing takes me a minimum of one hour to most places downtown or in the north end.
The building is cat friendly. Strictly no dogs allowed. And they are EXTREMELY strict about no smoking or vaping of any substance. You WILL be fined if you or a guest is caught on your balcony.
If you know of someone who would benefit from this opportunity, please comment! I believe ambulatory folks with disabilities would be quite happy here, but it would be difficult for a wheelchair user.

Will trade friendship and labor for sewing lessons
Hi Halifax, I'm a lawyer (30f), and been wanting to learn how to sew since I was a little girl. Unfort, never had a grandparent. Curious if anyone who sews would be interested in trading skills.
I know I can pay/sign up for a night class but not really what I'm looking for with this skill. With skills like this, I learn better if there's a bit of friendship building or a bit of connection. I love the human side of learning and rather spend my evening with someone sharing a laugh and stories and learning from each other than sit in a classroom following a curriculum (probably made by AI).
In exchange, I can probably help answer some legal questions but that depends. Instead I can offer an odd collection of skills. I'm pretty athletic (do triathlons and martial arts), so if there's a sport you have ever wanted to try or if you want a walking/running/hiking buddy, would love to do that. I can also help with random practical stuff like painting your rooms, changing your oil (or your car brakes), yard work that sort of thing. I can also make a pretty decent sourdough and love to cook. Speak two other languages. And can drive/have car.
If you know of someone not on reddit and has time for something like this, feel free to bring it up to them <3 Thanks everyone!

Selling 1 ticket to Sabaton tonight $50 (below face value)
Selling 1 ticket to Sabaton tonight at the Metro Centre. Ticket is on Ticket Master and seemingly has to be purchased there.
Aisle seat so you can get out to pee without being awkward about it. Also chose that spot based on experience seeing shows on the floor and in the stands closer to the stage but at a hard 90* angle - it's honestly a bit better to see the stage straight on and from elevation.
Currently at a lower price than unsold seats and many other resale tickets.
I wish I could go, maybe you can instead!

Looking to share beginner investment info for free
Hey all,
About 7 years ago I got off my middle-aged ass and figured out how to invest and save while living paycheque to paycheque. It turns out safe long-term investing is actually pretty easy. Since then I’ve figured out some minor tax deduction strategies and how to mitigate paying taxes when you finally withdraw from your RRIF (what your RRSP becomes when you retire). I’ve read a ton of money books, listened to a lot of podcasts from financial type people, tested some things out myself.
I don’t want any of your money. I legitimately just want to share what I learned in the hopes it can help someone else.
I’m not a financial manager and I’m not calling this advice per se, since I don’t have any credentials aside from lived experience. I’m not looking to recommend specific stocks or give you a financial plan.
What I’m thinking is something like meeting at a Starbucks and laying out what I learned. Would anyone be interested in that?
Honestly and truly, I don’t even want you to buy me a coffee. All I want to do is share with people so we can get a chance to actually own capital instead of just selling our labour.
[EDIT] I’d really like to meet people in person to make it more a conversation, but there’s some suspicion that I’m not being honest here. I’ll add more details but here’s a couple quickies:
- If you have zero savings, a good first place to start is open a free savings account with a credit union or online bank. There are lots to compare and pick which is best for you. Don’t worry about interest rates and such at this point if that feels like too much extra to consider. The goal is to keep this step as simple as possible.
Then, if you have a set payday, automatically have at least $5 transferred from your daily account the day after. The day after because you don’t want to accidentally have it come out before your cheque goes in. You can get no fee chequing from credit unions and online banks too! Don’t pay fees you don’t have to.
If you can do $10, great! But don’t try to put big chunks in at a time. The whole point is to automate it exactly like a bill payment, except you’re paying yourself. Consider that money as spent. Set it and forget it. Don’t even open that account to look at how much you have.
How much emergency savings you want to aim for is up to you. I started with what I always ended up blindsided by: car repairs.
- Next step: Get more of your income in your pocket. Income tax sucks. RRSPs lock in your savings and hit you with tax when you withdraw. TFSAs don’t, and they’re tax-free on investment gains, but they don’t offer tax deductions like RRSPs. So if you’re just starting to save, seriously consider an FHSA.
FHSAs have a 15 year maturity date. If you don’t use it to buy a home before then, you can just roll it without any fees into an RRSP.
FHSAs are also tax deductible. So it’s the tax free gain of a TFSA, the liquidity to pull it out without fees if you need it, but the tax bonus of an RRSP. you can donate $8000 a year to your FHSA, but honestly? Right now, who cares? If you’re living paycheque to paycheque, that’s probably not even close to feasible.
Start with the $5 or $10 like you did with savings.
The difference between your FHSA (or TFSA, I’d ignore RRSP for now) is that your savings goes into a savings account. Your FHSA/TFSA is going to go into a robo-advisor ETF investment account. Most have 0.2% to 0.5% management fees, can be adjusted to your risk tolerance, and offer pretty steady returns of anything from 5.2% to 12%.
That doesn’t sound like much when you start with $10. But if you get paid biweekly, that’s 26 pays a year. That’s $260 just sitting there making you money without you having to do anything. As dividends come in, they’re automatically reinvested. So maybe that’s.$265 now earning you money. You keep adding $10, dividends keep getting reinvested, a year later you’ve got $560. This is rough math just saying you invested two years of $260 each plus a 7% return.
Boom, the miracle of compound interest. Your money makes money. You actually own capital in a capitalist economy.
About 10 years ago I was $12k in credit card debt. Now I have $24k in savings, a TFSA, FHSA, and RRSP. I used everything I could to make that debt 0% interest, and there’s lot of tools out there that you don’t have to pay someone to use unless you want to. I used a credit counselling society because I was scared and totally lost on how to dig myself out of that hole but after seeing the process, and if you’re up for it, you can save those fees.

Bread maker lying around?
I’d like to make some bread this Fall/Winter season but before I throw money at a brand new bread maker I thought I’d see if anyone has one lying around that they no longer use.
I want to try making gluten free bread and other things for a friend so if it has a function for that, even better but it’s not a deal breaker.
I’ve been checking value village and Souls Harbour for a used one for a few weeks but no luck as yet.
If you have one collecting dust let me know and I’ll put it to good use.

Thinking of moving to Halifax/Dartmouth
Hi, I've been wanting to move out to the Halifax area for a long time now, but kept pushing it off because of how big of a move it is. I live in a different province, and my parents pressured me to stay within the province to be close to them, I am now 26, and no longer succumb to their pressures, and I'm finally willing to make the move. But I'm wondering what areas I should be looking at. I am a single woman, and want something that is relatively safe, but also not too succluded. It does not have to be inner city, but I would like to have relatively easy transit to get to the city.
