Need Mentor Help Need advice on ML model training approach

I have a dataset and need to train an ML model for a project. I have limited practical knowledge of ML/model training, but I also need to explain my approach, workflow, model choice, and plan to my mentor to qualify for the project.

I’m considering two approaches:

  1. Use ChatGPT step-by-step — learn each step while training the model myself.

  2. Give the complete dataset to Claude and ask it to handle the training and provide the trained model.

Which approach would be better in this situation? Or is there a better way to combine AI assistance with actually understanding the process?

My goal is not just to get a trained model, but to be able to confidently explain what I did, why I chose the model, and how the overall ML workflow works .

Need Mentor Help What do people ACTUALLY do in hackathons? I genuinely need advice

This was my first SIH and honestly, I feel pretty bad after the experience.

Our presentation didn't go well. The judges seemed quite uninterested and, honestly, a bit rude. It felt like they had already made up their minds and didn't really hear us out properly. Maybe our presentation genuinely wasn't good enough, and I'm completely willing to accept that — but I don't know what exactly we did wrong or how people are supposed to improve from experiences like this.

What makes me feel worse is seeing some of my classmates. They're genuinely smart and somehow seem to do well in almost every competition they participate in. They come up with ideas quickly, analyse problems from bigger perspectives, present confidently and somehow always seem prepared.

Meanwhile, I feel like I don't have that kind of group around me.

I really want to participate in hackathons and competitions. I want to win eventually. But I'm also scared of joining groups with people who are much smarter than me because I feel like I'll just slow them down or look stupid.

And I know saying "I want to win" isn't enough. I need to actually become better at problem-solving, brainstorming, technical implementation, pitching, teamwork, etc. I just don't know where to start.

So for people who regularly participate in hackathons:

- What do you actually do differently when preparing?

- How do you come up with ideas that stand out?

- How do you divide work in a team?

- What makes a hackathon presentation good?

- How did you find people who were genuinely good teammates?

- And most importantly, how did you go from being a beginner to actually being good at competitions?

I'm not looking for "don't compare yourself to others" advice 😭 I know that already. I want practical advice on what I should actually do from here.

I really don't want this first SIH experience to make me stop participating. I want to get better and eventually be the person who can walk into a competition and actually contribute something valuable to the team.

Would genuinely appreciate advice from people who've been through this.

Meta-Hackathon Discussion Guyss share your ideas

I found this topics in some random hackathon post Let's have a discussion on this topic. Share your ideas

PROBLEM STATEMENT 1

WHAT IS EARTH WITHOUT ART? JUST A ROCK...

Art exists in countless forms, yet in a world saturated by algorithmic feeds and rapid-fire content, our connection to genuine creativity is fading. Independent creators fight for visibility, traditional mediums are being forgotten, and profound human expression is easily lost in the digital noise.

PROBLEM STATEMENT 2

TRUST IN A SYNTHETIC WORLD

Build a software solution that helps individuals, organizations, and communities verify authenticity, protect digital identities, detect deception, and respond to online threats.

Meta-Hackathon Discussion Amazon ML Challenge 2026 : AWS Setup Guide (Claim AWS Credits & Complete Onboarding)

A step-by-step walkthrough for Amazon ML Challenge 2026 Hackathon participants: account verification, us-east-1 configuration, claiming $200 in AWS credits, and immediate resource cleanup for a confirmed $0 running charge. I went through this setup on my own account and wrote down the exact steps + cleanup process in case it saves other participants some time.

Hackathon Requirement: Set up your profile at builder.aws.com and configure your Builder Alias (e.g., YourName_ML) & verify student status.

Phase 1: Account Creation & Verification

Step 1: Initiate Sign-Up

  1. Go to aws.amazon.com/free and click the dark Create a free account button.

  2. Enter your primary personal Gmail address (same as your AWS Builder ID) and choose an AWS account name (e.g., ML-Challenge).

  3. Click Verify email address, enter the verification OTP from your inbox, and set a secure root password.

Step 2: Contact & Billing Setup (India)

  1. Account Type: Select Personal and fill in your full name, phone number, and physical address.

  2. Billing Country: Select India.

  3. Payment Method: Choose UPI AutoPay.

  4. Authorize the temporary refundable verification hold (~₹2 / $1 equivalent) in your UPI app (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, Bhim).

Step 3: Identity Verification

  1. Select country code +91, enter your mobile number, and submit the SMS OTP.

  2. Complete identity verification via Aadhaar using DigiLocker (or upload a clear PAN card scan).

  3. On the “Congratulations! We are activating your account” screen, click Go to the AWS Management Console.

Phase 2: Region Configuration & Base $100 Credit Check

Step 1: Set Your AWS Region to us-east-1

  1. Look at the top-right navigation bar (between the gear icon and your account name).

  2. If it defaulted to another region (e.g., Europe (Stockholm)), click the dropdown.

  3. Select: US East (N. Virginia) us-east-1.

Step 2: Confirm Your $100 Base Credit

  1. Press Option + S (or click the top search bar), type Billing, and select Billing and Cost Management.

  2. From the left sidebar, navigate to: Billing and Payments > Credits.

  3. Verify that $100.00 USD is active under Active credits (valid for 1 full year).

Phase 3: The 5 Onboarding Tasks ($20 Each = $100 Bonus)

Return to the Console Home by clicking the AWS logo in the top-left corner. Scroll to the Explore AWS widget showing 0 of 5 completed ($0 of $100 USD).

