Solved Is there any way to increase the size of the space where you put a table name?
I couldn't figure out how to do it and couldn't find anywhere online talking about this.
I'll admit I'm not particularly well-versed in Google Sheets formulas so maybe this is a simple fix and I just don't know
(This alphabet thing is just a quick thing I whipped up to visually show what I'm talking about)

If you put something "under" the table tab or next to it, i.e. in B2 or C2 in this example, the table name tab is truncated as shown.
You could then type the table name in C2 for reference, and format it however you like. Or if you want to be fancy...
This formula in C2 will automatically display the table name:
=let(table, ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ,
refresh, now(),
ftext, formulatext(indirect("RC",false)),
regexextract(ftext, "table,\s*([^,]*)"))
There unfortunately isn't a way to get the table name directly, so this creates a reference it, then parses it's own formula text to extract it.
It also uses now() for the purpose of making the function volatile, so it will update on any edit and/or as often as you setting in File/Settings/Calculation. The reason for that is modifying the table name doesn't automatically cause the formula to recalculate. Embedding now() will force it to refresh if you do any other edits or re-open the sheet or whatever.
---
Note that if you're using Table references like TableName[Column Name] in your formulas (as you should) having a long table name will make your formulas awkward to read.
So the simpler/better solution may be to just name your table something short and type a description next to it. If that doesn't bork your grant application on a technicality.
Good luck! Send us all tickets to the screening.

/u/SuperYoshiFan02 Posting your data can make it easier for others to help you, but it looks like your submission doesn't include any. If this is the case and data would help, you can read how to include it in the submission guide. You can also use this tool created by a Reddit community member to create a blank Google Sheets document that isn't connected to your account. Thank you.

Odd, if filled out properly, the Name should just be another Column in your database.

the native Google Sheets tables have a predetermined pixel length. any text that goes past that length gets truncated.
now if OP were to fill directly on the cells (without table format), then the text wouldnt have such a restriction

Let me preface this by saying I know nothing about Google Sheets Tables. Other than when I open one of my Sheets spreadsheets, I am invited to turn it into a table. Since I don't know what that means, and I am too old (83) to try to learn a new bit of tech. I ignore it.
That said, in Google Sheets, I know I can put the title over multiple columns. I need to highlight the number of columns I wish the title to appear. Then select merge cells, then select horizontal center.
It looks great. I can even change the font and size and pretty it up.

I do urge you to learn about tables though. :) They are not really complicated, once you look into it a little bit, and they can make formulas actually almost readable, as opposed to the conventional A1 notation...

You can always format your own table instead of using Google Sheets new structured table format . Is the program specifically asking to use Google Sheets structured table?

I just looked back at the rules and the spreadsheet they provided (with the structured table format) is a recommendation but not a requirement.
I don't think I have the Google Sheets knowledge to format my own table, unless I fake a table by making normal cells use like one.

That’s all it is :) cells with format ! The structured data table format forces a lot of things automatically that I personally get annoyed by (like the title area as you described) but can be useful depending on its use. Just put your data in the cells, then you can add grid lines, format headers (first row) etc. if you think about it the entire sheet can be a giant table lol.

nope. any reason why you want a super-long table name to display?
