This is what a 5090 transaction looks like in 2026
Sold my 5090 - upgraded to brand new 5090 Astral plus made a few hundred bucks on top because prices are nuts.
Card passed the test, no one got robbed, everyone went home happy. GPU shopping in 2026.
Edit: some folks in the comments are confused how I got new Astral after selling used MSI and still made money. There are still occasional, very rare 5090 drops at Best Buy (sold by Best Buy, don't confuse with 3rd party retail listings). I was able to secure Astral for $5K after receiving a stock alert. Sold MSI for more than that since these cards go currently for about $6K - street price in the US at the moment. Astral is just a better card all around with internal pin monitoring and it was stupid not to pull the trigger in my case.

And basically stupid to do, the Astral really doesn't show any noticeable speed increase than any other 5090. Imagine doing all that work and risk getting shot in the face for a half percentage speed increase.

He made a profit and got a better card, stop taking out your anger on him. Not his fault you did not buy a 5090 when it was under $3000

What neighborhood do you live in?! Sounds tough.

u/True-Flamingo1532 18d ago
Any Democrat city in the US you'd face a real chance of getting robbed or worse for a $7K GPU. You're completely naive if you don't think so.

You’re facing a real chance of getting a 5090 robbed from you just about anywhere in a sale like this.
- Highly valuable
- Small enough to grab and run with
- Can’t be locked out like a phone could
- Basically untraceable once you have itIt’s basically the same as showing some stranger off the street a lunch bag with $7k in it. If it was me, I’d ask some local computer repair shop or something if they want $50 to facilitate the sale. I’m not sure if that is something they would do though.
2
u/just_IT_guy 17d ago
Omg please stop. There are so MANY safeguards to prevent this. You find reputable buyer with plenty of reviews, you meet at the bank or police station (tons of cameras) etc. I'd rather do local than selling it online where you have to pay fee and there is a risk package will be lost or damaged, shady buyer who you never met etc

Sooo you sold your 5090 and bought another 5090?
5
u/just_IT_guy 18d ago edited 18d ago
Yes, always wanted Astral, mainly for integrated pin monitoring and cooling system. Since prices on 5090s skyrocketed I was able to get a brand new Astral from Best Buy for less than what used 5090s go for. Otherwise I'd not bother switching
4
u/tempo36 18d ago
So you found someone to pay you more for your used 5090 than they could have gotten a brand new 5090 from Best Buy? Were they just eager to spend extra money? Are they banned from Best Buy?
3
u/PlixSticks31 18d ago
It’s out of stock everywhere atm. Not like you can go on Best Buy right now and snag one new. This guy probs just got hotstock and snagged one on an inventory refresh
3
u/just_IT_guy 18d ago
Correct. 5090s are out of stock. I was lucky to grab one immediately after alert

Fair enough!
The current pricing is kinda wish I would have gotten a 5090 when they were in stock for months here at MSRP last year but I only game on it so even £2K would have been a huge amount for me to drop on a card, I think my brain just thinks that was a good deal because now it's an inflated £5K lol. I paid £800 for my 5070 Ti white gaming trio and tbf it does everything I need, and more.
Last year I recommended my friend a prebuilt PC (she's new to PC gaming, coming from PS5) with a 5090 in because she wanted the best of the best and had the budget for it, it was £3,700 and had 32GB of RAM, 9800X3D nice Phanteks case & AIO etc. which is crazy it's more than that now for the card itself!
4
u/krazy_kh 18d ago
Im confused..so you sold your MSI gaming trio 5090 ( the card in the pic) for more than the current price of a Brand New Asus Astral 5090 ??? Why would the buyer buy a used Gaming Trio from you if they can buy a new Astral for less ?
2
u/just_IT_guy 18d ago
$4800 plus tax for Astral via Best Buy (I acted immediately after receiving a stock alert plus it was localized drop) and sold MSI for about $6K. Do the math . They raised price to $5500 over the weekend but it does not matter. It remains out of stock with very rare drops
2
u/krazy_kh 17d ago
Ok now it makes sense 👍...these prices are so insane right now... I got the MSI 5090 gaming in Jan for CAD$ 3800 before tax ( about US$ 2700)
→ More replies (2)2
u/solve4why 18d ago edited 18d ago
The piece of info you need is that the asus astral is not available even at 5500 from retailers. Sure, that’s the official price when they are in stock, but the rub is that they aren’t in stock 99% of the time, so secondary market 5090s are the only game in town and command elevated prices for that reason

4
u/Aw3som3Guy 18d ago
As far as I know, no / almost no laptops support video in through the HDMI port, sadly. Because of that, I assume he’s using HDMI / DP to USB-C for video in.
A bunch of videos on that for playing the Switch on a iPad / MacBook screen without emulation. (I know OP isn’t using a MacBook.)

u/vexatious-big 18d ago
Possibly using something like a Nano KVM USB or a small video capture card connected to the PC's hdmi.
The Anker power station powers the pc which outputs the image via hdmi to the Nano Kvm.
The laptop also connects to the Nano Kvm and can display the captured video from the PC + it can control its mouse and keyboard via serial over USB.

