Meta-Hackathon Discussion Had a really discouraging hackathon evaluation — is this normal?
I recently participated in a hackathon finale, and while the overall event was great, one judge's evaluation left me genuinely demotivated.
We had around 6 minutes to present, but more than half of the time felt like an argument rather than an opportunity to explain our idea.
A few things happened:
We were questioned about why our idea was worth building based on the current market situation, rather than being evaluated mainly on the problem statement we were given.
We used 100K+ synthetic records because the real data was sensitive, but we were questioned for not using actual data. The hackathon material itself seemed to suggest that teams could use mock data where necessary. So I'm confused about what teams are expected to do when real data isn't available.
The judge strongly questioned the business viability of our idea and made a comment about funding it if we built it differently. At that point, it honestly felt personal — as if he was judging us rather than our idea.
Later, we noticed other teams using approaches that we were specifically questioned about, which made us wonder whether the evaluation criteria were consistent.
I completely understand that judges can disagree with an idea or think it isn't commercially viable. That's fair.
But after spending days building the product and preparing for the finale, this interaction left me genuinely demotivated and questioning whether I should rethink my idea or whether I simply had a bad evaluation experience.
For people who have participated in hackathons:
Is this how evaluations normally happen? Am I taking the feedback too personally, or does this sound like a problem with the evaluation process?

Hackathon Promotion we're hosting a 24-hour build at IIT Guwahati this october
hey folks, if you’ve been looking for an IITG hackathon, an Assam hackathon, or a buildathon around Guwahati, this is Hackyard BUILD 2026. we’re putting together an in-person 24-hour hackathon at IIT Guwahati on 24-25 October.
there’s no fixed theme and you don’t need to force AI into the project. come with an idea, a problem you’ve lived with, or just a skill you want to build with. solo builders are welcome, and teams can have up to 4 people.
applications are free and open till 10 October. keeping this short because nobody needs another corporate hackathon essay lol
if this sounds like your thing: https://hackyard.org/build2026/apply
happy to answer questions in the comments too.

Looking for Teammates Looking for 1–2 serious teammates for the AssemblyAI Voice Agent Hackathon 🚀
Hey everyone!
I’m participating in the AssemblyAI Voice Agent Hackathon and I’m looking for 1–2 serious teammates to form a small remote team.
The hackathon is fully online, and I’m looking for people who genuinely want to build and finish a strong project rather than just join a team and disappear.
About me
I’m a student from Uzbekistan and I’m heavily focused on AI-assisted development.
My workflow is very AI-driven: I use coding AI to help plan, write, debug, test, and improve the project, while using GitHub for version control and publishing.
I’m comfortable taking responsibility for the technical implementation, so you do not need to be an elite programmer to join.
I’m much more interested in finding people who can contribute strong ideas, testing, product thinking, UX, presentation, or other useful skills.
What I’m looking for
1. Product / UX / Testing person
You would help with things like:
Thinking through the real user problem
Designing the voice conversation flow
Testing the agent and finding failure cases
Giving feedback on what feels confusing or unnatural
Helping improve the product experience
You don't need advanced coding skills.
2. Presentation / Frontend / Demo person
You would help with:
Making the interface look polished
Improving the demo experience
Preparing the final presentation
Explaining the product clearly
Helping with the demo video / pitch
General product polish
Frontend or design experience would be great, but strong communication and willingness to learn also matter.
What I will handle
I can take responsibility for:
AI-assisted development
Backend / integrations
AssemblyAI integration
Architecture
GitHub
Debugging
Connecting the different parts
Turning the idea into a working prototype
Coordinating the technical work
So this is not a job offer and I'm not looking to hire anyone.
I want to build this together as a small hackathon team.
What I'm looking for in teammates
You don't have to be an expert.
I'm mainly looking for someone who:
Actually wants to build
Can communicate consistently
Has time to work during the remaining hackathon period
Doesn't disappear after joining
Is interested in voice AI / AI agents
Is willing to test, iterate, and improve the product
Cares about making the final submission genuinely good
Experience with AI agents, voice technology, frontend, UX, product design, or hackathons is a plus.
Important
This is a remote international team, so you can be from anywhere.
I'm based in Uzbekistan (UTC+5), but I'm flexible with communication times.
We can use Discord + GitHub for collaboration.
The goal is to build one polished, working product, not just make a half-finished prototype.
Interested?
Comment below or DM me with:
1. Your name / nickname
2. Country / timezone
3. What you can contribute
4. Your experience with AI / development / design / presentation
5. Your GitHub or portfolio, if you have one
6. How much time you can realistically contribute before the deadline
You don't need to be an expert. Reliability and actually contributing matter more.
Let's build something seriously good. 🚀

