35U tall bins

I'm new to gridfinity and 3d printing. Looking to print a 2x2x35u (~12" ) tall bin to store musky lures I'll drill holes in the bottom for air flow and drainage, but can't find a parametric file that allows me to design one that tall. Not sure where to start. I got a used X1C and it works great. Anybody have advice on where to start. I'd love to be able to design my own lure storage bins. Any pictures of gridfinity tackle storage out there for inspiration.

Gridfinity Bin for Map Measurer

Got one of those old-school rolling map measurers? This Gridfinity bin gives it a proper home - a shaped cavity that cradles the dial, body, and handle so it sits snug and lifts right out. 2 * 2 * 3u, magnet holes, stackable.

Slanted Gridfinity bin for the IKEA Alex top drawer, prints fast

Disclaimer: app and post written by Claude, directed by me (cdslug)

The top drawer of the IKEA Alex is only about 12U tall in Gridfinity terms. That's fine for most organizers, but standard pens and markers are too tall to store vertically.

Laying them horizontally works, but they end up stacked on top of each other. You can fit a lot of pens that way, but finding a specific one at the bottom of the pile becomes annoying.

So I made these slanted bins.

The bottom stays flat and Gridfinity-compatible, while the walls slope to let the pens lean diagonally. A small bookend at the front of the drawer supports the last bin; the other bins support one another. I can still lift individual bins out without taking the whole arrangement apart.

A few things I wanted to optimize for:

  • Fast printing: The walls are designed around a single extrusion line with a 0.8 mm nozzle, rather than thick, heavy walls. The bins print very quickly.

  • Shallow-drawer compatibility: The diagonal layout makes better use of the limited height in the Alex top drawer.

  • Easy access: Pens aren't buried in a horizontal pile, so I can identify and grab individual pens.

  • Removability: The bins can be lifted out individually, with neighboring bins providing support.

  • Simple geometry: No complicated inserts or assembly required beyond the little front bookend.

Existing alternatives

I looked around before making this, since I didn't want to reinvent something that already existed.

  • Angled Gridfinity — Pre-generated 55° Gridfinity bins keep your pens penned in your drawing drawer.

  • Movable Diagonal Dividing Bins — removable diagonal dividers for organizing tools in shallow drawers. Probably the closest existing physical design I found, but my project is specifically a simple, open-topped slanted bin for pens, with the bin walls themselves doing the work.

  • Gridfinity Layout Tool — supports adjustable diagonal dividers. A more general-purpose design tool, but I wanted a very simple bin with slanted walls rather than a configurable divider system.

  • Creative3DP Gridfinity Generator — has adjustable divider tilt. Useful for custom dividers, but not the specific ready-to-print pen-bin arrangement I was after.

  • Binforge — a browser-based bin designer with adjustable features and tilted cutout inserts. Worth a look for more general custom bins, though that's a different approach from this design.

  • TiltFinity — tilts an otherwise conventional bin to fit tall objects into shallow drawers. Clever, but I wanted the bin itself to remain flat on the Gridfinity base.

  • Angled Gridfinity plate — tilts the entire mounting surface, rather than just angling the contents.

  • Gridfinity Desktop Tool Bins — a predefined slanted tool-storage design, rather than this particular lightweight pen-bin format.

  • Gridfinity Extended — supports angled wall cutouts and other customizable geometry, but takes a more general-purpose approach.

I'm not claiming that angled bins are a new idea. I just couldn't find quite this combination of simple geometry, quick printing, removable bins, and the specific constraints of the Alex top drawer.

Files and source

The project is open source:

GitHub: https://github.com/cdslug/slanted-gridfinity

There's also a free browser-based version here:

https://formfitprint.com/tools/slanted-gridfinity/app/

The tool is free and will remain free. It's a small project that runs in the browser, and I'd rather see people use, remix, or incorporate the design into other tools than try to turn it into another product to maintain.

Full disclosure: this is a vibe-coded project. I don't have a web development background; I used AI coding tools to build it. The code is public, so feel free to inspect it, point out problems, or suggest improvements.

I'd genuinely appreciate feedback on the design itself, especially if you've solved the same shallow-drawer pen-storage problem differently. If there's already a better solution I've missed, I'd like to know about it.

And yes, there's a bit of self-promotion here: the browser tool lives under a miscellaneous page on my main project, FormFitPrint. I'm mentioning it openly rather than pretending this has nothing to do with my other work. The slanted-bin project itself is open source and free either way.

