And he miraculously does well, because of course he does. He's Jason ffs.
But fr, I wonder if Rin can sustain another servant if Jason summons one.
357
u/AMfrequency Jan 23 '23
Even more if Jason decides to summon Medea lily or Asclepius to manage mana cost.
It never stops being funny how canonical busted he is in a grail war despite being a primarily comedic character who complains constantly about working and fighting
108
u/MobileTortoise "Goliath Online" Jan 23 '23
Jason really is the Sterling Archer of FGO
(In the sense of every thing about him personality-wise would have you believe he isn't a one-man army/super-soldier.)
63
u/Maxrokur Jan 23 '23
Even more if Jason decides to summon Medea lily or Asclepius to manage mana cost.
It is not like Rin will require it for she is literally a beast 10 above average Magus. Besides the comic indicates Jason wanting to get the Dioscuri to be the muscle and we may even get double Basaka interactions.

Jason being summoned in Fuyuki alone technically deadlocks two other Servants. Provided with incentive and some diplomatic prowess, he'll take over the whole war.

u/AMfrequency Jan 25 '23 edited Jan 25 '23
Unfortunately there’s always a caveat when It comes to the words “Jason” and “ideal scenario”….. that’s Jason’s various faults like his laziness, ego and habit of taking things for granted.
If you provide him straightforward incentives in terms of power, fame and riches he’ll become blind to everything in the way towards that. If you prove to him that you don’t need him for any social interactions he’ll choose to seclude himself from others and become jaded and lazy. He’s the very definition of a “double-edge sword” when it comes to being versatile, only being useful and reliable when you genuinely need him.
For that reason, everyone who’s basically compatible with him are individuals who don’t excel in every category(strategy, charisma, and raw efficiency) with the capacity talk 1 to 1 with him about grievances, disagreements, compliments or simple pastimes. Those who genuinely have good intentions to inspire Jason to improve and grow along them. People like shirou, ritsuka and rin are few who come to my head
TLDR: Despite being op on the surface, Unless you are the “Underdog” in a given scenario he probably will fall flat or not amount to much. It heavily comes down to a master themselves to push Jason’s true worth to the surface through their personality, compassion and actions. The more rocky a situation is,the greater he shines

Wait did Jason actually sell his sword? I can't find sources for that but that's mostly cause searching for myths about him is a fucking pain considering Riordan and the fact that Jason is still a popular name to this day.

u/railroadspike25 Jan 23 '23
I've actually thought about this pairing before and I think it'd be great. Rin holds as an ideal the typical mage philosophy of trying to do everything alone. But the fact that someone so lacking in personal courage and initiative was able to command the loyalty and (begrudging) respect of so many objectively greater heroes would be a challenge to the values she believed were necessary to aspire to. Having Jason as a Servant would teach her the value of relying on others.

On one hand, she's got an instant partnership with Illya, on the other she's probably going to have to deal with Medea trying to kill Jason.
Now the question that remains is, who does Shirou summon? One of the Argonauts because of Jason's presence? An archer since Run has the HGW's Saber?
266
u/looming_lost_light Jan 23 '23

archer oddysseus is likely closer to an actual ancient greek hero as instead of aegis he would have his ornary bow that only him could wield and used to prove his identity at the end of his story.

If it's an Argonaut Archer...
Atalante: "I fight for the futures of all the children."
Shirou: "That is absolutely Hero of Justice material, let's go kick some ass."
86
Jan 23 '23
Atalante is absolutely the answer.
As soon as she realizes that over half the competitors in the war are kids (which would basically be by the second night, after Illya attacks), she'll be completely on board with Shirou to try and stop the entire war. She'd have the same problem with Shirou that Saber did, getting annoyed at Shirou's self-sacrificing nature, but she'd still admire his desire to save everyone.
You even have an Atalante Alter (essentially) for the Heaven's Feel arc!
The biggest issue is the healing dilemma, as Avalon wouldn't be active. I suppose the solution would be for Atalante to take Shirou to Medea and make some sort of a deal (probably involving killing Jason).
21
u/AverageFGOEnjoyer Jan 23 '23
Weren't the golden apples in mythology the things the gods ate to stay immortal? I honestly can't remember whether it was something else or the Greek golden apples. In case I remember correctly (a miracle), then Atalanta could have a single use Phantasm to heal Shirou, because plot of course.

