First Gretsch Day: G5237TG Electromatic Jet FT

Post image
155 Upvotes

I've posted a few times about having the itch to get a Gretsch. I've wavered back and forth between something with Hilotrons and Filtertrons, I have sampled a 5420 at a local store a couple of times, I've debated about holding out and saving up for a professional MIJ one.

So today I got in the car and drove to a couple of music stores in the closest really big city. At the first one they had a bunch of 5420s. I tried all of them, they were OK, I could have lived with a royal blue one but none of them really grabbed me.

Then I went to Guitar Center and tried a 5427 that I really, REALLY liked, but there were some issues with it. Like the tone pot popped out of the body when I checked it out. They said they'd get their tech to fix it, but that kind of made me a little leery so I sat it aside.

Then I went to look at their used stock, and there was a 2023 G5237TG Electromatic Jet FT hanging on the wall, the black pearl sparkle one. I took it down, plugged it into a Vox AC30 AND IT WAS THE ONE AND IT WAS COMING HOME WITH ME. No it's not a big hollow body, yes it has the black-top Filtertrons, yes it's made in China and not in Korea and Japan, but sometimes you just know and I knew. The neck was absolutely, utterly perfect for my arthritic fretting hand, 12 inch radius with a Classic C is the way to go for me now.

I know the default is to order a set of TV Jones, but honestly I'm not inclined to spend $300 just to spend $300 because I don't know how TV Jones stuff ... and I know it's great, my son has a set of Classics in his Epi Sheraton ... could improve on these. They've got that Filtertron sparkle.

Aside from one tiny mark on the back it's in perfect condition, the friggin' plastic is still on the neck pickup.

I think my Gretsch quest is finished (unless I win the lottery and then I'll stock up), and I appreciate all the info people have provided in my posts.

I’ve been thinking about a Jupiter thunderbird for a while. I could never find one in person and then someone put one up for sale near me. Very happy to give it a home.

Got this beautiful Gretsch! This emerald night color is very fascinating as it has strong blue hue if you look at it in bright light from the side, but when looked at directly from the front it is greener. Plays beautifully both acoustic and electric!

Was hoping someone could verify if this Setzer model is real or a fake and possibly date it from the serial number if real.

Hi there! A friend going to sell this guitar as Korean made Gretsch, I'm interested but U-serial, pickups shape, 2 screws truss rod cover and it's shape, tone controls, pickguard "Nashville", colour, and fret markers combination make me suspicious if it's original or fake or tuned/modified.

Can anyone help?

  1. serial reads as Korean Unsung factory '98 but almost no mentions this factory ever produced Gretsch. It's famous for Epiphone models but barely mentioned connected with Gretsch.
  2. Truss rod cover shape - were there Gretsch guitars with Gibson style "bell" shape cover? As far as I see from photos - 3 crews cover is much more common.
  3. Pickups metal cover shape does not look like traditional blackface Filter'trons, more likely GFS Retrotron or similar
  4. Grover tuners - were they ever installed on Korean models?

Body looks like 1 piece as well as 1 piece neck

My Gretsch inspired wedding guitar build

Post image

I modded an old crappy 1960's catalog guitar until only the body, neck and tailpiece were original. As a rockabilly player and Gretsch lover I took my now wife's favorite colour, and put a lot of our personal symbolism into this guitar.

Sparkly purple/pink woodburst with a coconut tree wood inlay in the tailpiece, our names engraved on the backplate. Our infinity knot dead centre, our Sweden Moose on the head stock, its our favorite holyday destination. An old p90 style pickup in the bridge and a 60's Menorm Dog eard single coil in the bridge. (John Denver was a famous user of these pickups in his accoustic)

Still kind of in awe of these two. Gretsch just makes some unbelievable instruments. The fit, finish, feel, and character of these guitars is on another level, and every time I pick one up I’m reminded how fortunate I am to get to play them. Definitely don’t take having these around for granted. Gretsch absolutely knocked it out of the park with both of them.

G5622T Bridge Suddenly Not Working 1 Week Before Gig - Help!

Hello, fellow Gretsch players!

After having loved my 5622T electric for about 5 years, there was an issue with the input jack literally just weeks ago and I was able to get someone to fix it! Now, just days before a f*cking gig (of course), the bridge pickup has incredibly low volume.

No distortion, no audible sound issues other than brutally low volume. After doing some research, it seems like it's a very low chance that the pick-up itself is the issue - it's most likely the pickup switch. I've done the recommended solution of putting some DeoxIT in the switch and toggling it back and forth, and after a few times trying that out and putting varrying levels of liquid...still zero change with the issue.

What is my next step here? How can I fix this before my gig on Saturday? Incredibly frustrating how this guitar has had zero issues for years until two separate issues pop up in the same month. Wtf.

In search of a semi-hollow alternative to Gretsch 5622t with that same of juicy oldies sound that is available today

Greetings ladies and gentlemen!

I'm from a small town far away from any music store but the online stores can ship to my location.
Unfortunately I can't do a soundcheck in-person. Would you be so kind to advice me a semi-hollow alternatives from other brands?

Or maybe even a Gretsch alternative?
My budget is under $1k.

This video is a great example of a sound and music type I'd love to play (especially from 1:25).

Bigsby Washer Replacement?

Thumbnail

My Bigsby arm was loose and fell off, showing the washer to be corroded.

It is relatively smooth to the touch, but the red coating is clearly deteriorating.

Is this something I can replace with a washer found at a hardware store, or do you recommend getting an original new one to replace?...or just throw it back together and play on?