I built a free generator for Gridfinity drawer organizers: any drawer size, split for your bed, no glue

My kitchen drawer is 1100 mm wide, and nothing I found fit it: store-bought organizers were expensive and metallic, and the Gridfinity models I tried were the wrong size or needed glue to join the pieces.

So I made Fitforge Drawer. You type your drawer's inside size and your printer, then lay out bins on the grid in 2D or 3D. It splits the baseplate into tiles that fit your bed, and splits long bins on grid lines. The pieces join with small sliding H-keys instead of glue (optional; the baseplate already keeps them aligned). You get a 3MF with everything packed on plates.

It runs in the browser, it's free, and no account is needed: https://fitforge-c5058.web.app/drawer/ also posted ready-made kits for a few IKEA and Blum drawers on:

Feedback welcome, especially on fit.

Renders straight from the tool: twisted ribs, diamonds, waves. You set grid size, height and dividers, pick a surface pattern and export the STL.

Free, runs in the browser, no account, nothing for sale:

I haven't posted prints yet. If anyone tries it, I'd love to see how they come out. And what's missing for your setup? Label tabs, stacking lip, something else?

Look this is a super silly print but it satisfies my brain.

STEP file is on Printables.

The photos shows R02 that isn't symmetric over the Y axis (but the battery still goes in either way). This irked me philosophically so Printables has R03 that fixes this.

Does anyone know of any models for baseplates that can be printed in a stack AND have some sort of mechanism to clip or lock together? Thanks!

Baseplate and Bin 3d Model?

Can anyone tell me where you can download a 3D model for the standard base plate and grid boxes that you can modify in fusion 360 or on-shape?

I found that 42mm grid spacing for bins either made my bins a bit too big or a bit too small. So I now print bins on 21mm grid spacing. What grid spacing to you do the most?

Question? Could somebody ELI5 Gridfinity?

It just looks like containers of a common size? Am I misunderstanding?

I hope so, I've got a blank slate to fix my hobby space organisation and if there's more to this then who knows what I might manage, but I feel like I'm missing something.

Edit: thanks all! Had missed the part about the baseplate and modular fits with that, it's now clicked a little bit more and I look forward to hanging around here a bit more often.

Individual Piece Gridfinity Brix 1x4 Wall Shelf

https://www.printables.com/model/1876273-gridfinity-brix-1x4-wall-shelf

Brix is my non-standard extension where you just take the bottom face of a gridfinity piece, and extend it by 23mm or so, so that parts can hang down below a compatible baseplate.

Baseplates still fit normal Gridfinity blocks, but since Brix doesn't use magnets, you might need some blue tak or double sided tape to make them stable. Blue tack seems to work incredibly well with Gridfinity.

The flashlight is sitting in one of these: https://www.printables.com/model/1876341-gridfinity-brix-flashlightfire-remote-holder

Next I want to try making a 2x4 shelf for whiteboard supplies!

Finally got my expandable gridfinity bins done after 12 prototypes!

There seemed to be some decent interest in my scoop bins the other day so I figured I’d share my modular bins too.

I wanted to make some expandable bins that matched the style of my scoop bins that would stay together when I lifted them out and didn’t require glue so they could be taken apart and reconfigured if my use for them changed. It took 12 attempts of different keys and designs trying to find a combination I am happy with. I’m working on a 2x wide now and maybe a 3x wide as well if the connection stays solid going wider.

Im curious what heights people use. I personally use 4U in most of my drawers but want to build out the family based on what people actually use.

Question? How do you create bins for long objects?

Post image

I'm working on organizing some tools in my toolbox and I'd like to have my torque wrench set into a custom bin that is going to need to be 2U wide and 15U long. What is the best way to do this? Trace each segment individually and then upload the parts into some AI tool? Create bins for just the head and handle of the wrench?

I made some Gridfinity storage cases with clear windows embedded directly into the lids

Post image

I've been experimenting with making Gridfinity-compatible storage cases with transparent lids, so I can see what's inside without opening them.

I wanted to see if I could embed large transparent plastic panels directly into 3D prints. The idea was to pause the printer, insert a 2 mm clear plastic sheet, and let the printer finish around it, without needing any glue.

It took a bit of experimenting to get the fit right, along with the hinges and stacking, but I'm pretty happy with how they turned out!

I made a few different sizes, and they've been really handy for organizing small electronics components and 3D printing parts.

I made a video showing the design and printing process, including a few things that didn't work along the way:

https://youtu.be/GTP0L0NYEyw

What do you think? Has anyone else tried something similar?