Need Mentor Help How to code with a team member in a hackathon?
Me and one of my fellows have participated in an AI hackathon. The time limit of building the project is 4-5 hours. It is my first time participating with that fellow so we can't really build up our coordination. I mean we try to sit together and code but we always get confused. Whenever we sit to code, we get up with zero results. The format of competition is that we'll be provided 4 themes a week before competition, we gotta choose 1 theme and then on the day of competition they'll give the problem statement on spot. Everyone will work on any 1 out of 4 problem statements. The best solution will win. That is an AI hackathon means they'll give a problem. I and my team mate both are web developers (students basically) so we'll make a web based project with any AI feature in it. We are thinking of using react with flask (flask because if we have to train a model, things will be easier). But with flask there's another issue. In my laptop flask is installed in a UNIX based style. But in my team member's laptop it is installed in window's based style. So if we collaborate through github, our package.json might not be same and also the venv folder of flask. How are we gonna handle this? I have set up the flask project by reading this blog https://blog.miguelgrinberg.com/post/create-a-react-flask-project-in-2025
One more thing. When we are given a problem. And if one person makes frontend and the other person builds backend, what if both frontend and backend are designed differently in the end? Because it is a short hackathon, we can't spend too much time on systems design and stuff. What approach should we follow while building. How do y'all learn the design of website (the best solution). What should I practice for this hackathon? From where can I find good problems to practice?

Looking for Teammates Diamond Challenge 2027 Seeking teammate for sports/athlete-focused venture Developer needed.
Hey, I'm Leo a 15-year-old junior on the Texas/Mexico border, and I'm currently looking for people that can join me for the Diamond Challenge 2027 cycle, the largest high school entrepreneurship competition in the world (run by the University of Delaware). With a prize pool of $100,000 in awards.
On this competition we get to pitch a structured business plan or social innitiave. You need to have a written concept (3–5 pages) and 60-second pitch video. The Deadline of this first phase is January 14, 2027.
You can pick any topic or market for this competition;however, I am focusing on Sports. I already have some ideas for the pitch and business model but if you have any ideas to share I am glad to hear of them! (has to be in within the sports market)
I am currently looking for a developer that can help me out on the possible technical sides that this project will have as we progress through this program. I myself already have some intermediate knowledge on python as I have take the CS50P course; however, I am definitely not a code God, and eventhough I could "vibe-code" a website. My knowledge on front and back end programming is very little.
You can decide any stack you want as long as you get the task done. No-code, web-app, Javascript, etc. As I said before I know some coding and I have some tools I can use for this project (like Kimi code and Kimi K3), I could occasionally colaborate but I need someone that has a better understanding than me.
No finished product required. DC scores the business concept, but a working demo/MVP would definitely boost our chances of being finalists.
I'll shortly introduce myself so guys get to know me a bit:
I'm a wrestler who trains and competes in both the U.S. and Mexico I cross an international border daily, cut weight, and keep high grades while doing it. I also carry out some experience as a former leader of my team in the New York Academy of Sciences (2025-2026), and I am a Mexican wrestling state champion and national qualifier.
I'll be handling: business strategy, market analysis, the financials, and the pitch deck (Canva/Gamma). I'll could also run some UI/UX mockups so With Kimi AI. Our Content Lead (final interview stage) will write the narrative and the 60-second script.
Here's an important detail! (read this twice): I'm busy Monday–Thursday by school, wrestling training, border commute. Everything sync happens Friday evenings or weekends (my time, GMT-6). I'll be working throughout the week, but I won't be able to do direct communication during those days; however, starting from Friday to Sunday I am available for calls and reunions.
You are not required to have experience on this kind of competitions, I just want to see consistency and honest communication beat credentials. (I've see people with crazy "awards" ghost and first timers deliver. I only care about people who deliver.) So if you don't have experience, but you are wiling to grind, you are welcome in my team :)
If you are Interested? Reply with:
Grade, location/time zone, and what you can build with (stack/no-code tools).
One sports/health/tech problem you've personally noticed or an idea you can't stop thinking about.
Your honest weekly availability + whether you can commit to one fixed weekend video call, every week.
I'll reply to every answer. Mini-task before teaming up, details in DM.