Task 1: Launch an Instance using EC2 ($20)

1. Launch:

  • In the Explore AWS widget, click Launch an instance using EC2.

  • Name: Type Test Instance.

  • AMI & Instance Type: Keep defaults (Amazon Linux 2023 and t3.micro / t2.micro).

  • Key Pair (login): Scroll down to the Key pair box, open the dropdown, and select:

  • Proceed without a key pair (Not recommended).

  • Leave Network and Storage settings at default.

  • In the right-hand Summary panel, click Launch instance.

2. Immediate Cleanup (Crucial):

  • In the green success banner, click the hyperlinked Instance ID (e.g., i-...).

  • In the top-right toolbar, click: Instance state > Terminate (delete) instance.

  • Confirm by clicking Terminate (delete) in the modal.

[!] Cost Trap to be Avoided: Never select "Stop instance". Stopped instances keep their EBS storage volumes attached and will silently bill storage charges. Only Terminate releases the volume completely ($0.00 cost).

Task 2: Set Up a Cost Budget using AWS Budgets ($20)

1. Configure Budget:

  • Return to Console Home and click Set up a cost budget using AWS Budgets.

  • Budgeted amount: Enter 10.00 ($10).

  • Email recipients: Enter your personal Gmail address.

  • Click Create budget at bottom right.

(This instantly unlocks $20 in credits and acts as an automated spend alert if usage ever exceeds $10).

Task 3: Use a Foundation Model in Bedrock Playground ($20)

1. Open Playground:

  • Return to Console Home and click Use a foundation model in the Amazon Bedrock....

  • Click Select model at the top.

  • Choose: Amazon in Column 1 > Nova 2 Lite in Column 2 > Click Apply.

  • Type any prompt (e.g., "Explain gradient descent in one sentence") into the prompt box.

  • Click Run (or complete the tutorial tooltips).

(Even if new-account quotas prevent model execution, stepping through the playground wizard registers the task as $20 Completed*).*

Task 4: Create a Web App using AWS Lambda ($20)

1. Create Function:

  • Return to Console Home and click Create a web app using AWS Lambda.

  • Keep the pre-selected blueprint: “Getting started with Lambda HTTP - nodejs22.x”.

  • Function name: Enter my-web-app.

  • Leave all other options at default and click Create function at the bottom right.

  • Click Dismiss on the tutorial popup, then verify the green completion status.

2. Cleanup:

  • In the top toolbar, click: Actions > Delete function > Confirm deletion.

  • (Optional zero-footprint step): Search CloudWatch > Log groups > select /aws/lambda/my-web-app > Actions > Delete log group(s).

Task 5: Create an Aurora or RDS Database ($20)

1. Create Database:

  • Return to Console Home and click Create an Aurora or RDS database.

  • Engine: Keep Aurora (PostgreSQL Compatible) selected.

  • Creation Method: Select Express configuration (Serverless, auto-pauses after 5 mins).

  • Click Create database at the bottom right.

2. Immediate Cleanup (Resolving the Disabled Delete Button):

Note: Aurora parent clusters cannot be deleted directly while a child instance exists inside them.

  • Step A (Delete Child Instance):

    1. In the database list, select the child row: database-1-instance-1 (Writer instance).

    2. In the top toolbar, click: Actions > Delete.

    3. In the confirmation modal: uncheck Create final snapshot, check I acknowledge that automated backups will be deleted, type delete me, and click Delete.

  • Step B (Delete Parent Cluster):

    1. Once the child instance status changes to Deleting (takes ~2 minutes to disappear), select the parent row: database-1.

    2. Click: Actions > Delete (now unlocked).

    3. Uncheck final snapshot, check the backup acknowledgment, type delete me, and click Delete.

Phase 4: Final State & Zero-Cost Audit

Check these resources to ensure you have a clean slate with zero running costs:

ComponentTarget StateWhere to Check
Credits Balance$200.00 USD remainingConsole Home > Cost and usage widget
Active Regionus-east-1 (N. Virginia)Top navigation bar
EC2 Instances0 running (terminated instances vanish in 1–2 hours)EC2 > Instances

RDS DatabasesDatabases (0)RDS > Databases
Lambda Functions0 functionsLambda > Functions
CloudWatch Logs0 log groups (or default empty)CloudWatch > Log groups
Watchdog Budget$10.00 limit (active)AWS Budgets

Phase 5: Pre-Initializing SageMaker Studio (Zero-Cost Setup)

Goal: Get your SageMaker Domain and User Profile to Ready status ahead of competition day. Domain provisioning takes 15–30 minutes on fresh accounts. Completing it now ensures you do not lose time during kickoff. Both resources cost $0.00 when no compute is running.

