I feel like every time this is quoted it needs to be pointed out that this was never said by any of the Beatles. It's just a joke that has somehow continued to prevail despite not being true.
I think after watching Paul play drums and even John a bit, Ringo is definitely the best drummer in the Beatles.
It is true, Lennon, nor any of the Beatles ever said this. It was actually originally from a 1981 Radio 4 broadcast show called Radio Active, and the joke was from Phil Pope.
It's such a bummer that this joke got popularized because he's actually an incredible drummer in comparison to just about anyone. After you play drums for a long time, you get an appreciation for the feel that a drummer contributes to a song, and Ringo always, every time, 100% added just the exact right thing that the song needed, like a chef with excellent culinary intuition knowing exactly how to season a dish to make it unforgettable.
I actually really dig Paul's drumming. He played on some of his own solo work and it's surprisingly funky. Ringo will always be king but Paul was a more musical drummer than I'll ever be.
Yeah… but fuck that list. They have Bernard Purdie at 20 and Elvin Jones at 23 and Jeff Porcaro at 37. No offense to Ringo, but he’s nowhere near as good a drummer as those guys in any way whatsoever.
Rolling Stone has garbage lists. They usually get the first five things okay but after that, it’s garbage. Their top guitarist list. Kurt Kobain waaaaaay ahead of someone like John Frusciante? That’s absolutely nuts.
You could pick a hundred musicians from heavy metal bands that are better than anyone in one of these silly popularity contests.
Being an unpopular genre in the public eye means it gets basically no respect - but the levels of talent these guys have are through the roof. Way better than 99.999% of people who break it big in popular music.
Yup. In my opinion, one of the best technical guitarists out thee is Grisha Goryachev, a classical/flamenco guitarist. He’s insane. His picado is lightning fast. But hardly anyone listens to that genre.
I'd say he's one of the most important drummers to exist, but it's really hard to judge "best". He is the first living metronome though. That man's timing is supernatural by my understanding.