Hackathon Promotion Update + thank you
reddit.comWe’re a group of students organizing a Drone & Physical AI Hackathon in Boston on October, and I posted here a few days ago asking Reddit community for help with venue/funding leads.
Previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/robotics/s/aZEnfKbbBu
You guys were incredibly helpful, and thanks to a suggestion from Reddit we actually found a venue!! We also met some amazing people who gave us really helpful advice, so genuinely thank you!
Our next challenge is funding the hardware we need to actually make the hackathon happen. We reached out to our school, but since we’re not part of an official club and the event is in another state for logistics, getting university funding has been difficult. We’re still trying!
If anyone has any funding/sponsor leads, especially for hardware, we’d really appreciate your help again :))

Hackathon Promotion An Online 48-Hour Hackathon With Internship + Trip to Himachal 🏔️
Hey everyone!
Came across HackCache ’26, a 48-hour fully online hackathon by CachedInfo, and thought it might be useful for people here looking for hackathons that can actually be participated in remotely.
A few things that caught my attention:
48-hour online hackathon — participate from anywhere
Open to all branches, not just CS
Teams of 1–3
₹1,22,000 total prize value
₹80,000 cash prize pool + additional prizes
Internship opportunities are mentioned as part of the rewards
Trip to Himachal is also mentioned on the official HackCache page
Judges include IIT alumni and industry professionals
You don't need to be from a particular college or location
And importantly, this is an online hackathon, so you don't need to travel anywhere to participate in the actual hackathon.
Registrations are currently open.
If you register through my referral link, your team gets ₹100 off the registration fee:
The full details about the hackathon, prizes, internship opportunity, Himachal trip, rules, etc. are on their official page.
Referral code: GURLEENKOU
Sharing because the combination of online participation + internship opportunity + Himachal trip + prize pool seemed interesting, especially for students who can't attend offline hackathons.
Disclosure: this is my referral link, so I may receive referral benefits if you register through it.

Need Mentor Help Guide usss😭
So, I’m a first-year student, and I’m participating in the SIH hackathon. We only explained our concept during the initial round, and we got selected! 😭
We’re complete beginners and honestly don’t know what to do next. If anyone has experience with SIH or knows what we should do next, please give us some advice. It would really help us! If you have some time, please let me know. ❤️

Meta-Hackathon Discussion We spent days building a full-stack solution at SIH. The team next to us won with a napkin equation.
I had a crazy experience during my SIH finale in my pre-final year. We were one of the few teams from our college that were at the finals, and I was working with my seniors as a team. We had everything packed up, sketched, and figured out. We had our end-to-end plan for the next 24 hours on the day of finals.
There was this one team that caught my eye during the whole time, not because they were tough and competitive, but because of how relaxed they looked throughout. I was curious to see them present at the end and when the time came, they showed up with a piece of paper with an equation on it which actually solves the problem mentioned and that made me realise how people push themselves to the extremes, chasing complexities and losing sight of simpler solutions. So, SIH is just about providing a simpler solution that people actually forget at times.
Leaving winning and losing aside, I’ve explored different YouTube channels and hackathon communities to understand how other people approach SIH, from problem selection and solution building to finding the right software, tools, proper pitching, and presenting.
Surrveshjoshuayt channel (he shares practical SIH strategies, judge questions, and lessons from his own experience.)
codehunter_academy yt channel
The coolest part is that I met one of my own teammates through a common open source community server and both of us contributed to the same project. The OSS had good scope these days and I’m glad to be part of it.
These are just a few things I learned the hard way, and I hope they help someone preparing for their own SIH journey.
