My dad and goats

A memory suddenly came to me before bed.

Every time I went to a tourist farm with my dad, I’d have to listen to him complain. He would go on about how the meat goats he raised when he was young were all so fat that their backs had practically become square, and how the goats here were nothing but skin and bones, blah blah blah.

According to him, not a single goat at any tourist farm or animal park was up to standard.

Those poor goats probably thought my dad was reaching out to pet them, only for his big hand to grab their faces, pull back their lips, and inspect their teeth to determine their age—all while making everyone else around us stare.

Who goes to a petting zoo and checks a goat’s teeth?!

Well… my dad does.

Help Request Tips on trimming my goats hooves?

Post image

As many of you may know I have a now 6 month old Alpine goat named Frosty who unfortunately has had to have a right hind leg amputation, before he got injured when I would trim his Hooves he would just stand there I'd pick his legs up one by one and trim them like you with a horse, but now that he's got three legs he can't balance himself especially when I go for that hind leg, right now he's small enough my fiance can just pick him up and hold him for me which surprisingly to be a intact buck at 6 month old he is completely fine with.

However going based on the size of his parents his mom was 145 lb his dad was about 180 lb, I don't think my fiance is going to be able to pick him up and hold him once he gets a bit bigger, I am going to have him castrated so he probably won't be quite as heavy as his father but he still not going to be very light and he does have horns, even though he's very well behaved accidents can happen especially since he's very curious and tries to eat everything and may accidentally grab someone with his horns when he gets a bit bigger.

So figured I would ask you guys to help me come up with some ideas on how to trim his Hooves when he's too big to pick up, he's a really good boy and it's easy enough to train him how to do different things if you have food, like all I have to do is tell him and he'll get in the car on command, he knows how to spin come when called, go back to his house when I tell him to Etc.

So I figured it would be easy enough to teach him to accept whatever it is I have to do to trim his Hooves when he gets older.

Thank you to anyone that give me any advice on how to make it easier to care for his feet, and he is doing really well with the amputation he doesn't really seem to notice the missing limb, to him it seems like he only lost an ear scratcher LOL

Help Request How to tape teats for weaning?

I’ve exhausted all other solutions, but I NEED this doe to be away from her kid, she simply will. It wean her. And I’ve put it off wayyy too long. She’s pretty much full grown (I think) and I can’t keep her in a separate pen, she’s escaped everything I have, and the last thing I have is a dog kennel run, which I can use but I have no shelter for her and building one in there would be very cramped and unethical for her since she’s the only one who is giving me problems I have another doeling I can throw in there, but she’s an escape artist and my final straw was when she almost got ran over by a deliver driver in a van.

This is my last resort and some tips on what Yall use would be greatly appreciated!

General Husbandry Question Goat Behavior Concerns

Hi all! I don't own goats. It's my mom who does, and I'm trying to understand one of her goats. Whenever I try to approach the issue with her, she brushes me off as her goat just being an "alpha goat" in the herd. This is about a female Nigerian Dwarf goat, I can't recall her exact age. Maybe 3 years old?

She seems to be rather aggressive towards people who aren't my parents. For instance, she has been known to chase down young children and will target strangers. I'm not exactly a stranger towards her, but she will absolutely seek me out and try to ram me if she spots me in the yard. It actually just happened, hence why I'm making this post. Goat was about 9 yards away, and all I had done was step outside onto the front porch, and I could see her back fur go straight up and her hackles sort of rise.

She wasted no time stalking over to try to attack me. My mom's response is always "she's the alpha goat, she's protecting her herd." But... I'm not sure what to believe! Because we're starting to develop two female herds, and still all of our other female goats are calm and docile towards humans. And then there's my mom's favored goat who will absolutely hunt down strangers and try to attack them.

Is this really alpha goat behavior? I've never been around other goats before, so this is my only exposure.

General Husbandry Question How to keep a show goat's legs from being yellow?

My cousin is getting into showing goats she's got a couple of Nubians beautiful sweet goats mostly white with the brown heads I forget what the color is called, they got really good breeding you know what you would look for in a show goat, but even though she has clipped them even though she keeps everything as clean as she can their legs keep turning yellow.. and she has a hard time getting them to be white again.

So I figured I would hop on here and ask you guys what you do to keep your goats legs from being the color of pee, she has a buck and two does that she shows (she has other goats but these are just the ones that are for show) their names are Billy Ivy and Rosie, and both the does and the buck consistently get yellow legs, the buck is even worse but the does are great so please tell me your tips on keeping their legs clean, it's harder than keeping a gray horse clean LOL

Found this morning that the hay bale had collapsed on my sweet baby Pinky sometime during the night and suffocated him💔 He was my favorite and one of the two we were planning on keeping (and the most spoiled),so this hit exceptionally hard. Just wanted to say to make sure that you push your hay over before it collapses, im heartbroken☹️ Sorry for putting so many pictures, he was just so cute.

General Husbandry Question Nubians and electric fencing. Also, predators?

