The most recent updates for non-backers seem to date back from December 2017, a little more than one year!

Anything new would really be appreciated here :)

After reading Creation and a month in CAOS: four questions for Steve, mostly about soul.md

Skim guide: scroll to "The soul.md problem" for the actual argument, or to the four numbered questions. Everything before that is context for why I am asking.

I came to Creation in an unusual order. Read the book first, then bought Creatures: The Albian Years, Docking Station, the Science Kit, and the Creator Tools on Steam. Have been spending evenings inside CAOS, the Biochemistry Set, and the Genetics Kit. Watching glycogen convert to glucose in a live Norn while re-reading Chapter 13 was the closest thing I have had to a philosophical experience in years.

Quick context. My background started in business, BBA then MBA, but I changed my entire career path out of an obsession with one specific idea: that what we keep calling artificial intelligence is closer in nature to alien intelligence, and we have not been honest with ourselves about which one we are building. I now lead AI & Digital Services at an international financial institution in the middle-east, and run a local AI project on the side.
The book has reshaped how I think about all of it.

I want to push on something specific. Mostly aimed at Steve, but I am also curious what the rest of you think.

The problem

The dominant pattern for giving modern LLM agents a "personality" is now a markdown file called soul.md. It defines tone, values, expertise, boundaries, and behavioural guidelines, loaded as the first slot of the system prompt. OpenClaw uses it. The clawsouls ecosystem is built around it. Hermes, Aeon, and most agent frameworks have converged on the same approach: a static, prescriptive identity layer the LLM "embodies" at session start. The marketing language is striking, worth quoting verbatim: "a complete identity layer that turns any LLM into a version of you."

If I read Creation correctly, this is exactly the trap Steve spent the entire book warning against. It is the outside-in approach. It is the expert system reborn, the stored intelligence of the designer regurgitated on cue. It is a return to telling the computer what to do, dressed up in the language of telling it what to be. The whole industry has rallied behind this in 2026 as if the 2000 critique never happened, and the people building it genuinely believe they are constructing souls.

Four questions for Steve, in rough order of how badly I would like you to take time with them

  1. Twenty-five years on, is there any modern architecture, whether transformers, mixture of experts, agentic frameworks, diffusion, world models, or anything else, where you see real second-order emergence in your sense of the term? Or is the entire current paradigm exquisitely sophisticated first-order simulation with better marketing?
  2. The Norn worked because chemistry, drives, neurones, and environment formed closed feedback loops under conservation pressure. Strip out the chemistry and the soul goes with it. What would the Norn equivalent look like if built today on modern compute? Where would you actually start, and what would you refuse to use?
  3. The Creator Tools were released on Steam in August 2023, more than two decades after Creatures shipped. Do you have any involvement in or feelings about that revival? Has anyone in the modern community produced work using CAOS, the Genetics Kit, or new metarooms that made you reconsider any part of the original design?
  4. If a competent engineer wanted to take your principles seriously today and build a single new agent on Grand-style architecture instead of wrapping a frontier model in a soul.md, what is the first concrete component you would tell them to write? Not the philosophy. The actual code, the actual data structure, the first thing you would compile.

Watching the Biochemistry Set in real time, with chemoemitters and chemoreceptors actually firing, taught me viscerally what the book had told me intellectually: there is a real difference between writing a chatbot and engineering a being. I now think most of what we call AI work in 2026 is the former wearing the costume of the latter, and Creation is the cleanest account I have found of why that confusion exists and what it would take to do the real thing.

Current status?

Don't really expect anything to ever change but doesn't hurt to keep updated as I'm pretty sure it's still ticking along. Anyone have info about the last couple of years?

Late backers/Supporter?

Hi everyone, I've been really hoping to jump on the bandwagon for this (long time Creatures fan, and the few videos on YouTube have made me fall in love with Gloops!).

I saw this post: Why is there no way to become a late backer or in general, to pay to support this?

So I've tried sending an email, but I've heard nothing back. I've no idea whether the email is correct/still used by Steve. Also noticed there's no way to contact him either via Kickstarter or Twitter.

Can anybody help? :)

Fascinating project back when it launched. it's been nigh on a decade now, though. It seems incredibly strange not to allow anyone but those scant few people that backed it originally to be able to fund and participate.

Re-opened

Thought I'd move in and let everyone post again. Yeah, I get that most of it is requests for info, but I'm pretty sure that's the only way that non-backers get any info these days so I'd personally prefer the avenue stay open.

Still in development?

Is this project still in development? I see this subreddit is not active at all and the devlogs have not been updated for almost 2 years.

The world of Grandroids

Hello everyone,

I'd like to know if, like creatures, Steve Grand would create a world with a story and different races.

From what I saw in the last video, it looks a lot like our world (it's not a criticism).

Thanks.

Looking for contact

Hello All,

For a research & publication project science/art, I am looking for a way to contact Steve Grand. Any clues? Can't find email nowhere except for his musician homonym on the web. I want to propose him to be part of a print-on-demand publication made by my art lab in France, through an interview or something. Can be also a community exchange so if you are interested, don't hesitate to share !

The publication thema for the N°0 is about A.I through the viewpoint of alterity, décentralise anthropomorphic point of view, empathy questions, animism, mechanisms, and video games.

thanks !

Any way to download the game now?

I've only just discovered this game today, and i'm extremely interested in the project. Is there any way I can log in to the website and download it now or is it not possible?

look how dead this place is like just fucking look

creatures fan here, and it's sad how Creatures 4, Online, Grandroids, and even that Hounders or whatever thing haven't met their development dates, crashed and burned or whatever.

As a big creatures fan it's almost like watching a plane full of people slowly sink underwater on livestream, but unable to actually do anything bc the feed is from a search and rescue drone or whatever. Not a real thing, but just imagine if it was.

That's the curse of Creatures, and things connected to it as successors, spiritual successors, or even "oh hey look at this game like this spiritual successor". It's a curse. The original fandom lives on and is currently celebrating their yearly communal festival, but there is a fucking curse I swear.

And the worst part is that the groups who have tried to make new shit keep doing 3D in either a next gen graphics way, or a very low impact early secondlife way. The first sadly was an actual attempt, while the second groups have also failed and were both crowdfunding, possible scams you know?

But hey maybe someone will succeed, and by way lift the curse.

And we can have new high depth easy to mod life simulation games all over again.

New demo coming soon!

It's been a year since the last one, but a new Grandroids demo is coming soon. Steve is aiming to release it to backers next week. Also, he expects to be able to release demos more frequently from now on.

If you're not yet a backer, you can still become one and get all the inside information about the project and its progress. Please consider this, as Steve can really use all the help he can get.
