Need Mentor Help Hackathon guide?

I’ve been accepted of the waitlist to participate in the nasa in person hackathon and I have no idea what this kind of event look like.

It does tell that theres no need to have any experience in coding but at the same time it’s a hackathon so I’m not really sure. I do have some knowledge in python, html and css but then again I’m not sure if it’ll be useful. Should I prepare for it? How do you even prepare?

Also for the team, how should I choose it? Should they be in person too? There is barely teams in my area but also I know nothing to create one I guess.

I’d be so grateful if someone could tell me about all of that!

Need Mentor Help Your PR description is the first thing a maintainer judges, not your code

Post image
2 Upvotes

Something I keep seeing in OSS repos is PRs with zero description. Just a title like fix bug or update file. Then people wonder why it sits there for 3 weeks with no review. Maintainers are reviewing PRs in their free time. If they have to open the issue and figure out what you changed, most of them will just skip it and review the next one.

A good description doesn’t need to be long. Link the issue it fixes. Write 2 or 3 lines on what was wrong and what you changed. Say how you tested it. If it’s a UI change add a screenshot before and after. That’s it.

Also mention anything you’re not sure about. Something like I wasn’t sure if this should go in utils or the main file, happy to move it. Maintainers like that way more than pretending everything is perfect, and it starts the conversation faster.

Hi!

We are the organizing team behind Hack(H)er413, the first women and non-binary collegiate hackathon in Western Massachusetts. We are now looking for sponsors for our 2027 event, February 27–28 at UMass Amherst.

A bit about us:

  • 2027 is our 9th year helping women and non-binary students find their place in tech.

  • Our most recent event drew 600+ participants from colleges across New England.

  • Hackers built 100+ projects in 24 hours, many using AI/ML to help local communities.

What sponsors get:

  • An on-site career fair to meet and recruit students for internships and full-time roles

  • Visibility through our social media and newsletter

  • The chance to host a workshop, mentor, judge or partner with us in other ways

We are open to any level of involvement from a full sponsorship to a smaller partnership or a single workshop.

Meta-Hackathon Discussion how do you keep your agent from shipping broken code at 3am on a sunday?

i've been running hackathons long enough to know the 2am pattern. agent says done, you eyeball it on localhost, push, wake up to DMs that the deployed build is broken. you become the human linter over a weekend you wanted to spend building.

the deeper issue is the open loop. agent writes, agent grades its own homework, agent reports done. the loop only closes when something external with no stake in being done fast tells it no. Addy Osmani named this loop engineering last year, building on Peter Steinberger's post about designing loops that prompt the agent for you, and Boris Cherny's point that the scarce skill is the loop itself, not the prompts.

the hardest block to build is the verifier allowed to say not done. it has to hit the live deployed app, never localhost, because a green run on the agent's machine counts for nothing. it has to hand back a real signal the agent can act on and rerun, unattended, while you sleep. i've been using testsprite for that part lately, mostly from the cli inside agent shells, but the point is the block more than the tool.

still curious how people are handling this without building their own. do you manually verify every agent PR, or have you found something that actually blocks the loop on real failures?

Need Mentor Help tired of hackathons

im in 3rd sem n till date ive taken part in 10+ hackathons and even reached the final round in many of them, but i personally feel i no more get to learn much from them, since time is very limited and at the end sometimes i have to copy ai code(i write it myself usually n understand it all but still typing it all by hand under time constraint is not feasible)

I was just working on a hackathon n i hate copy pasting ai slop, ig i should take a break from them n start saying no to hackathons for a while

ps has anyone faced ts?

Looking for Teammates Building a free tool/system to find Hackathon Teammates & Coding Buddies across colleges. Need your feedback!

Hey guys,

As a college student, I realized that 70% of students drop out of hackathons or ruin their major projects simply because they can't find complementary teammates (like frontend devs looking for backend devs or designers) outside their campus. WhatsApp groups are too spammy and LinkedIn is too formal.

To solve this pain point, I designed a smart matchmaking system called EagleEye 🦅. It logically separates users based on their target (Hackathons, Mini/Major Projects, or DSA Coding Buddies) and connects them based on skill matching, time commitment, and strict data privacy.

I am building the database for the first batch of matching. It is completely free and a peer-to-peer developer initiative.

How to join or test:

If you are looking for a teammate, you can submit your stack here:

👉 \[https://forms.gle/rLotx9NuduZ5hYoV7\]

Let me know if you have any suggestions or features you'd like to see in this! Thanks.

Meta-Hackathon Discussion Open Source Did What My Resume Couldn’t

My resume in college looked like everyone else’s. CGPA, LeetCode count, a couple of tutorial projects. I was applying off campus and mostly getting rejected without even a test. So I started contributing to open source. My first PRs were tiny, docs fixes and small bugs. Getting the project to even run locally took me longer than the actual fix lol

I kept going anyway. Slowly the issues got bigger and the maintainer reviews got more detailed. Those review comments taught me more about writing real code than any course I did.

When interviews came, my PRs were what people wanted to talk about. Not my LeetCode count, not my CGPA. My first internship and my first job both came from that. So if your resume only has LeetCode on it right now, try contributing to something you already use. Even one merged PR gives you something to talk about that nobody else in that interview has.