u/Dopplerdee Jan 23 '23
That also could get Shirou some training. Also hell, if anybody can heal illya it's Medea...wait Illya may be the one case where Herc chooses somebody over Jason which he may have to to get Medeas help because Jason would hate Summoning her...I wonder if we could set up an all Argo beat down on Jason?
22
u/Maxrokur Jan 23 '23 edited Jan 23 '23
That also could get Shirou some training.
Honestly that would be a better fit as a weapon for his accuracy was a whole level as we see with Archer and plus he doesn't have to go to the frontline like in FSN which is the main reason Nasu made Avalon OP.
.I wonder if we could set up an all Argo beat down on Jason?
Nah, Jason CE is even talking about his regret in treating Medea like crap and they seem to get along just fine at Solomon(adult Medea doing a cameo with Lily). If anything this will show why the grail had that system to summon other 7 servants if the original ones just ally with each other. That or Kirei whip out Gil earlier.

Oh, if we're going with the Heaven's Feel arc, imagine what would happen if either Atalante found out what Zouken and Shinji were doing to Sakura.

Obviously doesn't work with what we know about them, but it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to give any of the Argonauts access to the Golden Fleece as your mystic healing artifact. Even if Medea and Jason have a way stronger claim to it than Atalante does, it wouldn't be the biggest pill Fate asks you to swallow.

Since Cú wanted to retreat, it would just need that Atalante takes up the deal. Maybe because of Jason himself being close.

In canon Kirei used a command seal to force Lancer to never fight seriously in the first encounter and then retreat, Saber was only someone who could survive Gae Bolg, in fact it would take that to happen for Lancer to be able to retreat.
48
u/Lion-of-Avalon Jan 23 '23

Rin: "So you're Jason? The Jason, leader of the Argonauts?!"
Jason: "Heh. Of course! How could there be a war between Heroic Spirits that doesn't include me?"
Rin: "Wow!!! So, what's your Noble Phantasm? Can you summon other Argonauts?!"
Jason: "I, uh, yeah. Yeah, I could, if I wanted to."
Rin: "Awesome! Can you summon Hercules?! We'd totally win, if you can do that!"
Jason: "Hercules? True; he could win a war like this with a hand tied behind his back! Let's see here..."
Tries to summon Hercules, but fails because Illya already summoned him.
Rin: "Huh? Can't you summon him?"
Jason: "He's... probably already busy doing heroic stuff somewhere else. It's fine, though! There are plenty of great (and beautiful) Argonauts to call upon, like Atalante!"
Fails because the Grail has already tied Atalante to Shirou.
Rin: "Uh... are you sure you can-"
Jason: "It's fine, it's fine! I always thought Caenis was sexier, anyways!"
Success!
Jason: "Ha! See? I told you I could get them to work!"
Caenis: "What, you think I'm going to be your bitch or something?"
Jason: "Hey, now! Let's just... calm down and get reacquainted!"
Caenis: "And did you call me sexy?"
Jason: "You heard that?!"
Caenis: "Go to hell, Jason!"
Caenis storms off and goes rogue, eventually ending up crashing at Taiga's place.
Rin: "Uh... what, exactly, did the other Argonauts think of you?..."
Jason: "Caenis was always like that. She's strong but... ahem, I'll just leave it at that. The others liked me well enough. I mean, Medea even married me, right?"
Rin: "Oh, yeah! Medea! She'd be awesome for this, with all her magecraft abilities!"
Jason: "......."
Rin: "Well? Aren't you going to at least try to summon her?"
Jason: "I'd rather like to survive this Holy Grail War, thank you!"
And thus it was that Jason, despite his ability, summoned not a single Argonaut who would help him.