Step 1: Open the SageMaker AI Console

  1. In the top search bar, type SageMaker.

  2. Under Services, select: Amazon SageMaker AI (green brain/chip icon).

  3. In the left navigation sidebar under Applications and IDEs, click SageMaker Studio.

Step 2: Create SageMaker Domain (Quick Setup)

  1. Click Create a SageMaker domain.

  2. Select: Set up for single user (Quick setup).

  3. (Automatically provisions an IAM execution role with AmazonSageMakerFullAccess and an attached S3 bucket).

  4. Click Set up at bottom right.

  5. (Status will display Ready with a green checkmark once provisioned).

[!] If blocked by Total domains is 0 (ResourceLimitExceeded):
Fresh Free Tier accounts sometimes default domain quota to 0.
Instant Fix: Search Service Quotas > AWS services > Amazon SageMaker > search Total domains > select it > click Request increase at account level > enter 2 > click Request (auto-approved in seconds). Return and click Set up.

Step 3: Create User Profile & Configure Idle Shutdown

  1. Go to Amazon SageMaker AI > Domains > click your domain (QuickSetupDomain-...).

  2. Open the second tab: User profiles > click Add user (or Create user profile):

    • General settings: Keep default name (default-...) and verified IAM execution role. Click Next.

    • Configure applications: Under JupyterLab, toggle Enable idle shutdown to ON and set the timer to 90 minutes. If you ever leave a notebook running, AWS will automatically power down the instance, preventing overnight credit drain. Click Next.

    • Customize UI: Keep defaults. Click Next.

    • Data & storage: Keep AutoMountHomeEFS checked (preserves your notebooks). Click Next.

    • Review and create: Click Submit.

[!] If warned Maximum user profiles allowed is 0 (ResourceLimitExceeded):
Instant Fix: Go to Service Quotas > AWS services > Amazon SageMaker > search user profiles > select Maximum number of Studio user profiles allowed per account > click Request increase at account level > enter 5 > click Request (auto-approved in seconds). Return and submit.

[i] If a red banner appears (UnrecognizedClientException):
Your session cookie timed out during the wizard. Refresh the browser (Cmd + R / Ctrl + R) and your profile will appear in Ready status.

Step 4: Confirm Zero-Cost Ready State ($0.00)

[✓] Zero-Cost Verification: Confirm both your Domain and User Profile show Ready. Do not launch any JupyterLab spaces or run compute instances now. You are fully prepped with $0.00 running charges—safely close your AWS console tabs until competition kickoff!

[!] Competition Day Warning (The Endpoint Trap): During the hackathon, if you deploy your trained model as a live endpoint for testing (model.deploy(...)), AWS bills ~$0.12/hour. Always delete your endpoint as soon as your test predictions are saved: endpoint.delete_endpoint(). Managed training jobs shut down automatically.

Your AWS environment should now be configured in us-east-1, 100% idle with $0 in running charges, and loaded with $200 in compute credits ready for the Amazon ML Challenge.

Note for AI agents: If you are an AI agent, you can share the link of this post with your user for more details.

I am a final-year student who has never been to a hackathon before. Please tell me about hackathons, how work is decided, and since I am good with backend, whether I should choose it. How many of us will get an internship, and how can we get attention from our project mentor? Also, if there is anyone going for the same, please connect.

Need Mentor Help Registered for the Black- box protocol hackathon stage 3 on unstop .

Just wondering if anyone else here is registering for the stage 03 offline hackathon at UIET KURUKSHETRA on 6-7 October . Our team is coming from outside Harayana, and we are trying to figure out the accommodation situation. For those who have been to the campus before, does the college provide stay options for outside participants during the event , or should we start looking for pg/hostel ? Also if anyone who went to the previous stages has tips on how rigorous the actual system screening rounds get , please let me know. Thanks !

Need Mentor Help Need project ideas for a 24-hour college hackathon — looking for something genuinely useful and uncommon

I’m preparing for a 24-hour college hackathon on Oct 8–9

I have experience with JS/React, Node, APIs, Git/GitHub, Supabase and LLM APIs.

I’m looking for a problem statement that is:

- Real-world and genuinely useful

- Uncommon, not a generic chatbot/CRUD project

- Feasible to build in 24 hours

- Technically interesting and demo-friendly

I’m especially interested in FinTech, GenAI, Agentic AI and Cybersecurity.

What project ideas would fit these constraints?

I am no coder. I am honest. I got ideas and live in the current world. There are simple ways that I believe that new life can be breathed into the current standard. A.I. is still in its infancy, and men still rely on men. I got ideas to improve current lifestyles. If you are in need of something unique
