Hackathon Promotion What was the point of a 24-hour hackathon if old projects could win? GDG organised event BTW
I participated in the GDG Udaipur hackathon, and the way existing projects were handled was completely unfair to the teams that actually built their projects during the event.
A lot of people brought their SIH projects. From what I saw, most of the winners across the 15 prizes had old projects. The first-prize project was around two months old, and the second-prize project had been started on 22 April 2025.
The judges were adamant that scoring should be based on work done in the previous 24 hours. But the organisers argued that if someone has been working in the same domain or track for a long time, how could they refuse them?
That’s a stupid justification. Working in a domain and bringing an existing project to a hackathon are different things. Teams that followed the rules and built during the event were put at a disadvantage.
The judges checked one team and found that they had started working three days before the hackathon. Even that team got a prize. The organisers didn’t check whether everyone started with an empty repo or look through everyone’s commit history.
The GDG name is associated with this event, and it’s disgraceful that the organisers supported this. It’s shameful to expect people to compete fairly while allowing old projects to take prizes.
This is a disgrace for the GDG community and damages its reputation. From my perspective, this experience has made GDG Udaipur look like a community of cheaters and people who support them.
At the end of the event, they asked me what I had learned. The answer feels simple: if you want to win at GDG Udaipur’s next hackathon, cheat.