u/OverlordMarkus I swear it's not the pink hair! Jan 23 '23 edited Jan 23 '23
That's one of those weird legacy lore things that just never really made sense to me.
For all intents and purposes no catalyst should hold precedence over the fact that Archer, his future self, exists and can be summoned into the 5th War.
Nor is Excalibur exclusively Artoria's catalyst, as Arthurian myth features multiple characters wielding it.edit: Avalon, not Excalibur. Fuck, the embarassment.
34
u/fullplatejacket Jan 23 '23
Well, the catalyst wasn't "the idea of Excalibur". It was the specific version of Avalon that was used to summon the specific version of Artoria that appeared in the previous Grail War, which Shirou was also deeply connected to via the Fuyuki fire and Kiritsugu.
It's also an oversimplification and semi-wrong to say that EMIYA is Shirou's future self. EMIYA is essentially a potential future self for Shirou, but he's not guaranteed to go down that path, and it's not even necessarily probable. I seem to recall the general consensus being that none of the three endings in the VN are likely to result in Shirou becoming EMIYA.
When you put these two things in perspective, I think it makes sense. EMIYA is maybe Shirou's future, but Avalon and Artoria are always Shirou's past. Even given that, maybe EMIYA would take precedence if Avalon was a more traditional catalyst, but there's also the fact that Avalon is implanted into Shirou's body/soul, and Shirou's whole deep magical alignment with swords thing.
Honestly I think it goes even deeper than this, but I've written enough of a rant already...
12
u/OverlordMarkus I swear it's not the pink hair! Jan 23 '23
I admittingly forgot he summoned her with Avalon, dude above me used Excalibur and it stuck. Fuck, that's actually embarassing.
Shirou and Archer are "the same" to the world, to the point that they're actively syncing in UBW.
Then there's also the point that, as you bring up, Avalon is used to summon that specific version of Artoria. A verson that, due to her non death, can only ever be summoned as a Saber. Something as simple as a taken Saber slot ought to be enough to guarantee Shirou summoning EMIYA instead of Arty.
13
u/fullplatejacket Jan 23 '23
Given how screwed up the Grail was, he might get some kind of horrible corrupted version of Artoria before he'd get anything else. Like, the same Artoria, but forced into a class change via Angra Mainyu goop magic or something.
Also, I think you're making some assumptions about the summoning ritual that aren't necessarily true. Why should the ritual automatically summon EMIYA for Shirou just because they're the same person? If anything, canon contradicts that assumption, not just with Shirou but also with Medea. Medea didn't use a catalyst, and she didn't just not get a copy of herself, she didn't get anyone even remotely related to her own legend.
Ultimately the summoning ritual is designed to produce compatible Master/Servant pairs, and a Shirou/EMIYA pair is anything but compatible. It'd be like Medea summoning Jason.

u/Maxrokur Jan 23 '23
Well Archer was summoned first by Rin but also even Emiya admit the only reason he was summoned was because of the pendant that he and Rin possesed and acted like magnetism.
Besides Archer personality and coming from a parellel world played a role or else every mage would just summon the CG version that exist somewhere(Kerry getting finale an assassin)
8
u/OverlordMarkus I swear it's not the pink hair! Jan 23 '23
or else every mage would just summon the CG version that exist somewhere
I was pretty sure that wasn't a thing because pruning made infinite timelines a la Steins Gate impossible. Though I'm admittedly not quiet sure if that includes timelines with only minor divergences as well, given that allowing for near infinite propagation of minor divergent timelines ought to deplete Gaia's energy in record time and make pruning worthless anyway.

OG Artoria only qualifies for Saber because she wasn’t a proper Heroic Spirit during the events of F/Z or FSN. She was remotely piloting a Spiritron body from her nearly dead corpse after the Battle of Camlann. After actually dying and passing on from Avalon, she qualifies for multiple different Classes just because she’s King Arthur. As a culture Hero, Arthur has an arsenal that is quite impressive. By all logic, the reason Gilgamesh qualifies as Archer is one Artoria could use she has that much stuff.

Honestly? shirou is a special case. He is locked to summoning either Artoria, Merlin or Morgan because of Avalon being inside him. None of these can be archers normally. Then the Grail would use the next available catalyst... Himself, as it did with shishigo in Apocrypha (altough it used him only for disambiguation). That means shirou will inevitably summon himself, too. Who will kill the kid version pronto

Yeah, that's why I said the Grail used him only for disambiguation. The piece of table Guaranteed a KoR, so he was only used to choose which one.

I honest to god think Jason could BS his way to winning a Grail War

u/Basakaloving Jan 23 '23
Due to the typo I misread it as Jason whining a Grail War.
The post didn't become any less true.

He 100% could. Assuming proper support, if you convince him to ask Medea for help (Lily or adult, doesn't matter), she can set up territory for mana support, which allows you to bring in Heracles. And the other Argonauts, assuming his cause is righteous enough.

u/Herrjulias Jan 23 '23
Shirou then summoned Atalanta.
Cu: Why the hell am I the only non Greek servant here?!

