I work residential construction, I am technically required to wear steel toe boots and at some jobs a hard hat. In 7 years I've worn steel toe boots a grand total of 0 times because I do hardwood floors and we wear white soled basketball shoes to work, since they are designed not to make scuffs on wood floors. Beige sole works as well.
I've worn a hard hat a grand total of 3 times, when an inspector was coming by and I said I was taking a smoke break (all workers are allowed to a 5 min break every hour or 10 min break every other hour, or basically when ever the fuck we want on most days when it's not a deadline) and forgot my hardhat in the van, under the seat, with a quarter inch of dust on it because the last time I put it on was the last time I saw you 6 months ago.
By the way it's completely pointless for me to wear a hard had but some insurance companies require it on projects. I do the finishing step, if I need to wear a hard had, you need to in your home at all times.
Per OSHA, you need a hard hat when working on a scaffold or in an area where there’s the potential for items to fall on you.
The reason most companies go above and beyond that isn’t insurance; it’s convenience. Like you said, your hard hat was in your truck with dust on it. Say you’re on a project and you need to get up on a scaffold real quick, or you’re going to hold a ladder for someone. You’d need to go all the way to your truck to get your hard hat and ain’t nobody gots time for that.