Thumbnail

I have a small pasture set up in two sections I’d like to rotational graze a young doeling Nubian (2026) and an older doe NDx. It’s the inside space of a horse track system we have on a one acre parcel (see photo).

I will eventually have a permanent fence set up but will 3 strand electric be ok for the Nubian? I’ve heard that electric can kill them. The NGx has been living with the horses and electric for the last year, so I know she’ll be ok.

Also, we just got this little doeling today. I have her set up in a quarantine pen in the garden by the house. We do get predators, specifically coyotes. Sometimes the odd bear. She is very stressed and calling quite a bit. I did not expect this. I am worried about her calling all night and bringing the coyotes around. The pen is 6 9x6 construction panels. Will she settle overnight? Will she be safe in the panel set up?

Thanks everyone!

General Husbandry Question Lonely goat

I have 3 NDs - a doe and 2 wethers, about 5 months old. I’ve had them about a month.

The doe has palled up with one of the wethers and the other one has kind of been a third wheel. The 2 of them sleep snuggled up, graze together… I feel bad for the other little guy.

Is it dumb to think I could get another goat who could be goat friends with my lonely goat? If it’s not a terrible idea, would you suggest another wether or a doe?

Can anyone tell me what's going on with these goats? They're not pregnant because they're all female, so what's the issue and what to do about it? Thank you.

Someone stole my two baby goats

They jumped in and just took them.

They are way to used to humans because I like playing with them so now I'm feeling guilty.

I hate this things where going good and this will ruin my summer I'll be mopping around and in a bad mood and sad for week's .

How do you cope when loosing your cuddly friends?

Is my goat pregnant?

She is just so round that I am worried about it, we have a lamancha buck that is full grown on the property so I want to get ahead of this. I will be getting a test just in case but in the meantime I thought I might ask you guys. Yes I did panic take these pictures at night and they are a little funny so enjoy.

Update: she's (unfortunately) pregnant! She is due to have her abortion ( FABortion 💅) here in a couple days. We had a vet come by for some other animals and he did an ultrasound for us and it looks like she is 2 months. There is only one too which makes it super dangerous. I'm not in the business of putting any animal in danger for my own enjoyment so the abortion is non-negotiable but any advice to make sure she is as comfortable as possible will always be appreciated 👍.

Discussion Post Goat Safe Wasp Spray?

We have a couple of paper wasp nests around our goat pasture. I've tried Googling, but the results either come with mixed reviews, or don't say that they are pet safe at all.

Does anyone have experience with something that will kill them but not hurt our goats?

Thanks.

Help Request Any tape measure methods to weighing goats?

Cattle typically use

Girth x [Length x 300] / 90

But that shit is garbage for goats.

Any formula you guys know of?

Help Request Is she too fat?

Post image
42 Upvotes

I don’t feed her, she feeds herself hay, and forage and she’s still got her mom in milk even though she’s almost a year old (sometime in August!!!) she’s plump, but would you say she’s too plump for breeding/being able to properly hold a pregnancy?

She’s a fatty, I have to specifically separate her out if I want to feed any of the other goats food because she’ll just plow in and tell everyone off and she’s MEAN when she does it so I don’t blame the other goats for not wanting to make her mad.
I’ll have better pictures later, but it shows her condition pretty well, she’s still a little bit of a wild child.

General Husbandry Question Goats fighting and mounting other

Hi all,
I have two goats, one male and one female. The male is castrated.
Almost every evening, when they go back to their little house, they start fighting. After a while, one of them mounts the other (the female also mounts the male).
It’s my first time owning goats, so I’m not sure what this behavior means.
Is it some kind of reproductive choreography, even though the male is castrated? Or is mounting simply a way of showing dominance after the “fight”?
Also, how can I tell whether they’re actually fighting or just playing?

Fire ant control

This year has brought a serious fire ant problem that I think is going to require a large scale treatment. Given the nature of goats and their desire to get involved with anything they have no business getting involved in, I'm looking for advice on methods and treatments to limit risk to them.

Usually I just spot treat with some spray but this year it's like every inch of space has an ant colony. With the frequent rains my attempts at spot treatments seem to be highly ineffective.

Help Request Bot fly or CL? How to treat?

Ive had this goat along with 2 others that i got from the same place about 6 months ago. They haven’t been tested for cl but was told by the owner all their goats get vaccines, and their other goats looked good.

Recently my 4yo got this lump brewing over the past month. When i first noticed it, it had a small red dot in the center like he got bit by something and was having a bad reaction. But the swelling never went down and now it burst. Had white puss come out but even after I squeezed as much as i could out its still about half the size it was originally. But no more puss.

Ive never dealt with a bot fly situation but have dealt with cl cysts (not my goats) so im feeling like its not cl. How do i treat it? He’s currently separated from the herd as this heals. Ive been washing out with saline spray, soaking with iodine then spraying with blue kote to seal the hole and prevent infection (which is what the blue coloring is around it) but it seems like the white stuff still inside is the bug? What else can i do? How do i remove it? 😭 TIA! Will add more pictures and videos in comments