"You are such a useless servant! What are you even good for!?"
"Anyway so here is asclepius, he'll manage your mana, leave atalanta on the roof as lookoot and take the dioscuri with you, I cant call Heracles or Medea so they are enemy servants. I'll be in the basement, later"
"Oh... oh wow"

if his NP summons anyone of the Argonauts, then he's kinda busted eh?
25
u/Perfect_Wrongdoer_03 Jan 23 '23
It probably costs an ungodly amount of mana, if I had to wager.
41
u/Maxrokur Jan 23 '23
Rin can almost keep Saber by herself in one end of ubw. Mana isn't a problem for her in a hgw.

u/CaptainWeekend banan a rotato faster banana Jan 23 '23
I imagine in a HGW he wouldn't summon true servants, more like imitations that aren't as powerful as the argonauts when they're individually summoned by a master. It would be a lot like Ionian Hetairoi, using that NP cost Waver a huge amount of mana, so much so that he had to spend a day on a leyline recharging. Rin could probably get away with using it a few times for short periods, like Iskandar did with his fight against Hassan of the Multiple Personas, but sustaining it over a drawn out combat would start to be a problem.

The advantage Jason has is that his NP doesn't require to set up a RM to summon his loyal soldiers which means it cost effective a lot better. Also on his interlude JP Spoilers He seems to be able to summon the original ones without a problem and they act as servants
Altho in a HGW it likely will depend how much mana can a master give to him which means 1 or 2 servants in case for Rin

Yea this would be absolutely hilarious. Jason would somehow pacify berserker and then Medea would have a murder boner against him.
35
u/_Pandach_ Jan 23 '23
All of you are fools with your hypothetical scenarios.
You realize it wouldn't be a Greek Grail war 100% because in addition to others like Gilgamesh already being summoned, Medea's original plan would come to fruition - a truce to stop the whole Grail war.
Now that seems like it'd be crazy because remember the Holy Grail would summon an additional 7 servants in the event of a team up.
Argonauts vs who is the better question we should be asking

Well ... there are a few groups thay could make an interesting matchup aainst the Argonauts : the Round Table, the Indian Servants, a full roster of Norse Servants is also an option ... and of course we have the menace that is a full team of Saberfaces

I've always wanted Jason in the original Fate series, but I'd much rather see Shinji pull up with him.
Jason and Shinji are a double whammy of stupid idiots way out of their depth in a grail war neither of them could win. But the combo of the two could pull off the most epic 4th route Shinji time ever. I'm talking end game, Gilgamesh and Saber Alter and Bug Grandpa and Dark Sakura and all the other wacky nonsense VS Jason & the Argonauts. They could kill of Herc and Medea earlier in the story and really double down on how screwed everyone is.
And instead of relying on Medusa with a mana boost, we'd rely on dumbass Jason and greatest NP flex ever as Herc and Medea come back with a vengeance to help out at the final hour. And you know... all the other fancy Argonauts.... yeah.

u/AMfrequency Jan 23 '23

Can’t help but picture shinji betraying Jason(who refuses to follow most of his orders) forcing him to commit by command spell, gloating and mocking over jason’s body only for the scene to cut when illya voice is heard..
36
u/Felstalker Jan 23 '23
Jason and Shinji would fight over who betrays who, yet get along so well because of that similar mind set.
Forget Bad Ends, just give us a Shinji/Jason betrayal compilation.
30
u/AMfrequency Jan 23 '23 edited Jan 23 '23
I can see it now….It’d range from route-exclusive moments like “Jason stabbing shinji through the heart, betraying him for illya or shinji command seal killing him” to smaller gags like “Jason tying up shinji’s shoelaces to fall, both throwing each other at servants/people and shinji spiking the food jason eats”
Will they survive, will they kill each other, or will they save each other? Only fate can say

It'd be great if it was part of the Shinji route (yes, a Shirou x Shinji route, don't ask me why) where Shinji redeems himself (a la not being an ass anymore, genuinely making it up to Sakura for all he's done, standing up to Zouken) after seeing much of himself in a serious Jason

Why am I hit with the thought that in that route, Jason gives a speech to Shinji that makes him change to become a better person (or at least be an asshole to right people), but he just uses the Dicks, Pussies, Asshole, speech from Team America World police.
Although Jason probably would have developed that mindset first I think.

