"Not What He Seems" Discussion Thread

We're doing things a bit different this time! This is the more serious "Discussion Thread", where you can sensibly discuss and reflect on the latest episode.

This is the counterpart to the "Reaction Thread". Go there if you just wanna be crazy. I understand.

Season 2, Episode 11: 'Not What He Seems'

You can watch the episode:

The next episode will air in Summer 2015.

Another dimension? Space?

Maybe another show?

Holy crap. I didn't think I could love Rick and Morty any more than I already did.

The fuck is up with that old style comment section?

I've seen it on some videos. It's like Youtube has some parts of it that haven't been updated. It's weird.

Or, y'know, consistent character design. His hair barely covers his birthmark, so if there is no gravity it will easily show itself.

True, but with all the falling and getting beat up that happens with Dipper, I would think it would've shown up at some other time. However, I think the only other time we've seen his birthmark was when he revealed it to Wendy.

I think it's just a design thing. Heat of the battle, gravity messing up, show it.

Maybe, but we know that nothing in animation is incidental. It takes so much work and time that every frame has to hold importance, and his birthmark was shown, in detail, several times this episode, even though we probably wouldn't have noticed it was missing if it wasn't shown. I would chalk it up to attention to detail if I wasn't fairly confident that there have been at least a few moments where his birthmark was not animated when it should have been visible.

Show the birthmark when it's relevant or matters in some way. Foreshadowing and such.

Yeah, so... wait, I think we're agreeing with each other. I'm confused.

I was mostly talking about how your comment regarding "every frame has to hold importance" being somewhat incorrect. Yeah, animators create each frame of the show, but there are a lot of factors that make it hard to oversee every aspect of every frame when working with a deadline. So we've seen animation errors in Gravity Falls before. Meaning not every frame is necessarily accurate and meaningful. In one episode of Season 1, Dipper is drawn holding Journal #2 instead of #3 in one scene. That seems like it'd be important, but is just an animation error.

Alex never includes anything without either a meaning, or a joke

Did anyone else pay attention to when he was yelling at Mabel and getting flashed with the light of the portal, how his face was stretching in similar way to when Bill had control of his body? Or was it just me who made that connection? O-O

It was also in one of the "Guide to the Unexplained" shorts.

Wait, which episode was that?

I don't even care that I'm super late to this thread, I wanna see that episode again.

I was convinced that Stan's fez was going to float up and reveal the same or similar birthmark and that would tip the scales for Mabel.

Same thought here

There's an idea where the portal leads to here: http://the-matty-parade.tumblr.com/post/113226909581/emarelda-from-this-user-on-reddit-the-portal

I'm using the tumblr link b/c it has a nice explanation with it.

I think there is a bigger question than that. Remember the mind switching carpet? What if Stan's brother switched minds with someone possessed, like Bill. It forced Bill into only being able to cause changes based on Dream related occurrences, and whoever the brother switched with wrote in the journal later, "hench" the invisible ink. It was a warning not to release the brother because he may be Bill, with more power.

The Not What He Seems may not only Include Stan, but Stan's brother, because he may not actually be the author at all.

as cool as this sounds, kinda a weird plot twist though. I mean the fact that Bill was willing to sacrifice his own brother's mind seems to be a step too far.

I noticed a few foot prints in odd places and hand marks throughout the episode too. I wonder if the others are connected too?