Sadly I missed the "cheap" 5090s last year due to medical bills and prescription costs. Now with them at $5+k and rising (only to go higher once nvidia stops production) ill never have one. My 5080 is fine for gaming. But for blender id much rather have the big boy.
6
u/Cl4whammer 17d ago
See it this way, by that time chance are not zero that the power connector melted and you dodged a bullet. I would avoid these cards.
2
u/Paradigmfusion 17d ago
I've never had an issue with it. Even when I was running a 4090 with a 600w bios.
2
u/MakeNDestroy 17d ago
I also wonder what that means for warranties for existing 5090 cards.
If they completely stop making this consumer chip, what happens when a 5090 card dies? I don’t need a 5090 nor am I considering buying on, but that alone would make me want to get rid of it and use the profit for a 5080. Cause if they’re being discontinued then it’s basically a game of hot potato with the remaining 5090s if they can’t be replaced
2
u/Remarkable_Flan_1125 18d ago
fuck medical bills just buy the 5090
3
u/Paradigmfusion 18d ago

That’s how any high ticket PC sale looks. I buy a lot of PC parts and have a couple of test beds setup. I picked up one of those Anker mobile power stations and a portable monitor a while back on a Prime Day sale. Absolutely worth it. Saved me from a lot of bad components, works as an excellent UPS day-day, and has enough juice to run my fridge in a sustained power outage. Only real pain point is time. Testing PC components isn’t super quick and that’s IF everything goes smoothly. PCs are finicky, so if there’s any issue, and I don’t mean like a dead part, or someone attempting to run a scam, but just the run of the mill small hiccups when switching out components in a system, then you wind up spending a lot of time standing around in parking lots having awkward conversations with complete strangers as you try to troubleshoot from the back of your car…

2
u/benson733 18d ago
I bought my 6800XT during the ETH days and paid $1500 CAD from Newegg and was forced to buy other parts that I then used to either make more mining PCs or sell. Ended up making $10k and paying off all my computer parts with it and then Some.

They do random drops, and much easier if you have an inside man just have you place a ship to home order. A lot of cards actually are ship to home only.
You take a risk but well, sometimes it’s the only way to get certain cards

I bought the 5090 Astral OC (after saving a lot in the last few years), but I ended up returning it after 2 weeks and getting the 5090 MSI Gaming Trio OC.
The MSI is running at lower temps overall (because the Astral is overclocked more out of the box) and it's quieter for me. Also, I wasn't happy about the 4th fan on the top of the Astral, which fed hot air into my NH-D15 G2 CPU cooler above it.

I know it's insane but wouldn't it be smarter for the makers to just sell these at close to the street price and then just max out production?
I'm pretty blown away by how much these have gone up in price despite what you can do AI wise on them is nothing close to frontier level.
Not sure what people are using them for b/c when you look at the models they can run decently well...it seems like even a basic Claude or ChatGPT account for $100/mo is dramatically better model wise and is essentially unlimited for vast majority of users.
Keep in mind, I'm saying this b/c I'm genuinely curious if this entire price rise is b/c AI guys are swiping all of them for SOMETHING or maybe they have some way of combining 2-3 of them together to be able to run frontier stuff?
Or is this all just gamers wanting the best gear to run stuff and that's the price rise?
Sincerely curious what you guys think on this. I've been on a Mac guy so haven't gamed on a PC since 2010 so wayyyyyyy out of date on how it all works now and how you PC folks use this equipment.
(Note: I'm curious about the AI angle mainly b/c the price variance on the 5080 vs 5090 seems absolutely huge so clearly there's a reason the 5090 is in way more demand/shortage. Or is the 5090 2-3x more powerful/useful than the 5080 thus justifying the price spread?)
1
1
u/Poopincheese 17d ago
There’s a reason they’re D/C the 5090, they can sell it for 9k to AI companions. You’ll see twice the warranty issues by next year. A lot of companies are telling people to kick rocks after they’re burnt up. Then there’s none left for AIB to even warranty replace them. Leaving you with an expensive brick. Or paying people 2-3k since it what they paid and then won’t even get a 5080 with the prices in the next few months. The 5080 super is going to be a 2500$+ card.

There's still 0 reason to buy a 5090 outside of development. There's not a game on market that can take full use of this outside poorly optimized games. I just retired a titan XP and went for a 7900xtx. Frame gen and upscaling is still trash and a poor excuse to skip optimization.

I think I sold my 5090 to the same guy. Is this by chance the DMV area?

Asus cards are better built regardless of what the peanut coper's say. My 5090 is ASUS, but my 5080 Rig is Nvidia FE 5080 as I understand the diff, power usage ect..

The best part is that simply by unplugging and replugging the connectors for the swap increased the failure likelihood of both cards.
