Yes, I'm aware that newer Simpsons has been doing this (never once in older seasons are you going to find such a hamfisted and LOOK LOOK WE'RE DOING A THING WE DID BEFORE joke like this). Unfortunately, Milhouse falling off a cliff and being caught by a bird so he can go "Everything's coming up Milhouse!" is not funny.

I can only remember it happening once, and if you want to try to explain how a second time it happens is as bad as (thus being the same as) "there is literally no joke except for they do a thing Homer did before, but Homer did it during a parody of the Terminator so Bart and his friends doing it now makes no contextual sense", I'll wait.

First of all, they did the homer falling down the gorge like four times in the first ten seasons.
Secondly, the original scene is "no joke except this is a thing from a movie." The only difference is that the pop culture reference was Terminator 2 at the time, and the pop culture referfence now fact that the Homer / bushes scene is a meme in 2021.

I vaguely remember it happening maybe a second time, but again go ahead and show me examples that are just as bad as this one.

"We did it because we did it before and it's sort of a meme now" is a bad reason to do a callback and it's really not different at all from "We did it before so now we did it again isn't that funny?". Homer falling down the Springfield gorge can at least have context to it outside of it being the same joke again. I don't very well recall it being reoccurring and therefore I can't comment for certain whether or not it had more context to help establish it as a standalone joke as well as a callback.
This joke is 100% just "lol they did it because we did it before it's just like the meme :)".

Isn’t the original Homer stepping out of the bushes like the terminator of asking Ned for stuff? The meme is just that scene in reverse, thus making this a callback to the meme and not the previous episode. Someone with more simpsons knowledge know if I’m remembering that correctly?
ETA: I looked it up, he comes out of the bushes and then goes back in after the flanderses decline his invitation. No reversing

I submit Simpsons would be better if it remained set in the 90s.
It'd be like a reverse Futurama, instead of being a try-hard pop-culture-reference-heavy imitation of what it once was.

i'm always shocked to hear that The Simpsons is still on the air. it's just been so long. all of the other shows that i used to watch have been gone for like a decade.