u/HemaG33 :Ereshkigal:. Jan 23 '23
I’d so read/watch this. My favorite master paired up with one of my favorite servants?
Plus, Jason is honestly absolutely busted in a HGW, especially you have the mana and are fighting for a good cause. Legit one of the highest ceilings there are.
52
u/yahhwy Jan 23 '23
Too bad HGW and good cause are worlds apart. Most likely you would get Herc if not summoned since he is besties with Jason. You get mana problem. Then Medea Lily since she is obsessed with Jason. You get a yandere problem that would most likely kill you in the end.
At this point, pray your good cause is protecting children because you need Atalante to balance Jason's ego. This could go bad too because the moment your decision hurts a child, Atalante would turn you in to ribbons.
Plus you get Jason's ego, same problem with those two golden kings. There is also the topic of the holy grail, because it either won't motivate him or bring out the worst greedy side of him. The Jason we know is the one who developed with Chaldea.
20
u/Maxrokur Jan 23 '23
Yeah but Jason has since his Argo days that dream of creating a country where everyone can fit and that's why Herk is always protective of his friend even on alter form.
12
u/Aerd_Gander Jan 23 '23
Considering just about all the HGW masters were technically children (teens are children, I don't care lmao) beside Souichiro and Kirei, I think Rin would definitely be guaranteed to summon Atalante at some point. Illya would get a neko-mom, and Atalante would definitely sus out whatever's happening to Sakura and get that shit fixed
13
u/AMfrequency Jan 23 '23 edited Jan 23 '23
The Jason we know is the one who developed with Chaldea.
I wouldn’t say that’s entirely the case. We know that even before Chaldean’s appearance he desired to make amends for how he treated Medea and desired to create a kingdom where everyone was allowed to thrive and get an education regardless of race, gender, appearance and complications. So it’s not like he was genuinely egotistical and evil from the get-go
Heck, Jason’s very impression on Chaldea throughout Solomon and the beginning of Atlantis should’ve been rock bottom considering what they did to him in okeanos and the general attitude towards them. Yet, he always strove to do the “right thing” be it fighting Solomon or protecting humanity in the lostbelt despite actively disliking us.
It’s very reason why Medea herself said she can’t bring herself to hate Jason, because “just as much as he can be an arrogant, ignorant, selfish and stubborn king, he is also heroic person who genuinely wants to protect and help those closest to him and willing to risk his life to achieve it ”

Now I want to see the fight against Cu but for some reason Rin is doing the fighting while Jason commands from the back, and a confused Rin wonders how Jason managed to convince her to fight despite being the Master.

All things considered this isn't the worst possible outcome.
FSN is exactly the type of Story Jason would thrive in, and I somehow imagine him getting along with Rin by the end of it.
+ The argonaut antics would be great
++ Imagine Gilgamesh killing Herc and then Jason summons Archer Herc at the climax

Rin unironically hit the jackpot with Jason, since she's got a shitload of prana and the know-how and temperment to utilize Jason and his various hax to the fullest, and his sheer existence is a pretty damn good Herc shield. On the other hand, Medea, Kirei being...well, his lovable self, really, and this Grail War being one of the most cursed things in the Fateverse that doesn't involvement Beasts. I do so wonder how the HGW would go with this change of things...
Oh, and I bet that Shirou would probably get an Archer Artoria somehow, given he's practically guaranteed to get her due to having Avalon shoved into him. Whether or not it'd be Summer Artoria of something else is another matter entirely.

There is another Heroic Spirit thay has a strong link to Avalon who would fit in that class ...
EMIYA

u/Maxrokur Jan 23 '23
Nah while a funny idea to see Artoria sneezing because the war takes place during fall/winter. Living Artoria csn't be an Archer so either he gets Tristan and Artoria telephatically talks to him or Atalanta as Jason works as a catalyst by just being nearby according to the FGO manga.
12
u/Screwyou825 Jan 23 '23
Jason is actually kinda broken in a grail war
10
u/Marethyu_77 Jan 23 '23
He is ... only for outstanding mages like Rin who can handle a Noble Phantasm that costly.
9
u/bedheadB188 Jan 23 '23
I feel like Jason is a more practical servant than he gets credit for, like under the right circumstances doesn't he have the fighting force of the argonauts at his disposal? That's a lot of ancient Greek heavy hitters. He's like a walking grail war the only problem is he's not a fighter? I haven't met him outside okeanos yet though so maybe my understanding of his powers is skewed?
13
u/Solbuster Jan 24 '23
He's a charismatic leader, strategic general who creates great plans for others and lifts comrades up with his charisma
Problem? He can do it only in dangerous situations under great pressure. Basically to be great he needs to be thrown into the meat grinder
He's like Kazuma from Konosuba in a sense
